A very nice large hotel with welcoming staff at Reception. Very nice rooms and facilities. Breakfast is good with a great selection of food, although a bit chaotic. The hotel can be difficult to navigate, due to signage. If you book a room with a sea view, in reality, it may mean a room facing the ocean.

2nd time at the Alto Lido and we have booked to come back in November. We just love the hotel it’s light bright and very comfortable. We booked a studio room again there is a small extra charge but so worth it. The rooms are fabulous and exceptionally clean. Very comfortable bed and pillows. We absolutely love Madeira and this hotel. We stayed b&b this time and found some lovely restaurants. The breakfast is very good but gets very busy so we started going nearer 10 and it was a little less crowded. Only criticism is the coffee from the machines we just couldn’t drink it as very bitter even the cappuccino/latte, so we just had orange juice which was fine, oh and champagne one morning as there are bottles every morning you can help yourself too. It was my husband’s birthday while there and a lovely cake was delivered to the room so that was nice of the hotel. Also there was a bowl of fruit in our room on arrival so I guess that’s because we were a return booking. Can’t wait to return!

Lovely hotel. Our room on the second floor was spacious and clean. Small kitchenette handy for basic meal preparation, not that we did any cooking! You can choose whether to have your towels/bedding changed which I think is very environmentally friendly. We stayed on a B&B basis, and the buffet style breakfast had so much choice you couldn't fail to find something to enjoy. You can even have omelettes freshly made with ingredients of your choice. The staff all look smart and clean and they clear/reset the tables very quickly. There is a tips box in the restaurant - please use it to show your appreciation. We used the indoor swimming pool once on a cool day, but preferred the outdoor pool which was refreshing! A towel is provided in your room for sunbathing/swimming, which was a nice touch. Nice outdoor bar area where we bought a delicious club sandwich which came with chips - I advise you to share unless you have a big appetite! There is a gym, sauna and spa area, but never used them. Reception staff very helpful when we enquired about bus times to Camara de Lobos. Hotel is well situated, close to plenty of restaurants (also reviewed) and supermarkets. Downhill walk into Funchal, but plenty of buses back if you can't manage the return walk! Good bus services to and from Funchal which are always busy. You can also get buses to the Botanical Gardens and Monte, which are quite the experience! The only thing we didn't like was the breakfast coffee from the machines, but a very small negative. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely stay here again. The weather was so warm we may consider spending all of January here next year! Extra note - there is building work going on next door. Jet2 gave us the option of changing hotels, but I am glad we didn't! We were unbothered by any noise.

This is a very good value hotel and I had a lovely holiday here. The location is good on the Estrada Monumental and conveniently located for restaurants and facilities. The room I had was very nice, on the 15th floor with a view to the sea. I had a very nice bedroom with a comfortable bed and a really well designed and thought through bathroom with good water pressure in the shower and plenty of space. Towels could have been a bit bigger but everything was good. The lady who cleaned the room was also really good and efficient and did a great job (I didn't get her name but she had red hair and a lovely smile). Everything was spotlessly clean throughout. I spent a lot of time by the indoor pool which was very well maintained and checked regularly. I'd have liked the water a bit warmer but it was very pleasant and quiet. I had a very good massage with Diana which was relaxing and I'd recommend her. I stayed B&B so can't comment on the food other than breakfast. The breakfast was very pleasant and varied. There was a good range of products including meats, cheeses and breads. I think there should be something for everyone. I mean it wasn't the best breakfast I've ever had, but it was plentiful and the dishes were filled up regularly. I'd definitely stay here again as it's a really good value hotel in a good location. When I booked it Jet2 told me there was construction nearby which might be noisy. This wasn't a problem on my side of the hotel so it's worth making sure you're in a quiet location.

After a faulty start, where the suite we booked wasn't available, this problem was soon sorted by the excellent jet2 reps, the holel proved to be one of the best we have ever stayed in. In a excellent location ,30 min walk into funchal center, lots of excellent restaurants close by. The suite we had, 901, was high up on a corner with tremendous views. The hotel amenities are great ,from the indoor and outdoor pools to the pool and main bar. The staff are friendly and extremely helpful, especially when we had a medical problem. There is entertainment each night, maybe not to everyone's taste, but the guests make the most of it and the bar becomes a social gathering hub. We were b & b so can't comment on the meals, breakfast was as you would expect ok. The whole hotel is of a modern design and is very well maintained and clean. Would definitely go back, and would recommend getting a suite. One word of caution, if you were to take ill, do not go to the local hospital, it is appalling.

This was our 2nd stay, the first being May/June 2022. Both times we have chosen a studio room with side sea view. First time we were in a room on the third floor at the front of the hotel, from here we had a view of the sea, between the hotels across the road, from here we enjoyed people watching along the Estrada Monumental. Second time we were on the 5th floor, at the back of the hotel, behind the children's pool. We had a good sea view from this room and could see the cruise ships arriving and leaving. Both rooms had a balcony that got the sun all day long, which was great. Maybe not what people expect of a 4 star hotel, but for what we paid for our package holiday, it was really good value. Studios rooms are very spacious, but drawer space is lacking in some of the rooms. Beds are two singles put together and are really comfortable. We found that the shower pressure was poor, but don't remember this being the case last time we stayed there, so may depend on whereabouts in the hotel your room is situated. We stayed on bed and breakfast basis, but wouldn't stay half-board as the evening meal isn't great, maybe not really for the British taste. Last year we were upgraded to half-board, due to the building work next door, but only went for the evening meal about 50% of the time, due to it not being to our taste. Breakfast is substantial, with a good variety of food to choose from. The hotel is in a good position for the supermarket, shopping centre, restaurants, bars and lido promenade walks. Unfortunately, our favourite bare, the Lido Tavern, were closed for a holiday, but we discovered that the bottle store also serves as a nice little bar. We would definitely stay here again, we are not lovers of hotels, but feel comfortable at the Alto Lido.

Good location, nice staff, clean and tidy, plenty of restaurants nearby and a nice walk into old town. We stayed B&B For a week it was ok, the cost of the evening buffet was way over priced for an all inclusive buffet, we had planned to eat out every night with so much choice nearby , nice Indian just opposite the hotel. I was hoping to have a game of snooker whilst staying at the hotel, they wanted 10euros for an hour, which is a bit expensive , but when I was offered the cues and balls, Well the cues were C..., Pool cues with no tips !! The lady stated when she saw my face , 'The cues are not the best ! No S... Sherlock ! Come on Alto Lido invest in few decent snooker cue's , I'm not asking for top of the range , a 100 euros will get you a few cues, sort it or remove the snooker table , maybe get some pool tables in ??

Many plus points of this hotel 40 minutes walk from the centre but the Monumental area has its own shops, hotels and restaurants. Also you can take a number 1 bus into the centre for about 1 euro. I loved the buffet breakfast. There was plenty of choice. Cooked or cold. I don't really understand what more the complainers expect! Great pool area inside and out. Plenty of room to lie on a chair and get some winter sun. The whole hotel was spacious. The room was spacious and modern. The cleaning staff and breakfast staff were excellent. Areas to improve: I agree about the juice at breakfast. Surely they could offer one fresh juice? Reception staff needed to check that the room was ready when we arrived after 3pm. It wasn't ready so we were moved, which was good but we had to tell them. I opted for a massage in the hotel but it wasn't great. I probably should have checked out credentials better. I don't know why they charge for a safety box. Who does that? I also find it strange that they charge for the sauna facilities.

We are just coming towards the end of a 7 night stay at the Alto Lido. Upon arrival, the entrance to the hotel is not particularly welcoming - it smells of cigarettes! There is no concierge to take bags and cases to the room, which we would expect of a 4* hotel. As others have mentioned, there are just two small lifts for the entire hotel (that state they hold 4 people). The wait can be long, and we often ending up opting for the stairs instead - despite being on the 9th floor! The breakfast is extremely poor, probably the worst we have experienced in a hotel. It has a canteen feel to it, it is busy and cramped, with many large tables that you have to share with other guests. There is no one showing you to a table, so it literally is a free for all. The food is extremely basic and poor quality (stale bread and cakes, fried eggs that look like they have been there hours, pancakes stacked up on the side going cold, flies…). There is also little logic to the set up of it, with bread and cakes at one end, then pastries at the opposite side. The butter? Not with the bread, but next to the pastries. Hygiene needs to be promoted as many guests were grabbing food items with their hands. The whole breakfast experience needs a big overhaul! We ended up going out for breakfast each day, and if room only was an option, we’d definitely have opted for it in hindsight. The rooms itself are ok, pretty basic. There are no mod cons like usb sockets, there is a charge for the safe and the walls are paper thin and everything can be heard from neighbouring rooms or the corridor. The room was very warm and although the hotel is advertised as having air con, when we queried this at reception we were told as it is winter it does not work. We have struggled to sleep, despite the bed being comfortable, as it just gets too stuffy and hot. Especially not good when pregnant! Leaving the patio doors wide open is not an option as the neighbouring roads are noisy. Due to us having lovely weather, we have spent a good amount of time each day sunbathing near to the pool. The area is clean with plenty of beds and people seemed to be enjoying the pool too. We had food at the pool bar almost daily, which we really enjoyed. The toasties, club sandwiches, chicken sandwich - all good. The service was somewhat inconsistent however. Sometimes we have been served at the table, other times we’ve waited and waited but then ended up collecting menus, ordering and paying at the bar. It seems to be when the 2 or 3 ladies are on together, there are far too busy chatting to one another to offer much service. And I’d also add, that it’s definitely not busy there with a handful of tables occupied each time. We have enjoyed our time back in Funchal, but sadly would not return to this hotel.

Hotel very modern, light and clean although the landing carpets are badly in need of replacement. Bedroom modern and functional although i would choose a bedroom next time facing the pool to avoid the sound of traffic. Bed is comfortable. Main meal was traditionally cooking using local ingredients which was lovely. We were all iclusive which meant free beer and local spirits and wine between 11 am and 11 pm, ice cream 3 until 4 pm and snacks 4 pm until 4.30 pm. The snacks on the first day where really nice with plenty of choice but unfortunately the selection seened to reduce as the week went on.. All im all a good hotel for couples . Coffee in the main bar is alot nicer than the restaurant and pool bar. We were disappointed with the orange juice at breakfast as it wasnt freshly sqeezed when fruit here is plentiful and cheap.
