We live in U.K. and were looking for a short Pre-Springtime break which offered sunshine, good food, some form of cultural history and excellent facilities combined with a relatively short flight from UK.

When searching we realised that Madeira could be an ideal candidate and stumbled on
Quinta Jardins Do Lago in Madeira as it checked most the boxes.

We were not sure what Quinta meant but discovered that a Quinta describes a rural property, especially those with historic manors and palaces typically found on the outskirts of towns in Portugal, which aptly defines Quinta Jardins Do Lago.

Top line, this was one of the best experiences we have ever had the good fortune to enjoy.

We arrived at the Hotel, via a short Taxi ride from Madeira Airport which cost €35.00 which was organised for us by Quinta Jardins Do Lago.

The Front of house reception staff were charming and could not have been more helpful.

Our room was on the 3rd (top) floor and the view from our balcony was spectacular.

The room was very well designed with traditional Portuguese décor including Polished wooden floors and high-quality furnishings, it was totally in keeping with the historic setting. It was also comfortable and relaxing, with a Super King-sized bed along with a larger bathroom with twin sinks, a bath and “his’n’ hers” white bathrobes.

It had a small balcony which was nice to sit out on when the mood took us.

From the balcony the views are amazing with no high rises in sight. Just a myriad of homes, predominantly white, dotted across the landscape with the lovely (classic) “monk and nun” style terracotta roofs reminiscent of properties in the Mediterranean and North African regions.

As as side bar, the rooms have highly effective blackout curtains so you can get a good night’s sleep without the light disturbing you. Although there is a charming dawn chorus which you might cathartic.

The pool area we could see tucked away at the end of the garden in amongst what looked like a forest of palm trees.

The star of the Gardens though is Colombo a 68-year-old giant female tortoise imported by the Owners from the Galápagos Islands as a baby! Story has it that when the Ship landed, she was concealed in a large pocket of the Owner but shes really taken to living in Madeira!

The general manager told us that when the island suffered from devastating forest fires a couple of years ago, returning guests called the hotel in their droves. Not to check the hotel was still open but to check on Colombo’s well-being!

Maybe an apocryphal story but during COVID, due to few people being around, Colombo suffered a “nervous breakdown” such was the shock of being seemingly abandoned and missing human company!

The Manor House is where Main meals are served and enjoyed by guests. Built in the 18th Century it is dripping with historical features. We couldn’t determine some of the fine Art dotted around the Hotel, but it was impressive.

Dining here was excellent albeit reasonably expensive.

The serving staff once again were charming and attentive and the menu choices excellent.
It really felt quite opulent to be dining here and the food arrived in style, some dishes served under a silver dome (cloche) which is taken away with great aplomb!

They have eminently captured the history and style of the house in the dining experience extremely capably.

For breakfast there is a terrace some under the shelter of a lovely Veranda reminiscent of Colonial India with a superb buffet spread and your choice of eggs with, if you ask, a Cappuccino and/or Latte plus Prosecco with Orange Juice for a Mimosa to kick start your day!

The starched white Napkins, elegant fine bone china and high-quality cutlery add that additional touch of class. It really feels like a throwback to a bygone era.

There is also a priceless tiled mosaic on the wall as well as the stunning garden views, of course!

Colombo is often positioned close by!

Daytime dining is by the shallow but swimmable pool.

The food is particularly good quality and Al Fresco if you so choose, but shade is available with quality Sun Loungers with extremely comfortable mattresses with fresh Towels provided.

There is a Bar by the Pool plus what looks like an imitation of the Bridge of Sighs in Venice leading from one side of the Pool to another.

Taking the time to explore the grounds during your stay is essential. They really are the most magical feature of the property with many little sun traps and imaginative spots or nooks and crannies to enjoy, or just sit and read there.

The gardens are effectively an attraction in themselves and draw many people to stay at the hotel.

With over 500 rare species you are sure to find Plants, Shrubs or Trees from all corners of the Globe.

Should it rain or be chilly, the Manor House has plenty of comfortable seating as well as a library and games room including pool or snooker table.

We spent some time by the pool just soaking up the sun but remember to take/apply the right factor level of sunscreen as it can get extremely hot.

A key point to remember is that the hotel also has regular transfers, or a Shuttle Service, going into town at various times of the day and the staff on front desk are full of great advice for day trips too.

It is worth booking these Shuttles early as they are understandably extremely popular!

Taxi’s back from Funchal (as of March 2024) cost in the region of €8.00.

Overall, it was a truly memorable holiday and exceeded our expectations by some considerable margin.

We shall return, if only to see Colombo again!

Madeira is a place we have wanted to visit for a long time but never got round to. Friends gave us various suggestions as to where to stay, nearly all large establishments within the hotel quarter to the west of town. Whist clearly all of a good standard they didn't really appeal and it was suggested that perhaps a Quinta might be a smaller more unique setting.

The reviews of Jardins do Lago were so good it was hard to imagine that they could all be true. Having just returned from a blissful week it is a pleasure to confirm that they are and more. Here is a small hotel with impeccable standards, revisited regularly by many, many discerning guests, all of whom hold it in very high regard and the staff with admiration and genuine affection.

If you wanted to send a hotel manager anywhere for a few days to see how it can be done then this is it! Exceptional setting, gardens to die for, beautiful rooms and general facilities. And above all amazing staff. Always a helpful smile, nothing too much trouble, not a raised voice to be heard. Calmness rules.

The food was excellent too. Some may find the beautiful dining room a little formal for a whole week but there are any number of good restaurants to find in Funchal and the staff were happy to make suggestions and reservations. The courtesy mini bus service throughout the day was excellent given the location 10 minutes from the centre of Funchal and a return by taxi later in the evening cost about Euro 8.

Would we stay again? - most definitely. Don't hesitate, we couldn't stay anywhere else.
Say hi to Columbo!

We came back with some slight trepidation that it might not be as good as we remembered. How wrong we were - it was even better this time. We treated ourselves to a junior suite which was worth it for the bathroom alone to say nothing of the unrivalled view into the pristine first class gardens.

The food was excellent and if you don't like something on the 5 course menu then they are more than happy to swap it for something you prefer. Notwithstanding all of this, it is the staff and their unrivalled attention to detail together with their genuine and unremitting commitment to make your time here as good as it possibly can be that sets this hotel as one of the best that there is.

Whatever you want to do, from high energy hiking through to simply relaxing by the pool, your every whim will be indulged in this superlative hotel on this magical island.

We're already planning our next trip here !!

How wonderful to discover this 100 year old garden with acres of unusual trees and flowering plants.
We were so lucky on our first visit to be shown around the garden by Rubina who told us of the history of the house and share her love of plants with us .
As a Gardener, I was in Paradise seeing so many collectors’ items from the plant world, all brought together here in this garden and so clearly labelled and looked after. The gardeners, both male and female, were all working extremely hard watering, pruning and top dressing the plants to keep up the 5 star standard. It was like Kew Gardens! Colombo, the resident Galapagos tortoise, smiled at us and added to the surreal surroundings. We did so enjoy our time talking with Rubina and meeting other members of the team. The immaculately dressed housekeeping lady changing the flowers, the Manager, adding a small framed sketch in the library that a guest had presented them with.
Rubina led us to the Colombo Bistro by the swimming pool, where Eduardo looked after us with 5 star professionalism suggesting dishes that we might enjoy.
The times spent at the poolside bistro were very enjoyable and we enjoyed pasta dishes with lovely flavour, giant grilled prawns heavy and succulent and on Eduardo’s recommendation, the very best apple pie served with real vanilla ice cream. To finish each meal a couple of glasses of complimentary Madeira Wine.
The offer of a lift down the hill was gratefully taken up and the driver of the shuttle saloon very courteous and friendly.
It is the people at Quinta Jardins do Lago that makes this a very special and quite unique place. They are working hard together with such a pride and it shows in their care. We will certainly be making a return visit.

Staying at the Quinta Jardins Do Lago made our anniversary even more special and the extra treats ie bottle of complementary bubbly and Afternoon Tea were an added bonus.
When we arrived we were warmly welcomed and shown to our room on the 2nd floor. The room was spacious with tea and coffee making facilities and the most amazing view over the gardens to the ocean. Sunrise was a sight to behold!
Breakfast was served in the garden listening to bird song and the range of food was delicious. Everything you could wish for!

The garden is a peaceful place in which to admire the fantastic range of plants and trees which are clearly labelled.
It was very relaxing sitting in the well designed pool area. Had a swim too. Yes, in February!
Before dinner we enjoyed a cocktail in the bar during Happy Hour and chatted with other guests who gave us useful tips on places to visit.
The evening meal in the elegant Beresford Restaurant was always delicious and beautifully presented.
However, it is ALL the staff at this hotel who are the stars. They are all cheerful and helpful and they look after you so well you feel like royalty.
This is an exceptionally well run hotel with a courtesy bus service taking you into the centre of Funchal seven days a week.
At the end of our holiday the staff bid us a fond farewell and waved us on our way. Such a touchin gesture.
Of course we shall be returning for we have found our little piece of paradise.

This was our 4th visit to this beautiful hotel and it was well worth all the hassle of vaccinations, form filling etc. needed to get us there and back. It is indeed a very special place. The beautiful botanical gardens in which it is set are such a delight and strolling through them is a totally relaxing experience in itself - not to mention saying a daily ‘hello’ to Colombo the 60+ year old tortoise. It is really lovely to be just that bit away from the bustle of the city centre.

The main part of the house is the original Quinta which is beautifully furnished in the appropriate style with cleaning gorgeous wooden floors. Everywhere is spotlessly clean, extremely comfortable and Covid safe. We have always stayed in the newer part of the hotel where rooms are spacious and very comfortable - especially the beds! It is worth paying a little extra for a room with a balcony overlooking the gardens. Looking over the lights of the city in the evening is just delightful.

I don’t think you will find friendlier and more helpful staff anywhere. They simply can’t do enough to make you feel welcome and to give assistance where needed. We wanted to take advantage of the Madeira government’s offer of a free test for our return journey and not only did they make all the necessary arrangements, we were taken there and back in the hotel transport.

We always take the bed and breakfast option as there are so many good restaurants in Funchal which we like to try but the breakfast is excellent, though no buffet selection at the moment due to COVID restrictions. We always have at least one meal in the main restaurant and the food there is of a very high standard. We love the Colombo restaurant at the side of the beautiful swimming pool which has an excellent lunchtime selection.

I would say that the only thing some might see as a drawback is that it is really too far out to walk into the centre of the city, The hotel does run a mini bus service during the day. It could perhaps be a little more frequent. It doesn’t operate in the evenings but the hotel will arrange for a taxi whenever you want one. It normally costs around €8/10 each way and taxis are very plentiful.

If you are looking for a high quality hotel in Funchal with top rate service, beautiful surroundings, a relaxing atmosphere and fantastic staff you will not find anywhere better

We have just spent 10 days at this beautiful hotel. This small luxury hotel incorporates the original Quinta which houses several top suites as well as the restaurant, bar and library amongst other things.

The remaining accommodation is located adjacent to the Quinta and is accessed internally. All of the public areas as well as the rooms are beautifully furnished in traditional Madeiran style with classic furnishings, artwork and antiques. Beautiful dark wood floors as well as stylish tiles and carpets are seen in the public areas as well as in the bedrooms. Spotlessly clean throughout, and the hotel’s attention to safety regarding Covid measures were second to none.
All of the well sized bedrooms have individual terraces/balconies and overlook the gardens.

The hotel is situated in its own enormous botanical gardens which are beautifully kept. A gardener’s paradise! Colombos, the resident giant tortoise can be seen sunning himself near his den and loves being stroked by the guests!

The heated swimming pool which is beautifully landscaped is set in a most attractive setting amongst the gardens Lunch can be enjoyed in the separate dining area adjacent to the pool bar.

Although the hotel’s 40 odd rooms were fully occupied during our stay the pool area was never crowded and there were plenty of sun loungers available and well-spaced out.

Breakfast was served in the garden and whereas prior to the arrival of Covid the hotel had a buffet breakfast, this is no longer the case. Guests are now given an extensive breakfast menu and everything is prepared freshly to order and served directly to guest’s tables. The standard and quality of food, not to mention presentation was excellent.

We dined every night at the hotel, having opted for the half board arrangement. We were not disappointed and there was fixed 5 course table d’hote menu which changed daily. Of course they also have an a la carte menu with a very extensive wine list to suit everyone. Again, like breakfast, the quality and presentation was second to none. Like breakfast, dinner was also served in the gardens.

The entire team of staff were warm, welcoming and did everything possible to ensure that your stay was memorable for all the right reasons. They even assisted us and other guests in booking pre-flight Covid tests, and where guests needed assistance to complete the locator forms they were more than happy to assist! Service above and beyond!.

We understand that at the time we were staying at the hotel, 49% of the guests were returnees and we can understand why. We too have already decided that we will be returning next year!

A huge thank you to the entire team for a most memorable holiday, and we look forward to our next visit to this beautiful hotel.

I wrote a review some nine years ago and since that time this hotel has retained all its charm and remained an oasis of calm and joy despite all the vicissitudes of the COVID Pandemic. Arriving at the hotel you enter a world where guest service and attention to detail is paramount; where the rooms are spacious, well-appointed, immaculately clean (so important currently), the public areas have great charm and again spotlessly clean all surrounded by gardens which are a botanical heaven. The pandemic has nurtured all that is best in this Quinta the day beginning with an attentively and professionally served a la carte breakfast within this botanical treasure, daytime food and beverage service by the pool ending with dinner either in the majestic dining rooms adorned with wonderful paintings or again in the garden – weather permitting. The dinner menu features the best of fresh local produce delightfully presented and attentively served.
I emphasise that this hotel is taking the COVID Pandemic very seriously without impacting on the enjoyment of a relaxing holiday: a la carte service throughout, spotlessly clean, just 40 rooms so no crowding and is ideal in these difficult times This is a privately run boutique hotel where the management team is totally involved in every detail and has created a brand image with one outstanding USP 'Each guest is an individual and is treated as such in a setting which is magically unique and well maintained'. My wife and I have just concluded our 38th visit and we have already booked numbers 39 to 41. The hotel is busy unlike many currently, and this is a testament to the welcoming splendour and safe environment that is Quinta Jardins do Lago today. This Quinta has many returning guests again emphasising its enormous appeal. Ad Multos Annos!!

Madeira is a fabulous vacation destination, and staying at Quinta Jardins do Lago was an amazing hotel in which to finish our trip. Easily the best hotel of our holiday. From the first email to the last minute at the hotel, the attention to service and detail was impeccable. The grounds are spectacular and beautifully manicured, and the room was beyond our expectation, with terrace and outdoor lounges, and huge welcome basket of fresh fruit. Just lovely. The reception staff could not have been more helpful, in every respect. Susana was absolutely delightful and arranged transportation for pick up from another hotel, and arrival of our luggage to the Quinta while we hiked our way there. She also arranged for our pre-departure Covid test at a local clinic, as required by Britain for transit, and the US for entry. We really appreciated not having to figure that out on our own, and the hotel van took us there, waited, and brought us back to the hotel.
Pedro spent many patient minutes discussing hiking options with us each night, and arranging transport to trailheads the following day. Every person we came in contact with was courteous, smiling, and professional. The dining room staff was excellent and so pleasant also. We enjoyed many delicious meals al fresco in the evening, and the breakfast each morning in the garden was copious with a great selection of choice.
We loved the historic nature of the property and antique filled interiors. The hotel is located away from the heavily touristed harbor area, yet still has views of the ocean, in a quiet residential area. There is a cafe and a small family grocery store just around the corner from the hotel which was super convenient...not that we were hungry after our meals at the hotel.
The pool was heated to a very comfortable temperature and the deck area was relaxing. Whatever you needed, someone was there to get it for you.
I can't say enough about what a wonderful experience it was to stay at Jardins do Lago. There are so many reasons to go back to Madeira, but I would go just to stay here!! I can't wait to return and stay at Quinta Jardins do Lago once again. Pure luxury and excellence.

We are just back from a week at the hotel. Things were brilliant from the start as we got upgraded to a large suite. Service is impeccable on the normal things let alone the help with tests etc before we came home.
The standard of accommodation was excellent throughout. It sort of Portuguese modern imperial!!!
We were breakfast only but decided to have dinner 4 times at the hotel as the choice and service was very good.
The hotel is on one many of the hills above Funchal. There is a regular transfer service in the day but we did not use it. Instead we walked down the town which took us about 20 mins. Its a little steep in 2 places and some parts do not have a pavement but it is safe if you are careful. Normally we would get a cab back at a cost of c.8 Euros. However, we did walk back twice which took 25 mins with the 2 steep parts quite interesting.
I jogged down the hill to the town and port which was fun. The gym is a bit small but adequate and the pool superb.
The gardens are impeccable and really botanical (and we are members of Kew). The tortoise was also lovely.
Its very difficult to find any faults.....if I had to it would be breakfast could be a bit slow in the garden (because the buffet is suspended) so if you are on an early morning trip get it served to your room. Also, please replace the coffee pots as you cannot pour coffee without spilling a drip on the pristine white table clothes. Really this is no criticism at all. We will be back!!!
PS - the local shop and café 100m to the left of the hotel is also very good. The shop makes excellent paninis for any day trips but i am sure you can get these in the hotel.
