The good points: The location is great - right in the middle of the old town! It was really lovely to leave the apartment every morning and wander through the lanes and streets which were full of local people. The manager/owner of the apartments is very friendly and it was a pleasure dealing with her. The bad points: Unfortunately we...

Just back from a 7 night stay at Apartment 6 and cannot recommend these apartments highly enough. Firstly, Mariza was so friendly and accommodating. She was happy to accomodate an early arrival and upon arriving provided a detailed map of Alfama (more detailed than any map in the guide books we had purchased), explaining where local transport connections were and...

Stayed here with hubby last Dec and we had a wonderful time here! Great, attentive service from Mariza, who gave us directions to the place via email. It was still a little tricky trying to locate the place from the Santa Apolonia train station. Go by the roads with the cars if you're going by night - it's safer and...

Highly recommended. This is a gem of a place to stay in Lisbon in the oldest part of the city, the lovely Alfama. We came across this place last minute when searching for a reasonably priced accommodation option for a spontaneous trip to Lisbon, with most of the mid range hotels being either booked or prices in all the other...

The apartment was really clean and nicely decorated. The location was ideal to explore the windy streets of Alfama. Mariza the owner was really friendly and helpful and gave us a great welcome. We would definitely come back and recommend this place to people visiting Lisbon.

Páteo Santo Estevão-Self Catering Apartments is situated at Alfama the old area of Lisbon which survived the earthquake of 1755. Apartments are situated at the very convenient place. It takes from five up to ten minutes to get the Fado Museum, Roman Theater Museums, Cathedral SE, Museum of Decorative Arts, Military Museum, Saint George Fortress, two miradores and Santa Apolonia...

This was a great find in the heart of Alfama, right next to Santo Estevao church. Owner Mariza was very helpful and speaks good English, Portuguese, French and a bit of German too. She grew up in Switzerland, which comes over in her organisational flair. We took a chance on a place with only a couple of reviews, due to...

Take a map of the location so you can find it easily. Loved this place! It was cute and cozy. Steep stairs into the place. Super friendly owner helped us with all our travel needs. Little kitchen was adequately supplied with utensils. Location was close to a fabulous fado bar and some good restaurants. Close to Tram 28, the bus,...

Staying in Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria

Neighbourhood Profile
Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria
Explore narrow streets and alleyways, small cafes and, of course, the internationally acclaimed Fado music. The earth-shattering Great Earthquake of 1755 destroyed most of the city but the contiguous neighborhoods of Mouraria, Castelo and Alfama remained standing to this day. These neighborhoods represent Lisbon at its historical best. The cool breeze of the Tagus river will take you up the hills to the sound of Fado, where you'll discover the best "tascas," eat delicious fresh fish and drink great wines. Discover hidden viewpoints and ancient traces of other civilizational ruins in the heart of the Portuguese capital. These are centuries-old neighborhoods that will welcome you to the very best of old Lisbon culture.

“There is a room with a great view, we did not get it, but if you can get it, it is worth the $$.”
LynnMSP, 22 Oct 2014 | Read review
“If you're a little older, then request that you do not get apartment 2 - here, there is an awkward wooden ladder that leads up to the bedroom and the ceiling in the bedroom is so low that one can't stand straight..... it's OK, if you're young and/or flexible - but if you're not, then ask for a different apartment :)”
AnonimoTwingo, 29 Oct 2012 | Read review
“when we return to Lisbon, we will certainly stay at the room with the Alfama/Baixa view or the one with the river view.”

“Not all apartments have a view overlooking the river Tagus. Ours didn't, but was still amazing. Check first if this is a priority for you.”
