Nestled in a picturesque setting, the Budock Vean Hotel is lauded for its spotless rooms and well-kept grounds. Many guests admire the attentive staff and the relaxing atmosphere, although a few areas could benefit from a refresh to enhance the ambiance. This was a special family treat organised by our daughter to celebrate my wife's birthday. It was a lovely surprise and proved to a wonderful experience for us all.
Our comfortable signature room overlooked the golf coarse and gardens, splendid view.
It took the first day to acquaint ourselves with the system of operation, social distancing, remembering when and where to wear face masks etc. The hotel obviously takes clients well being to heart, good to see.
We were lucky enough to enjoy the pool and spa for an hour which was booked well in advance of our stay. The pool/spa area is given a 15 minute clean between each 6 person group which shortens your time but is necessary given present circumstances. The hotel has a relaxed feel about it, quiet, comfortable lounge areas where it is easy to get into conversation with other guests. The staff we found to be friendly, attentive and efficient. The meals were delicious, be it breakfast or diner, we enjoyed them all. Our only sorrow is that we didn't stay longer, another night or two would have been perfect.

We stayed here for 1 night at the beginning of our break to Cornwall, having stayed here previously. Communication beforehand was excellent and informative, given the restrictions in place due to Covid.

Yes things were different, but the hotel and staff were no less warm or welcoming. Check in/out was via an app, and our room key was in our room with everything clean and sanitised.

Ok so it is weird walking round the hotel with masks on but once seated you can remove. We sat outside for afternoon drinks, there seemed to be only one gentleman managing bar - pouring drinks and serving, so service was a little slow.

Dinner was delicious, 4 courses, well presented. Again Covid has changed things a little here, and that you have to take the plates yourself from the trolley and place back again when finished your course. However, a tea towel on the table allows for you to handle the hot plates!

Our bedroom was spacious and light, overlooking the gardens & golf course. Great shower with toiletries provided.

Really loved it here from the comfortable bed, and good food right down to the lovely walk down to the waters edge. The hotel is in the country but easy to find. It does have a golf course and a spa but we didn't use either.

We have stayed in half a dozen hotels since Covid but no doubt that in this front, Budock Vean was the best. Staff wear gloves and a mask, same table for every meal, staff don't touch your food or drinks

Menu is a la carte only but plenty of choice and changes daily

Highly highly recommended

We stayed in a renovated signature room for 3 nights in June and the cost of the stay with 3 course evening meal was 372 per night.
The best bits:
Location is superb on the banks of the Helford Estuary. So you can hire a boat, kayak, relax in the grounds or on a beach without getting in the car.
The signature room was spacious and light.
The staff were great.
Food was very great.
Now for the room for improvement
No fridges in rooms. Therefore only UHT milk for tea. Bottled water left in the room was lukewarm urgh. In these days one expects fresh milk and cold water to be available.
The shower area of the bath had a curtain rather than screen.
The hotel caters for the silver pound and younger couples nay find it a bit staid.
The communal areas I.e. halls etc do need decorating and updating.
We feel that with the hotel updates needed the hotel is expensive for what the facilities proved.
However you cannot beat the location.

Thanks for taking the time to review your stay Julie, it was nice to welcome you and your husband back again after your visit to us last October. There is no requirement at 4* level to provide a fridge in the bedrooms, but we do have some on request, and we gladly provided one for you along with a jug of milk. All our communal areas have been updated and decorated, except the upstairs bedroom corridors, as we wanted to finish the room refurbs first and the corridors are scheduled for a freshen up once the bedrooms are all done.

Returned home today after a one night stay at the Budock Vean. Two girlfriends and I wanted a night away locally (we all live in West Cornwall) and chose the Budock Vean. Following a great day at nearby Trebah gardens we checked in to the Hotel. ALL the staff during our stay from Reception check in/out, bar/waiting staff and room change over staff were friendly, polite and so efficient. We were also very impressed with the Covid precautions, sanitiser is everywhere and spare masks/gloves available in rooms. Food was good, cocktails delightful! Don't hesitate to book this Hotel, we will be back. Thank you

We visited this stunning hotel in March, having not been to this part of Cornwall previously. We stayed in the 'Old Nineteenth" cottage. This cottage is graded 4* gold award by Visit England and is the largest cottage, with four double/twin bedrooms, comfortably sleeping eight people, which was perfect because we were having an extended family stay, which was a multi-generation group, so with a swimming pool, spa, sauna, hot tub, tennis, golf and a full sized snooker table on site, there was going to be plenty of activities to keep us entertained.

The facilities at ‘The Old 19th’ cottage were plentiful, with parking for four cars, an enclosed garden (which was really handy for the two dogs), most bedrooms were en-suite, free Wi-Fi, flat screen tv in the lounge and every bedroom too, all bedding, towels and tea towels, bath robes and swimming towels, hairdryer and ironing board. The large kitchen, which has a separate utility room, was also well stocked including dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer. The hotel also arranged a lovely welcome pack, containing biscuits, sweets and lotions in a travel bag.

Service was exceptional, the food in the restaurant was fine dining at its best, with a delicious menu in the light and airy restaurant. On one of the evenings there was gentle live music to add a nice ambience in the background.

We had the swimming pool to ourselves in the evening because it stays open until late and then we sat in the hot tub looking at the stars...breathtaking. Likewise, every evening we had several frames of snooker. Whilst staying at the hotel we experienced the spa facilities, with a wonderful massage, whilst our daughter opted for the manicure treatment. The golf course is also open to guests at the hotel and the cottages.

Take a slow wander down through the landscaped gardens to the river. Take the path adjacent to the golf course and you will descend down to the quaint beach on the shoreline. From there a short walk takes you to the Ferry Boat Inn at Helford Passage, where we ate out twice, sitting outside overlooking the sea. Another great eating place is the Shipwrights Arms across the river at Helford.

The hotel is in the perfect location to explore the Lizard Peninsular. Some great places to visit are Helford, Durgan, Coverack, Lizard Point, Cadgwith, Kynance Cove, Praa Sands and St Michael's Mount. All of these places are within about a 45 minutes car drive. Some of the windy roads are spectacular with little villages and coves on the way.

We found all of the staff very friendly and helpful and would love to return here again soon.

We had 1 night at Budock Vean as pre Xmas treat unable to say anything bad about our stay. The room was warm luxurious top class bathroom large fluffy towels and bathrobes with slippers. Great swimming pool with outside hot tub which was immaculately clean . The staff are really on top form with sanitising after each visit always felt safe. Our first time to Helford area as keen to visit some of the great gardens.
We needed a dog friendly hotel which were very limited last minute and for less than a week stay.
when I phoned directly to check availability Judy on reception was extremely helpful with her knowledge of great local walks and places to stop for a drink.
On arrival right throughout our stay all the staff in every area were friendly and helpful
We stayed in a standard room which was roomy very clean and comfortable also very quiet .
Bath robes, beach towels and Elemis toiletries provided.
Loved there was a hotel residents tumble dryer great after a wet walk
Breakfasts excellent and we ate on 2 nights in the dining room and conservatory.
Menu choices in both areas good and always served with a smile .
The hotel gardens leading down to their private beach with facilities to kayak paddle boarding or just have a drink and enjoy the views was a bit special
Hotel is in a lovely location to go exploring
We enjoyed our stay so much we have booked to return next year and plan to stay longer

We visited at the end of September and had the benefit of some superb autumn weather. As ever the food from breakfast to dinner was excellent with plenty of choice of locally sourced fish and meat. The young waiters and waitresses were great even offering to ask the chef to prepare a special starter one evening. The fact that one has to dress for dinner makes dining that little bit special.

One minor point, whilst I accept the need for the avoidance of cross contamination, other hotels at which we have stayed have managed to undertake a mini service such as making the bed. This as I say is a minor point of which we were fully aware and would not put me off visiting the hotel as soon as we are able.

We have been coming to Budock Vean for many years, and the high standards have been maintained, and indeed increased in terms of Covid-19 precautions. It is a family owned hotel, with many long-serving staff assisted by younger students and other more temporary members of the team. The service from everyone is helpful and welcoming. There are special rates if you book an evening meal with the bed and breakfast room rate, and the food is absolutely delicious. I rarely eat fish at home, but almost always choose it at Budock Vean, not because there’s nothing else I fancy, but because the fish is so excellent. A huge plus for us is that the food is hot and served on hot plates, which is not always the case, even in the best restaurants. The breakfasts are also outstanding, with much to choose from.
We like to holiday with our dog, and the hotel allows dogs in certain rooms. There are wonderful grounds for dog walks and there is a path walk illuminated at night for a late night dog walk. There is an ongoing programme of refurbishment and so one of the rooms are a tad jaded but the refurbished rooms are top notch, and the rooms awaiting refurbishment are more than adequate, as the beds, linens and food are what matters - not that the curtains or carpet are somewhat dated. It is well worthwhile booking directly with the hotel, and enquiring about their special deals for future stays. We hope to be going for many years to come.
It is hard to answer some of the questions below because the answers aren’t straightforward. The hotel doesn’t insist that guests wear masks but asks those who can to kindly wear them inside the hotel. I’m also not sure about the laundry facilities. They certainly do laundry in ‘normal times’ but I didn’t enquire this trip. In terms of the cost. If you book and pay in advance for your next holiday there is a 20% reduction which makes the cost fall into a middle bracket. It also depends what class of room you book. Also golf, swimming etc are free to guests and so the hotel is suitable for families as well as couples or singles who like an immaculately presented dining room with guests who are encouraged to dress smartly.

Helford Passage Beach (sandy, low tide only) and Grebe Beach at Durgan (pebbles, low tide only) are our nearest. Maenporth, Swanpool and Gyllyngvase are sandy beaches and have cafes, toilets and facilities to hire equipment for water based activities.

What is the dress code for ladies for dinner?
Answer from Janet G
5 contributions5 helpful votes
They do ask that you dress smart/smart casual, i.e. not jeans or shorts but something like linen trousers would be fine. On the two occasions that we ate in the restaurant I wore a long summer dress. As far as I could tell most people respected the code. Hope that helps.
Answer from Martin B
Mawnan Smith, United Kingdom14 contributions2 helpful votes
Hi, Grebe Beach, also known as Durgan Beach, is about a mile from the hotel along the coast path. There is a sandy beach at low tide outside the Ferryboat Inn at Helford Passage plus there is lovely beach at the bottom of Trebah Garden which is perfect for adults and children alike. The hotel has private foreshore access to the Helford River but it's tidal and not sandy. Mark H's answer above is also correct that Maenporth Beach is 3 miles away and the beaches in Falmouth such as Swanpool, Gyllyngvase and Castle Beach are all about 20 minutes by car. We hope you are able to come and stay with us.
