Stayed here for 2 nights as part of a stag weekend and can honestly say it was nothing but a good experience. I stayed in a room with 7 beds and the rooms were clean and supplied with a toilet and shower, the staff are helpful and have great English. The only negative things I would say are the rooms are very warm and also I would recommend bringing a towel as the ones supplied are not much bigger than a face cloth, other than this I would highly recommend this place for its location and value (€15 a night)

Stayed here with three ‘mature’ male friends in April this year.

We had travelled to Amsterdam from England on our Vespa/Lambretta scooters and were a bit worried about leaving them on the street outside the hostel, but the manger allowed us to wheel them through the reception area and park them in a private staff area at the back of the hostel for the four days, for which we were grateful.

The accommodation is exactly what you pay for…ours was two sets of bunk beds, with under bed storage and a single chair…that’s it. We had a refurbished en-suite shower, toilet and sink, which was clean and fit for purpose.
The room was basic, but perfectly clean and suited our requirements.

The premises itself was extremely busy with an eclectic mix of ages and nationalities. Breakfast is pretty much a ‘free for all’ but was perfectly acceptable. The bar/dining area is large, with a decent sized outside area.

Other than value for money and location, what makes this place is the staff. From the housekeeping to maintenance staff everyone seemed welcoming and courteous.
10/10 for the female manager that allowed us to park the scooters, she seemed to work 24 hours a day, and was always happy and welcoming…..’must be something in the water 😉’

Great place….would definitely go back, just not for a romantic weekend away..

10 of us stayed for 2 nights. We had two 6 bed dorms to ourselves with 3 x bunk beds in each. The beds were comfortable with a pillow and duvet included. The bathroom was small but perfectly acceptable for our needs.

There was quite a bit of noise at night with people coming and going but that was to be expected for a hostel. The slamming of the door to the rooms was rather annoying. Maybe look at getting a soft close door on the entrance to the rooms?

The bar was decent. We didn't have breakfast included so can't comment on that.

Check in was fine. A little bit of a queue but we did check in bang on 2pm when it opened so we expected a little wait.

The location is great with plenty of bars and sights in walking distance as well as easy access to nearby trams.

If you have realistic expectations of what a hostel offers then I would 100% recommended this place. If, like many other reviews, you're expecting a 5* hotel on your s**ty 1* budget then maybe look elsewhere.

Well, people are helpful here and flexible as well since they got a bar with huge space for many people. Rooms are descent, not perfect, but they are alright for travelers. If you occupy the whole room and you know who's in it, it's perfect. Location is right in the heart of Amsterdam, the staff is amazing, people are great, they like their environment, it is full of symbolisms and deeper meanings. There is a bar with extraordinaire prices comparing with the rest of the Amsterdam, i would suggest to raise them up a bit, they really are cheating themselves for people.. and it really is a great attraction point for everyone. Amazing place to spend your time in. I enjoyed every second of it, i might not gonna stay in the hostel again, but i will defiantly will come back to meet the employees, they are awesome and beautiful inside out, every and all the way.
With Love,
Andy A.

We visited here a while back and it was only when logging in to my old account I saw this on here, the hostel itself wasn’t actually too bad, it looks like a prison inside but it was clean and that’s all that mattered to us.

But, what I do think about often, is that the staff who broke down our door when I was in the shower because it obviously set some alarm off from the steam, so staff came charging in our room because I forgot to close the bathroom door, despite there being a sign. Luckily my boyfriend was sat on the bed, but we normally shower together, so you’re lucky he also wasn’t sat there naked. I just think that’s really strange and weird. It’s been a few years now and I think about this often.

After reading lots of mixed reviews I was a little apprehensive but ended up pleasantly surprised. We had a group of 12 (stag doo) in three 4 bed rooms with private bathrooms. Check in was easy and straightforward, credit to the girls at reception. The rooms were immaculate, not one bit of dirt even in the bathrooms. Our room had a electronic coded lock and the code was emailed to each guest that was staying in that room making it very secure. Bunk beds were surprisingly comfy, bedding was clean, a small bath towel was provided and was ample. Shower gel also available in the shower area.
Bar area again was very clean and tidy, nice atmosphere and cool to hang around in before heading out. Location was good, a slight walk nothing major, we found rickshaws were cheap and easy to get too and from the hostel. Checking out was a breeze. Couldn’t fault Hans Brinker. If you need a cheap place to stay that’s clean and friendly then it will fulfill your needs. 😊

Worst place in the world. I booked a room for 2 nights through hostelworld. When I arrived at the hostel and was checking in, they told me since I'm 37 they couldn't provide me with accomodation because they have a policy which doesn't allow guests older than 35 to stay at a dorm. They said they were fully booked and kicked me out. To make matters worse, they charged me with a cancellation fee equal to the 2 nights I had booked. They didn't reason with me, just kicked me out and left me with no room and stole 80 euros from me. If I make a booking through hostelworld, they have my birthdate and information, so they are literally stealing my money, if they have such a policy they should have not allowed the reservation to go through. What these people are doing is illegal and yet they refuse to answer any email or refund any money. Horrible experience, wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.

This hostel is poorly managed and I would recommend you keep searching the internet for a different place to stay in Amsterdam.

Here is a small snippet from our experience to try convince you to not book - The hostel staff cancelled our booking as we were running late (despite notification of our late arrival due a cancelled flight), the reception staff then made us rebook online upon arrival at 2-3am and pay additional booking fees & money for the room before giving us they keys despite them being at fault. Upon discussions with management in the following days, they are refusing to refund us the amount we paid above our initial booking despite them admitting it was a mistake on their end. Would rate our experience with this hostel a 2/10 if I’m generous.

They do you not want you in the dormitory if you are over 35. They tell you you will be asked to pay extra to stay in an individual room. So this isn't just agist, it is classist, with their assumption an older person can automatically afford to pay for the more expensive room.

This is a very good hostel were to stay during your trip in Amsterdam. It's located in a central area of the city, close to different public transportations stops. In front of the hostel you can rent bikes to go around the city. Receptionists are kind and polite. Nice common area. During night I slept well, of course the room it's small, but from an hostel I expect it. Anyway we were all friends in the room, so it was funny to be there for me. I recommend it. Also my friends that didn't have any precedent experiences with hostels, left the Hans Brinker Hostel satisfied.
