Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Our family of four adults stayed two nights here, wish it had been longer. From the drive in with all the one-way streets it seemed way out of town at first, but walking to the town center was an easy two minutes. It was so quiet and peaceful, with a beautiful view and gardens. Carole has created a lovely, warrm little apartment, with a well-equipped kitchen and a big bathroom. The fold-out couch was perfectly comfortable, and we enjoyed the warm waters of the swimming pool. Highly recommend!

My husband & I love to visit Portugal & one of our favorite towns is Sintra. We had last been in Sintra 8 years ago & had stayed at Cinco. Needless to say we were looking forward to staying there again. The location couldn’t be better, a few blocks from the center & parking out front. Carole & Stuart, the owners, have a wonderful apartment on the ground floor of their home. There are beautiful gardens & a wonderful view toward the water. You couldn’t ask for better hosts, Carole supplies items for breakfast, which makes it very convenient. When we visit again we will always stay here. I would advise anyone booking to use their website Stayatcinco.com. Chris & Irv

I think "B&B" is a wholly inappropriate term to categorise Cinco and I struggle to find a single word that can do it justice and so I'll just write what comes to mind and you can make your own mind up... We stayed in the "apartment" which is actually the ground floor of the house comprising of a bedroom, living room, well-equipped kitchen with large dining table, and a spacious bathroom. In addition we had exclusive use of the terrace (with BBQ) with stunning views of a tree-filled valley and countryside with the occasional glimpse of the sea on the horizon. There is also a "sun room" that offers a quiet and comfortable retreat to read a book or just gaze into the garden. The ambience is defined by the beautifully kept gardens (you can help yourself to fruit from the trees and veg from the allotment) and the traditional Portugeuse architecture of Cinco and the neighbouring buildings that occassionally pop-out of the tree canopy of the valley. It is easy to spend the entire visit sitting on the terrace sipping G&T's or Port and tonic unwinding and soaking up the idyll, yet for all this Cinco is just a couple of minutes walk away from the very centre of Sintra and its bars and restaurants - and just to take the stress out of deciding where to go Carole or Stuart are always happy to suggest a good place to eat or a bar to visit. But staying at Cinco always leaves me perplexed as there is one question I have never been able to answer... Why do people stay in expensive hotels when they can stay at Cinco ?

We couldn’t have been happier with our choice of Stuart’s Cottage at Cinco B&B. From the moment you walk through the arch and see the breathtaking views you know you’ve found a hidden gem. This life-sized doll house has every modern convenience yet retains its old world charm. Take the time to admire Carole’s attention to detail and artistic talents; the beautiful scripted words under the sky light, the fact the wastebasket and tissue box perfectly match the wallpaper in the loft bedroom, the fresh fruit and flowers adorning the REAL “picture window” and a gorgeous chandelier in a quaint cottage. Quality linens throughout, a genuine “bread bag” hanging in the kitchen and a luxurious bathroom with REAL bedrock in the corner of the magnificent marble shower. Stuart explained that the shower was actually built around the original bedrock – what a unique feature. All the necessary ingredients are provided to ensure you can prepare a nice breakfast sitting at the window overlooking the gorgeous garden, including grapefruit fresh from their tree. Carole and Stuart were excellent hosts and pride in their property is evident everywhere you look. Our stay here was definitely the highlight of our trip. What an amazing memory for our 50th wedding anniversary!

We were warmly welcomed to delightful Cinco and enjoyed the peaceful, clean, well equipped apartment with garden access and patio with lovely view. Carole and Stuart couldn't do enough to make us comfortable and were full of information on Sintra and the surrounding areas. Absolutely charming ...

The old Gardeners Cottage in Cinco B&B is the most perfect home away from home we have ever visited. The tiny, secluded private garden is absolutely enchanting and the Cottage itself is just magical; it has everything one needs but provides all comforts with such impeccable taste and charm it feels like you were living inside the most luxurious travel magazine. The owners of the B&B, Carole and Stuart, are most charming, helpful and discreet hosts you could imagine. They were always available for whatever we needed, but we have no idea how they replenished the breakfast goods or tidied up in the Cottage and made the bed since we never ever saw them do it. We suspect they had help from the fairies in the garden - and there surely were fairies there, as the Cottage and the garden were clearly stolen from a fairy tale! The location was also perfect. The B&B is situated in the centre of Sintra, right in the middle of all the main attractions but cosily tucked away between a quiet little side road and the open view over the valley, so that when you want some peace and quiet you are perfectly hidden from the world.

Stuart and Carole run this beautiful B&B, just a few minutes from the heart of downtown Sintra. The B&B is peaceful and quiet, supremely clean and the hosts are very welcoming. We stayed in the apartment (attached to the house) and also shared Stuart and Carole's lovely garden for a relax with a glass of wine or two in the evenings before heading out for dinner... Breakfast is provided in the apartment (bread, eggs, cereals, milk etc.) so you can make whatever breakfast you desire when you are up and about... we loved this approach and wish more hosts would do this (great idea Carole!) :-) We absolutely loved it here and would place it at the top of our list of "excellent finds for places to stay on our travels"... if you are in Sintra, don't hesitate to make a booking here and stay - you will not regret it... :-)

What an amazing discovery my husband Peter made when he found this gem! We stayed for four nights in mid-September. Not only are you getting clean, spacious, and comfortable accommodations, you are also getting use of the gardens (including a ping pong table!), and the pool (very refreshing after a long day of sight seeing). As other travellers mentioned, the location is close to the busy town of Sintra, yet far enough away that you don't hear any of the noise. The kitchen is well equipped, and fresh bread, eggs, and jam were provided by Carole. One evening as well we came back and discovered some fresh figs for us, which we enjoyed with our Port that we had brought down from Douro. The bedroom is clean and comfortable, and off of the bedroom there is a large and bright sitting room with access to the outside brick patio overlooking the valley, perfect for morning coffee or late night drink. The driving directions provided by Carole to get here were spot on, and we had no trouble finding the location. Carole was there to help with parking, which is sometimes an issue in Portugal. As well, Carole went through recommendations for local restaurants (we went to one of the restaurants and it was fabulous) and sights, as well as directions to the hiking trail to go up to the Moorish Castle. Overall a very relaxing and welcoming stay, and one of the best we had during our three week tour of Portugal.

I have been to Portugal 5 times in the last 6 years and my favorite city is Sintra. After my husband's and my first time staying here (Cinco) 6 years ago I have stayed here again twice. If I go to Sintra, Cinco is where I stay. It's like going to stay with family. Thank you Carole for stocking what I like to eat and for the special little bottle of wine!

Me and my boyfriend stayed over to celebrate Valentine at this nice cottage. Carole (and Jack) gave us a warm welcome in the cute cottage. She showed us around and it had everything we wished for and even more! Despite the bad weather we had a great time visting Sintra and the staying in the cottage. The breakfast was very nice and lovely! If you're hesitating to book, don't just go ;)
