The main attraction of this hotel is its close proximity to the Poas Volcano .This hotel looks amazing in all the glossy photos but in some respects not very practical; the highly polished wooden floors are slippery as are the glossy bathroom tiles with the bath mats laid out.We were drawn to the gorgeous big fireplace but the room was chilly when the fire went out. The biggest downside was the poor service. We were barely greeted on arrival, but I wasn’t too concerned about that, however dinner was a very poor experience. There were only 3 occupied tables and it took over an hour for my starter of a strawberry salad to arrive followed by a very dry piece of fish. The passion fruit dessert was good though.Breakfast was another disappointment.Table service and meagre portions, truly terrible pancake and bacon .The trails in the grounds were beautiful especially large banks of black eyed suzies which were stunning. The lodge emphasises the loan of wellies from its greenhouse for the muddy trails however I wouldn’t recommend these. My husband borrowed a pair and slipped and landed on his back .I believe this wouldn’t have happened if he had been wearing his own walking boots. This was our first hotel in Costa Rica so we didn’t really know what to expect.Thankfully our later experiences were much better.

A peaceful getaway in the countryside a few minutes away from Poas Volcano. Charming hotel with a definitive British touch, especially in the furniture. Charming amenities (game room with pool) reading by the fire with a view on the volcano. Charming trails on the property with boots available. The lack of tv and limited wifi allows for reconnecting and a longed for peace. There also is a room to watch old dvds. The hotel was nicely rebuild following a earthquake back in 2009. Service is good with nice restaurant for diner and breakfast. It would have been perfect - we felt amazing there - if our suite offered blinds that really covered the sun that sets at 5:30 offering for longer nights of restful sleep.

My husband and I booked an impulsive last minute stay here when we needed to overnight while in the San Jose area. We knew we didn't want to stay in San Jose and after a little searching this beautiful mountain area sounded right up our alley. We were so glad we chose this place! The lodge is really stunning and has Welsh influences as well as Frank Lloyd Wright influences in the design. A bit of modern meets old school and it really creates a cozy and welcoming environment. Our room had a fireplace and a private garden area that was so lovely (and it gets chilly at night in this region so we definitely enjoyed using the fireplace! Though there was a heater available for use as well). It was a really cozy and inviting space. The bed was extremely comfortable and the linens, too. My husband particularly loved the spacious bathroom with the incredible rain shower. We enjoyed dinner as well as breakfast in the dining room and both were outstanding. The steak was like butter! And it would be a shame to miss out on their homemade granola and jam. We arrived at night so we discovered the grounds are utterly beautiful on the morning of our stay. Definitely make time to hike one of the trails (they have maps in each room) and visit the pretty little greenhouse on the property. We were gasping over the beauty of the farmland where this hotel sits and hopeful that we'll return for another stay in the future. Truly a beautiful and comfortable stay.

My wife and I went to this hotel to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The overall place is nice, starting with the main hall. The room was also great with a excellent view of the Poas Volcano. The food at the restaurant surpass my expectations, tasty fresh and very good cooked. Also walking at the trails were a great plus.

Every detail is impeccable at this lovely lodge. Water, tea and coffee in each room, a fresh flower on our towels, lots of pillows and very comfortable rooms. The grounds are gorgeous with lovely hydrangeas and tropical plants in bloom. The views are amazing. The sitting areas in the main lodge remind me of Frank Lloyd Wright, with lots of natural light and elements. BUT…the FOOD and the STAFF are OUTSTANDING!!! Fresh fruit and the amazing local strawberries! Locally made yogurt that was fantastic, and I’m not a yogurt person. Outstanding soups, salads, beef, chicken and sea bass entrees. My favorite, surprisingly, was pasta bolognese! Homemade flan. JAVIER ran reception, was our bartender and head waiterAnd he is phenomenal! He was very attentive and made suggestions. Impeccable service! Javier is amazing!!

We stayed at the Poas Volcano Lodge for 1 night in February 2023 - 2 adults and 2 young kids. It is a beautiful property - loved the architecture and the setting on the hilltop farm. We had a 2 room suite in the other building across from the main lodge. It was small but charming. The main lodge building was stunning - lovely large wood timber frame construction - several cozy common sitting areas with fireplaces, great photo books and great views out from this mountain perch. Also had a game room downstairs with a pool table and many games and puzzles. The restaurant was fantastic! Great dinner - Pumpkin soup, carrot soup - incredible, a delicious beef dish, and a children's menu. excellent food. Also a delicious farmhouse breakfast included with the stay - homemade granola, homemade strawberry jam (from the farm), eggs, pancakes, hot chocolate -very filling start to the day! This is a lovely place to stay if you are visiting Poas Volcano and/or La Paz Waterfall Gardens -- both very near by.

Beautiful lodge. The Hummingbird room was in the main building. It was large, had a huge bed and a single bed, ensuite and balcony with amazing views. The food was great - probably one of the best steaks I have had. The wine list is good and covers different price ranges. Breakfast was lovely with options for fruit, cereal etc followed by choice of omelette, pancakes and toast. Orange juice and coffee or tea available. We walked the trails at the lodge there are blue, yellow and red trails . We did the red and yellow, you need walking shoes and it is hilly but worth it. You do need to be relatively fit to do the trails. The lodge does not do lunches but prepared a sandwich for us as the weather was bad and did not have a car to drive to a local cafe.

This small “boutique” has plenty of glamour. All small details are well taking care of. Friendly and very professional. Very good restaurant with a lot of charme. This hotel makes a good stop on the way to the Poas Volcano. Easy to reach though away from touristic spots.

This was the 2nd trip to the lodge and will return again! The rooms, staff, food and service are 4 reasons why, but it's the location and uniqueness of the lodge and it's location that keep wanting me to return. For those who really want to embrace a natural setting that isn't crowded and enjoy the beauty of the region, the Poas Volcano lodge should be on your list.

The Poas Volcano Lodge was a great experience! We used this as a place to stay for one night after arriving at San Jose Airport. The road leading up to the lodge often had cows walking up and down it giving you a country feel. There was also a beautiful view from our room. The room was very clean and reasonably modern. The shower water pressure left a little to be desired but we have found this common in Costa Rica. There was a nice relaxing garden out back with lawn chairs and a nice view. We were pleased with this hotel and would recommend if you are the adventurous type who would like a location which is close to the Poas Volcano. It was a nice quiet place to stay.
