Hotel Escola is a little gem situated on the very edge of Funchal, bordered by a banana plantation, yet within easy touch of the city by very cheap bus transport. The rest of the island can all be visited from the central bus terminus. The hotel is part of the island College of tourism and catering, and the students are... More

A friend of ours went to live in Madeira a couple of years back, his apartment is opposite to this establishment. In numerous phone calls he waxed lyrical about the food here, he eats every lunch time here. We have visited the hotel escola on two holiday visits. The first time, I didn't know what to expect, my own school... More

I've visited this hotel with a couple friends (ages 20-30). Everybody who worked there is really friendly and the service is exquisite. The room was good enough to stay in for a week, got cleaned every day and had a really nice view. There are restaurants, café's and supermarkets nearby. At about 50 meters downhill there is a busstop that... More

Spent a week here at the end of September and it was lovely. Only 20 rooms which makes for a far more personal service and the restaurant is excellent and very good value, usually we try and go somewhere different every night but ended up eating here 3 nights. Reception staff were very helpful especially the lady (Lilliana I think!)... More

This hotel is setup as a training school for those willing to work in the hotel / tourism branche. Although setup for training purposes, the staff was extremely, professional, helpfull, friendly and cooperative, we really felt like valued guests. The facilities are are good, there is a good restaurant with obviously the possibilities to have your meals outside and also... More

We stayed here for 3 nights and found the hotel lovely. The reception team are very friendly and speak good English. They are always willing to call you taxis and give you advice. The location is a bit out of the way of things and in a hill area but you can get taxis everywhere quite cheaply so it's really... More

We discovered this restaurant in 2015 and like it so much we went back for a 2nd visit and even recommended it to friends. That meant that it had to be on our list for 2016. Much is as good as ever, but the big disappointment was the steak we ordered as the main course. Some wanted well done, others... More

My wife has a gluten allergy and the hotel staff went out of their way to ensure she did not have any gluten. On the third day they had arranged for gluten free bread to be available. The hotel as a whole was very good with the reception staff giving us bus cards which we could have charged up in... More

Lovely clean hotel, a little out of Funchal but very easily reached by bus 2, local transport is superb. Our room had a sea view but then think all the rooms do. Breakfast was adequate, you wont starve but it doesn't blow you away, fresh fruit which is brill but no toaster or eggs leave things limited in choice. We... More

Where to start...? At the beginning, of course! Smiling, friendly and efficient check-in, which always starts a visit off well. Our room had a beautiful view over the sea to the west which gave us a pretty (and short) sunset every day, watched from the very generous balcony which wasn't over-looked by any other rooms. The room itself was very... More
