I remember staying here nearly a decade ago as a penniless graduate and being satisfied with the experience. On returning, I thought something had gone terribly wrong with the hotel, but I think something may have gone terribly wrong with my memory. First impressions: we had to pay upfront with cash, and our room was not ready for an hour...

The hotel is in the city centre, a minute walk from the Amsterdam Centraal, canals, shopping and club streets (Damrak, Warmoestraat etc.). Prices are reasonable. It's clean, it's cheap and it has grea location. I spend 3 nights in a room on the 2nd floor, the view of Damrak was stunning. Get a room with breakfast, they're delicious (very British)....

I booked three nights here and checked out after the first night, my room was on the basement and next to a cleaners cupboard, so staff were constantly going up and down stairs giving no thought to anyone trying to sleep, I asked to change rooms but it was at an extra cost and because I didn't like the place...

Just returned from girls weekend aged 20 - 65 at this hotel. Great location only 5 minutes walk from Central train station, cafes, bars & eateries all around the hotel, very short walk to red light district. Rooms were very clean, had everything you'd need for a short break. We had rm 40, top floor overlooking canal, great view to...

I stayed with a group of 7 ladies aged 40/50/60s. Firstly the positives, The location is perfect for everything. The station is 2 mins walk, handy for dam square, river cruises and all attractions. Loads of bars, cafes and restaurants right outside the hotel. Also the staff were all extremely friendly and helpful and if it wasnt for the state...

Pictures online are completely different from reality, smelly disgusting. Toilet and shower are together without any separation, room is so tiny with two single beds, carpet smells of cigarette and the walls are very dirty. Honestly we felt we were in prison. My friend and I were very disappointed of everything. We would never go back there.

I have recently stayed here with a group of friends. There was some apprehension from the other girls with regards to previous reviews but i was more than happy to give it a go. the only good things were the view over the canal, we were right on it and the location (near dam square and RLD). room was outdated and grotty, the electrical socket had to be wedged with bags and shoes to keep it in place and our phones charging. bed was dirty and the room was cramped for two of us...

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighbourhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
