We stayed in a large attic room with a nice window overlooking a canal with view several blocks away of the Rijkmuseum and Van Gogh Museum. This spot is in a residential neighborhood, but right on the edge of tourist areas and close to the light rail system. The neighborhood is lively with a daily very-large flea market and lots of shops and restaurants within 1-8 blocks. The room had good natural light and a shared kitchen -- Irene provides breakfast materials (we cooked our own eggs). The bed could use a new mattress, and this is not a 5-star hotel. It is a long walk up the traditional narrow stairs. But I'd absolutely stay there again!

I spent hours researching somewhere central and affordable to stay in Amsterdam and eventually came across Between Art and Kitsch B&B. It was time well spent. Highly recommended already by both Lonely Planet and Time Out, it is located in the compact city's Museum Quarter. There is a canal outside and a view of the amazing Rijksmuseum. You are in easy walking distance of the city centre but will also benefit from exploring the immediate locale, which is packed full of restaurants representing a truly global cuisine and a range of small, individual shops. My youngest daughter and I stayed for five nights and could not have wished for better hosts. Irene and her partner went out of their way both before we arrived and once we'd got there to ensure that our stay was memorable and informative. As the name of this establishment suggests, they love their art: paintings, statues, antiques, curios and even exquisitely hand-painted doors. We stayed in a beamed, top-floor, en-suite, three-bed room, including dining table, with its own mini kitchenette (sink, kettle, fridge, hairdryer) that had shared access to a fully equipped kitchen just outside (another fridge, hob, oven, microwave, cutlery, crockery, stocked larder). The charming host Irene fills the kitchen with fresh fruit, cold meats, eggs, cereals, milk, butter, juice, a range of teas including herbal, a coffee machine and every sauce and condiment you can imagine. We ate out every night but it was a delight to be able to have breakfast at our leisure. Although the towels are changed every two days we never had anyone come in to our apartment when we in there – Irene, who lives on the floor below ensures a home-from-home but entirely private stay. It was also immaculately clean and fresh. Amsterdam, like most cities, is very expensive but Between Art and Kitsch will surprise you with its rates. They prefer longer bookings – i.e. not just for a weekend. This is not a place for stag parties or ravers but, if you want to experience the art and culture and utter joy of Amsterdam from a great value central location then look no further. I highly recommend this place to families, culture vultures or anyone who wants to experience a relaxing, traditional Amsterdam home with easy access to the beating heart of the city. One of the best holidays I've ever had. PS: Free wi-fi, large flat-screen TV and three steep flights of stairs, but there is a chair lift for the first two.

There are 58 steps leading to the rooms (two) so be prepared. The room itself was large and the bed was comfy. The location is awesome, a few minutes walk from the Museums (Rijks, Van Gogh, and others) and the Concertgebouw, in the up & coming De Pijp neighborhood. There are many excellent restaurants in the area. The hostess, Irene, is friendly and helpful with both practical matters and recommendations, and her dog is fun and playful. Everything one could need is close by, including coffeeshops and windows with red lights in them. Even the view from the window is great! As a bonus, the famous artist Mondriaan is said to have lived in the building at one point. Thank you, Irene, for sharing your home with us.

My friend and I spent four days in May in this wonderful B&B. The location is great, with The Museum Quarter just a short walk away. There is also a lovely market street nearby. And a wonderful restaurant, Oresti's Taverna, serving the most delicious Mediterranean dishes. The B&B host Irene is fantastic! Hospitable, nice, warm and friendly. She had great answers to all our touristy questions during our visit, and we felt extremely well taken care of in the pretty house near one of the canals. Our spacious and comfortable room, The baroque room, had the most exquisite quirky mix of furniture and decorations. We just loved it! Breakfast was absolutely splendid with an abundance of bread, cheese, ham, eggs, yoghurt, granola, fruits, coffee, tea, juice and much more. We would love to come back to this wonderful B&B. We couldn't think of a better place to stay in Amsterdam!

The room was cozy and clean, beds very comfortable, and Irene(the host) is very kind and sweet. The location is in a good neighborhood, quiet and central. Nice area to walk around in. There is a little self service kitchen that is only for the b&b guests, it is straight outside the rooms. (She had two rooms for rent when we were there). There is always something to eat, like bananas, cookies, tea/coffee, organic oatmeal, porridge, honey, muesli, cheese, bread etc. When in your room, one can hear if some other guests are using the kitchen or talking loud on the phone , but that happens very rarely and didn't bother us, we have stayed in hotels that where less sound prof then that. I can really recommend this place and I would definitely come back here again . Thank you Irene for being so welcoming, we had a wonderful time in your place and in Amsterdam. Ps.We were not bothered by any cigarette smoke as some earlier reviews wrote and we are both non smokers.
