Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The staff were nice and courteous. It was quite nice that free coffee and hot chocolate was being served 24*7 at the lobby. Although we weren't a fan on the stay , we paid for 2of the 3bed rooms and were given a matchbox sized 2bed room and a three bedroom. Upon questioning this, we were told we can upgrade to a 4 bed at an extra 120 euros. This was super weird, as it's not our concern that the hotel was overbooked and the upgrade should have been from them. Eitherways, we were finally moved to a basement room after our requests to give us a 3 bed room which we paid for

My stay at Alexander Hotel in Amsterdam was nothing short of a disaster. The room was outdated with no hot water, and to top it off, there was a double booking error that led to me being charged twice for the same night. The receptionist, Dina, was beyond unhelpful and showed no empathy towards my situation. Despite my efforts to explain that the mistake may have been from Booking.com's end, she insisted on charging me for the extra room without offering any assistance. It took multiple calls to Booking.com throughout the night to finally resolve the issue and obtain a refund for the double booking charge. Overall, the lack of customer service and the inconvenience caused by the booking error made my stay at Alexander Hotel a complete nightmare. I strongly advise against staying here until they improve their service and address their booking system issues.

Response from Alexander Hotel , Guest Services / Front Office at Hotel Alexander
Responded yesterday
Dear Kamile Ö, We’re truly sorry your experience at Hotel Alexander wasn’t what you expected, and we apologize for any inconvenience you faced during your stay. About the hot water issue, it’s important for us to clarify that our hotel is equipped to provide continuous hot water to all our guests. Your experience is unusual, and we’re already looking into it to ensure everything is functioning perfectly. Regarding the booking situation, our investigation shows that there were indeed two separate bookings made by you for different room types. This wasn’t a mistake from our hotel or Booking.com. Dina, our receptionist, was following our standard procedures in handling your case. We understand that sometimes interactions can come off differently than intended, and we’re sorry if the service felt unsatisfactory. Despite the booking confusion not being on our end, we decided to refund the extra booking as a gesture of goodwill, hoping to resolve the issue amicably. We had hoped this would demonstrate our commitment to your satisfaction. We regret that we didn’t meet your expectations and appreciate you bringing these issues to our attention. We also recommend double-checking your bookings in the future to avoid similar mix-ups. We hope to have another chance to host you, offering the high standard of hospitality and service Hotel Alexander is known for. Best, Team Alexander

My two teens and I stayed at the Alexander for 3 nights. It is a very hard hotel to review because your experience could be totally different based on luck of room assignment at arrival. We reserved a triple room and I pictured the rooms on the website that were spacious with seating areas (in fact I did see these rooms as the doors were opened when they were being cleaned and they were similar to the website photos) When we arrived however the only triple available was an incredibly tiny dark room in the basement. I had known the basement was a possibility but again the basement room they show on the website is of normal size just with a lower ceiling. This was like a ships' cabin. We had checked in early so I went upstairs to ask if we waited till later in the day would a more normal size triple be available but it was not. The gentleman at the reception was so personable and really tried to help us. So we ended up paying a bit more per night and getting two small doubles (nothing else was available) across the hall from each other on an upper floor. The small double really is small though so if traveling as a couple I would reserve a twin or a double. There was really no place to put two suitcases for example and it was hard for my daughter and I to walk around the room at the same time. But for my son alone in the small double it was perfect. The location of the hotel was ideal for us and the common room/ lobby was very well decorated with large windows and plenty of spacious seating and had a machine for coffee and tea which was nice- we used that room a lot as there was no space in the rooms to sit and visit. There were others using the rooms for games or reading- it was a very nice and welcoming space. I would stay here again if it were possible to confirm exact room type before arrival.

Basic, uncomfortable beds, noisy at night with people smoking cigarettes & weed outside our bedroom window day and night! Our room was in the basement below the kitchen/reception, we were woken most nights at 3 or 4 am by people walking around and using the coffee machine (only good thing as it was free of charge).

We really enjoyed our stay. The hotel is close to the centre but on quiet street. It's also 10 minutes walk to the museums. The rooms are clean and the bed was comfy. Staff are lovely and very helpful. The decor is modern but you can also see the old parts of the building.

The room was the smallest I have ever stayed in. It was difficult to turn around in parts of it, I had to shuffle over to where there was room to turn around. Definitely not what was shown on the website.
