The hotel’s outlook and location are the real highlight - right on the seafront and you can watch the sunset from the hotel garden or your balcony. We had a sea view room with a balcony, which was a generous size and very clean. The buffet breakfast has a good selection of food. My partner has several food intolerances and it was really helpful that most dishes listed any allergens, and the waiting staff brought him soya milk for breakfast. The dinner buffet was good but I found it quite expensive (€28.50 per person) when there are restaurants nearby where you can have dinner and wine for two people for ~€45. I’d highly recommend Tradicional, Doca do Cavavas and Restaurante Marisqueira O Barqueiro - all a couple of minutes walk from the hotel and excellent food and value for money. There is a bus stop right outside where you can catch the bus into Funchal (a 20 minute journey) and the yellow hop on/off bus. The staff were friendly and helpful. We had a late flight on our check out day, and we were allowed to use the pool area after we had checked out of our room. Would stay again!…

Fantastic honeymoon by the sea - the complimentary wine and fruit basket were a lovely touch when they found out we were just married. Very attentive staff, particularly Liliana, as I'm coeliac with a gf diet they catered superbly. They even got us a taxi within minutes to make sure we didnt miss a ferry excursion. Great amenities, indoor and outdoor pools etc - we loved it!

Brilliant hotel for those with access needs. The accessible rooms are huuuuuuge!! The shower is tailor made with a walk in shower and a pull down seat and loads of grab handles. It's a way out of the capital but if you walk in the opposite direction there are some good facilities: cafe and supermarket ( one of the very best shops I have ever been to). I am sure there are regular buses that go direct to the town centre and back till very late at night. If you walk towards Funchal - less than half a mile is a wonderful shopping centre called the Forum - which has another supermarket and many tasteful shops, including a fabulous gelato place! The hotel has fairly good facilities - and the two swimming pools are both very accessible with ramps to get in. The indoor pool though is not very pre-possessing, based in an industrially sort of room with a rather shabby looking, though large pool. Forget the spa - there is never anyone there! Breakfasts are more than adequate with a plethora of choices, some of which change daily. Gardens are nice to sit in and staff are all fantastic from the serving staff to reception - they simply cannot do enough for you. Evening meals are somewhat disappointing as they are mass made and not really what we were looking for. I understand there is entertainment nightly though we never went. Would I go again - yes, of course, when you have accessibility needs this is made to measure!…

Excellent, with just a few flaws.... We arrived on Sunday 1st and reception were very welcoming, we had booked our rooms over a year in advance as we were having our wedding here on Monday 9th, so this part should have been easy. We had booked a frontal sea view and as we had booked a year in advance had asked for the top floor if available. Unfortunately we were given room C019, which was neither on the top floor or front of the building. Weirdly the hotel class the 3 room on the side of the hotel but nearest the front as the same as the 3 front rooms, which is clearly not the same and should be changed. So after my partner cried for a minute I went back to reception to complain. Luckily for us, and the hotel, 2 people were leaving the front room which we had previously been shown the following day. A bit of a pain as it meant we didn't unpack, but not the end of the world. We have 2 teenage daughters, we asked for pool view rooms next to each other, again a year in advance this shouldn't be too difficult, but they ended up at opposite ends of the block we were in. I asked reception about this also but they couldn't move either of them, so gave up. The room we ended up in C121 was amazing, veiws to die for and the bed facing straight out to sea. C019 felt old and tired, with the view no better than any of the pool view rooms so we were glad to be out of there. Breakfast is nice, nothing amazing but adequate for us. The lady doing the eggs was lovely and let me practice my Portuguese on her every day! We had 34 guests for the wedding, which went perfectly and better than planned. Carla is the events manager and she is simply AMAZING. The hotel asked of they could use our wedding flowers to put round the hotel, we obviously said yes and this looked great as we walked round each day. All the staff were great, very friendly and helpful and the room cleaning staff are brilliant. They would fold our childrens clothes that they left all over the place, and they made a lovely decoration on our wedding night. The only slight thing to mention was the pool bar and main bar..... It could take anything from a few minutes to 10 minutes to get a drink at times, 20 minutes in the main bar if you ordered a cocktail. Food took ages to come, with a burger taking over an hour one day. We often got the wrong drinks or food but we were obviously speaking a different language so can be expected on occasion. The pool is lovely, I thought it was the perfect temperature to cool off given how hot it was while we were there. Not sure about later in the year but it was 34-38 degrees most the time we were there. No iron in the room either, you can get one but have to pay 5 euros to hire it which is a new one for us! Taxis from reception are easy to get but we would mostly walk or scooter down to the main lido area. All in all we really enjoyed our stay at the Golden Residence Hotel, the staff were truly amazing and we appreciated everything you did for us throughout our special stay. If it wasn't for the issue with the rooms and them needing a bit of a revamp it would have been 5 stars without a doubt, but this did put a slight downer for us on our arrival. …

Serious safety incident
A WARNING TO ALL WOMEN LOOKING TO STAY AT GOLDEN RESIDENCE: I was sexually violated by the resident masseuse, Bernardino during my massage. He began by saying suggestive things and it progressed to him touching and massaging my private parts, despite my direct request for him to stop. When I shared this vulnerable information with several of the hotel staff, the woman manager gaslit my experience, saying things like “why did you get a massage so late at night?” and “in my opinion you should have got up and left.” After speaking extensively with multiple managers, there was no action or accountability taken and they still made me pay for my massage. I’m sharing my story because as far as I know this man is still the resident massage therapist and I don’t want any other women to experience what I went through.…

You should be more careful with your words; you are trying to demolish the character of a very serious man and of our organization. your behavior is unacceptable! First and foremost: you said that: if you did not pay for the massage, the subject was over. BUT, we made you pay because we have total trust in our staff and specially in our masseur. What we see in the hotel’s CCTV (security cameras) is you passing by reception, after the massage, looking happy and relaxed. When we asked you, if we should call the police to report the masseur, you refused. Last but not least: We don't shy away from threats of bad reviews; when we know we're right and when we realize that the objective is simply not to pay for services obtained. This is a lovely hotel with good staff however it is not a four star hotel in its amenities or services as well as decor. We arrived at 9:30pm due to our flight times and the restaurant closed at 10pm with no room service. There were no complimentary snack or water in the room and only two tea bags and instant coffee with no milk. The rooms are very dated in their decor, lots of tacky MDF Furniture and wall panels, however the rooms are a decent size. The lights aren’t very nice and are very dated. The bathrooms are basic and the shower is nothing special. There is a very small TV. There was only one pillow each on the bed and no extra in the room. There is no TV in the bedroom. The best part of the room was the balcony which even in block A (the furthest away) there is a sea view. The hotel itself has a very strange layout meaning that if you’re in Block A you have to walk all the way to the back of the hotel and there is only ONE lift for 7 floors which can mean waiting ten minutes to get up to your floor. The gym is in block A and the Spa facilities in Block C which doesn’t make much sense, but this can’t be changed easily. I’m sorry to say that the indoor pool isn’t very nice and it was dirty. Also the sauna and steam room need to be requested to be turned on which takes a while and isn’t exactly relaxing. Having said that the outdoor pool is very nice and the balcony over the seafront is stunning! It feels like nothing is particularly easy here. Finding your way around, having to call reception to access your safe, no extra pillows or an iron in your room. And the silliest rule is that you can’t get pool towels just til mid-day when the pools open at 7am, it made for a very chilly start to the day. Having point out some flaws, the staff were lovely and the location is great. Very close to Funchal by car and a lo. vely stroll along the seafront promenade at night with many different restaurants really made our evenings. It’s a nice hotel, it’s a stunning location and Madeira is amazing, but this is not 4 stars.…

Lovely and friendly staff, not their fault but our first apartment was equipped for disabled people with a pull out hob and sink, all very low. Staff very kindly got us moved to a different one on the second floor, and this apartment was excellent. We didn't hear the construction work hardly at all. The indoor swimming pool was excellent and very clean, we swam every day. Liliana on reception (apologies if name spelt wrong) was very helpful explaining about things to do (and an excellent ice cream shop) and the bus service, the bus stop is right outside the hotel, cheaper to get a one day bus pass, can use as many times as you like in the one day. Cleaners came in when you requested and did a very good job. Lovely location Only comment would be for a self catering apartment either a toaster of grill would off been good.…

We booked a seven-night stay at the Golden Residence Hotel in Funchal, Madeira, from August 31st to 7th September 2023, primarily because of the extensive spa services that were advertised on the EasyJet Holidays website. The hotel is nice in most areas, but it can be tiresome having to move between the blocks and the lifts are quite slow. The breakfast has good options but some of the quality of the items was low for a 4 star hotel. We were also surprised you had to book a specific time slot for breakfast. Upon arrival, we were told the spa was open from 7 am to 9 pm. However, on September 1st, when we tried to access it at 4 pm, we were denied access due to unannounced maintenance. The reception informed us it would only be open from 5:30 pm to 9 pm for the following week. We also found the steam room was not due to be fixed during our stay and the indoor and outdoor pool were cold, contradicting Easyjet's website information. The spa was crowded during the reduced hours. Our frustration peaked when we visited the spa again (when we were told the renovations were complete), only to find the entire area covered in dust sheets, with maintenance personnel carrying out extensive renovation work, including the changing rooms and spa shower, whilst customers were present in the facilities. We had also looked forward to booking a spa treatment during our stay, but due to these issues we felt there was no way we would be able to relax and enjoy treatments. There were also some strange charges within the hotel, charge for use of the room safe, charge for use of the lockers in the spa (?). We were only given a pool towel each which we had to exchange daily from 12pm. If you lost one of these towels, there was a risk o a charge. The lack of notice about reduced spa hours and misleading information from EasyJet greatly affected our holiday experience. Dear Guest, Thank you for staying with us. Further to your comment we would like to clarify about our breakfast slot is so that we can provide quality service and customers don't have to wait, so that customers can have a good breakfast service without too many people. The works in the spa were a case of urgent maintenance repair works to be conducted hence why we had no time to advise TO in advance. The emergency was a leaking problem in the SPA ceiling, that suddenly was in 3 points and we had to intervein immediately due to security reasons Please note that during the day usually there are no guests around and this was the best commitment we could do in order to fix the problem and still have guests served with massages and all spa facilities. The guests were informed about this works and special schedule on the lifts. As informed the spa and all it’s facilities were open daily from 17h30. There were no other works in steam room or other facilities. Also would like to inform that there are and never was any charges for lockers in SPA. Took the aerobus from the airport. Bus stops right in front of the hotel (by the way it is stop 22 and not 20 as mentioned on the website from the bus company). Room -in C block- was available around 1.30 pm. Beds are comfortable, bathroom clean and it has a small kitchen. Room can probably use a bit of maintenance. Grout lines are a bit dirty and in some areas paint is coming off the wall. However, we were very satisfied with the cleaning of the room. The pool area looks like the picture and has a beautiful view. It goes from 0.90cm to 1.60cm, so not to deep. We only used the restaurant for breakfast, which was decent and had enough choice, but nothing spectacular. Staff was friendly. Location, although a bit out of the centre is pretty good. Bus 1 en 2 bring you to the city center in about 15 min. Bus 48 goes directly to Monte Palace in about 40 min. Just across the street is the Forum Madeira shopping centre, where you'll find stores like Stradivarius, Bershka, Pull & Bear, Zara, a food court and a big grocery store. We really enjoyed our stay in Madeira and do recommend this hotel.…

Very friendly staff, very accommodating, nice and quiet, great views from the pool terrace. Nice pool. Also, very good indoor pool and spa area on cooler days. It's not their fault but our first apartment was next to a construction site which was so noisy. This was in A block. They moved us to B block and couldn't hear the noise. We would recommend and stay here again : )
