Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We have spent 1 night on the 2nd of Sep in the Merceny Motel. Warm welcome received at arrival. The rooms are modern, new and perfectly isolated (you do not hear any noise from outside 👍, despite the noisy street) Very confortable beds. Good ratio quality /price ! 😊

Don’t let the location put you off. Yes, it‘s above a petrol station, but it’s modern, clean, spacious and comfortable with parking, a good breakfast buffet and an easy walk to restaurants in the town. Think of it as a hotel with its own petrol station rather than the other way round.

We were so happy with our stay, very reasonable rates and a first rate breakfast that does not cost an arm and a leg. The receptionist was very welcoming and even offered to carry our bags. The motel is within walking distance of the down town and many good eating establishments. Make sure that wherever you dine takes credit cards in case you have no EUROS on you.

Excellent facility, very friendly and massively helpful staff throughout the stay. The staff were positive and kind they seem to be motivated too. They are an asset to the hotel management. Bicycle storage was possible in a locked garage/storage facility. The whole building is super modern look with polished concrete the beds are comfortable and there is a shop and a small cafe restaurant too. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. We will stay here again and it’s on my wish list as well as informing others who may wince at a petrol station hotel, but it’s absolutely a go to hotel in the town of Bastogne.

We stayed two nights at the Motel at the start of our Belgium trip. Was not too sure what to expect but we were favourably impressed. Bit of a language barrier at Reception but we got by with my pigeon French. Rooms were a bit on the small size and l am not a lover of the natural grey polished concrete but it was acceptable as it is a motel not a hotel. Breakfast was adequate and there is a small supermarket too that sells most things. It is only a 10 minute walk to town as well.

Mand thanks to the previous TripAdvisor posts based on which we chose the location to base our party of four for two nightsThe motel is in a great location just a 5 minute stroll to the main square. Free parking and the garage was great for filling up before the next step of our journey to Munich. All the staff were welcoming and friendly and the breakfast was fine and good value (continental). The rooms are modern and very quiet and had a wonderful walk in shower. We highly recommend this motel as a place to stay. As the saying goes, don't judge a book by its cover.

Like many of the other reviewers, we weren't quite sure how it was going to work having the hotel attached to a gas station and convenience store. However, having been reassured by previous guests, we plunged in and were happy we did. All of the staff were gracious and friendly. The rooms were clean, well appointed, and very affordable. Breakfast was typical European fare, but it was fresh, tasty, and plenty of it. And it turns out that convenience store was a handy option for gas & food on our road trip. The location is within walking distance to the square and main drag in town. We simply can't speak highly enough of our experience. As Americans who have lived and traveled abroad extensively, it's rare you find such an affordable and friendly accommodation. Try them - you'll be glad you did!

We only stayed for one night while in the Bastogne region. I was a little concerned when we arrived and I saw it was connected to a small store. But the staff was extremely welcoming. Was happy to deal with my almost non-existent French and needed asked for an English speaking staff member to come and assist. The room was large. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was very well equipped with a large vanity, good lightly and an excellent shower. We heard no noise from any room or exterior. We did use the AC a bit which worked well. We were provided information on Wifi and it worked well. The attached store has a nice selection of coffees and pastries too. The location is a bit further from the main town area but was easily walkable to restaurants via a very safe street. I ended up leaving an item and when I realized it a couple of days later, we happened to be driving back through Bastogne and stopped in and they had the item stored and returned it to me. Again, even dealing with my use of English and getting another woman working in the store to come and help with the translation.

My wife and I travel extensively worldwide and have lived abroad in Europe. This hotel experience was notable for the subtle, yet obvious rudeness and incompetent service (intentional or not) to anyone who has traveled or lived in a foreign country. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone, particularly Americans. The young lady running checkin (long blonde hair) had confirmed two adjacent rooms in the reservation - having worked in the hotel business - my wife knew this is not always possible to accommodate, thus the request and positive confirmation. Upon checkin, the lady at the desk pretended not to speak English. My wife asked in German if she spoke German and she shook her head “no”. After a long pause, the checkin lady became suddenly fluent in English. (Sorry we only speak German and Spanish in addition to English) So we were assigned the furthest rooms from each other (note each room is max 2 people, with no connecting rooms). Parking was, in fact, free - just park in gas station parking lot. The gas station and convenience store was also handy. Rooms themselves were fine and as expected (think Holiday Inn). No WiFi info provided at checkin though heavily advertised as available and free...so much for free WiFi, we had to use our own data plan from a local SIM card. Every other hotel on the planet with free WiFi gives you the key at checkin or posts in the room - the name of the WiFi was not obvious - I think it is the one that is Q8?!? Breakfast included and fine. Only one table (made up for 2 people - we had 4 and lots of open tables) made up with silverware, plates, etc. The same lady who checked us in was in the hotel office with a young man (short dark hair) - I asked politely for help (or at least tell me where to get my own plates - I don’t mind). He grudgingly got up and helped. I clearly asked for the still water in English and German “was it the red or blue cap?”. We assumed blue which is typical but he told us red (wrong) in front of the lady who must’ve forgot English overnight. Long story short, for a city that obviously lives for tourism, their open disdain and indifference to foreigners was shameful. I would not stay here again or recommend to anyone. Response from Mario S, Owner at Le Merceny Motel
Responded 19 Jan 2020
Dear CL, Thank you for your review. We are sad and surprised to read about your stay. We started operating this motel about 10 years ago. As you can see from the many reviews, the staff has worked hard to provide a great service throughout the years. From your comments, I understand your experience was not up to your expectations. Even though I have full confidence in my team and prior to getting their version, I would like to apologize. Having had many US travelers in December as well as over the years, I can ensure you that everyone is very welcome at our motel and we also try to go the famous extra mile to make the stay as good as possible. I will review all your points in detail with the staff. Idea is to continously try to get better. Would it be possible to contact you once I've reviewed this case? Best regards, Mario Schmit / Owner
