I've stayed at Van Gelder possibly 10/15 times over the past 15 years and I have say I love the place. The rooms are good, suits our group perfectly, beds are clean and most importantly very comfortable. Staff are great always a joy to deal with. Few snacks, beer etc sold at reception well priced. Van Gelder is perfect for...

200m from Central statoon. Run by a very friendly Dutch family. Good for groups, couples and those who want an inexpensive trip and using the hotel as a base to see the whole city. All day travel 7 euro with trams just oitside the door. The stairs as in all Dutch buildings area joyous challenge! Enjoy!!

I stayed here with two friends in two rooms at the Van Gelder. The stairs did scare us with how narrow and spiral they were, and with huge suitcases to carry and take down made it a work out. You have to return your keys each time you leave the hotel, but that came in extremely helpful after drinking Dam's...

Adequate for price. Good location saves it. Wifi in lobby but spotty in rooms. One small double bed for 2. Thinly worn towels with holes. Towel bars and bathroom mirror made for very tall people. No lift; long flight of stairs to enter; difficult with luggage.

Not clean enough, and with dozens of really small stairs to climb before you get to your room. It was the third time for me, and I realized I've grown up too much for that kind of hotel. The location is great, the breakfast is bad, and a big part of the place smells... Only if you are under 30,...

Stayed here last minute with my partner, rooms were very basic but clean. Staff were very friendly and helpful. You do have to leave your key for the room at reception but in a way it's one less thing to worry about losing when you are out and about. Good location near to everything and for the price you can't...

This small hotel is in the center of the city of Amsterdam very close to the Central Station and overlooking the canals. The twin room was very basic and spartan but on the whole comfortable. The steps (no elevator) were very steep and elderly people might find them tiring especially after a day walking around beautiful Amsterdam.

The greatest thing is that it is very near to centraal station. Lot of tourist attractions are 10 to 15 minutes walk from the hotel. The ground floor has a tour's and travel shop and one can get all the information and tickets. The breakfast has served by charging €5 but limited. The rooms are comfortable. There response through email...

I've been maybe five or six times to Amsterdam, and every time I pick this small hostel. It is not new nor glamourous, but it has a very good price (less than 70€/night including breakfast) and it's very well located, close to Amsterdam Centraal, and just in front of the red light district, within walking distance of all the major...

Great location just a few minutes walk from the train station and a couple of minutes walk from RLA of Amsterdam with lots of bars and restaurants on the doorstep. The hotel is basic but clean and the staff are great, we went bed only and got a full English breakfast from cafe next door which was great. A word...

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighbourhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
