Located downtown Lisbon, in Chiado, Casa Balthazar is part of the city’s history.Balthazar, the founder of the famous Confeitaria Nacional (the oldest pastry in Lisbon), acquired this beautiful property in August 1882. The house, with wonderful views to the castle and Rossio, still belongs to the family. The old factory, where all the cookies were produced to Confeitaria Nacional, including the famous “pastel de nata” and many other old recipies, became a restaurant. The family atmosphere can be felt in the living rooms and rooms which provides comfort and a unique experience.Come learn more about Lisbon and you’ll have a surprise.

My partner and I stayed for four nights in October. The hotel's location is excellent. Close to useful public transport options as well as excellent bars and hotels. Despite the proximity to these, once inside all was an oasis of calm and peace. We had the Duplex Terrace which is located just inside the main entrance and so feels like you're in a private home. There are lots of stairs to this accommodation, not much of an inconvenience but could be a challenge to people with lots of luggage, etc. The first floor comprised the living / kitchen / dining area. This was simply furnished and very comfortable. The Nespresso coffee machine was well used! The fridge contained a few (chargabel) drinks options but left lots of space for any items we wanted to store. There were plenty of plates, utensils, cutlery, etc for anyone wanting to do more than make a few drinks. The second floor housed the bedroom and bathroom. There was plenty of hanging storage for our clothes and lots of drawers and a dressing table (so nice to have a proper dressing table with good, natural light!). The bathroom was well appointed, and the shower controls were simple to use with good water pressure and temperature. The very top had the roof terrace that overlooked the city towards the castle. It had a small table and chairs as well as larger sun loungers. This was a lovely spot to sit out of an afternoon with a glass of wine or a beer and watch the sun go down. It does get a bit windy/chilly up there but nothing a light cardigan didn't deal with. The breakfast was the highlight of our stay! It is served on a tray to the room at a time of your choosing. It contained fresh baked goods - croissant, rolls, patries from the affiliated bakery and small biscuits - ham, cheese, two types of jam, butter and a large platter of fresh fruit. Most days we couldn't eat it all so would save bits to have of an afternoon when we returned to freshen up before dinner. We have recommended this hotel to friends and have no hesitation in coming back next time we are in Lisbon.

We were in the Panoramic Room with an incredible view of Lisbon and it’s castle. Staff were highly attentive, room was very clean, breakfast was delicious and the pool quiet and warm! Also in a great location. Will most definitely return.

In January, we booked a 4-night stay (end of May to beginning of June) and transferred the required 50% deposit. Their cancellation policy was full refund up to 72 hours before check-in time. On March 18 we cancelled our reservation because of the pandemic. We received acknowledgement of our cancellation and assurance that the full refund would be sent. Our follow-up requests were sent weekly. Each time we were told the refund was being processed and we would receive it in a few days. Our final request on April 17 was ignored. It is now April 24 and we have given up hope of any refund. This hotel is not trustworthy.

Casa Balthazar was incredible, a lovely retreat in the heart of busy and hilly Lisbon. It really would be great for a honeymoon, but I went with my best friend and we LOVED it still! We stayed in Terrace Castle 2 and it was lovely. Beautiful city/castle views, and the balcony seating and hot tub is just incredible. The hotel staff is so accommodating and happy to help all the time. The breakfast is DELICIOUS and we looked forward to it every day. I highly recommend staying here!
