We had our wedding earlier this year in Braga. We had 200 guests, mostly family, and included our grandparents throughout to babies. Ultimately all our guests wanted to stay together so most people booked Melia. For our grandparents that have strict dietary and religious requirements, the suites with kitchens were perfect! The rooms were clean, comfortable with modern deco. From a hotel perspective (other than the quirky bathrooms, which aren’t everyone’s cup of tea) it is a great option. The rooms are clean and staff are friendly, they have a gym with a small charge as well and plenty of parking on site if you are driving/have rented a car. Breakfast is good and with advanced notice they can cater for dietary requirements as well. For transparency, we did have a few issues along the way: 1. We initially couldn’t get a hold of them via email and therefore just turned up, but did have a positive meeting. 2. When everyone started to book their rooms at Meila, they had issues managing the large volume of bookings so had to get personally involved and liaise between guests and the hotel. 3. We then decided to host our first nights event in their event room, which became a negotiation regarding the price and didn’t start int he most commercial of places, despite the volume of business we were bringing to the hotel that weekend. Nevertheless, the hotel brought in management, we had productive meetings and we ended up in a good place. When it came to the actual wedding weekend the hotel and staff were flawless. Everything went well and we had a great pre-wedding night celebration there and everyone’s stay was enjoyable.

Let’s star with the star classification. This could never be a 5 star hotel in America. Appearance, materials like fridge, towels, paper tissue etc are 3rd class not compatible with a 5 star hotel. Bedroom is pathetic. Open style concept with no door between sleeping area and bathroom. No privacy at all and smell from toilette contagious all sleeping area. Single sliding door between toilet and shower area. It is like a 10’ x 5’ area divided in two by a partition that does not go to the top. One single sliding door one side closed the other open. Cannot close both at once. Door is in glass. When showering one cannot prevent water from running out. I stayed at a similar Meliã at the Lisbon airport and smelled of urine. Insane. I promised myself I would never stay there again but forgot it was a Melia and repeated the mistake. Never again.

My comments pertain solely to our experience of the top floor apartment in which we stayed at the Melia in Braga. It was a puzzling combination of luxury and impracticality. First the luxury. We loved the light airy layout, the views across the city, the comfortable beds and chairs, and the large twin multi-channel TV sets. We were grateful for the coffee maker and the lesson on how to use it. The swimming-pool sized spa-bath we left alone. The apartment lights were operated from several keyboards embedded in the walls. I can’t say we found them sympathetic. Although the presentation of the apartment was immaculate, one or two of the numerous cupboard doors needed attention, especially the door jammed under the kitchen sink. The kitchenette came with a refrigerator, a microwave oven, a hob and a full size dishwasher. In the cupboards there were 3 pots as well as plates, mugs and knives for three people but no forks and just one dessert spoon. There was no corkscrew to open wine bottles, no sharp knife for vegetables, no bread knife or bread board, no drying up cloths or soap at the sink and certainly no capsules for the dishwasher. (Why a large dishwasher for a handful of crockery and cutlery?) Any crumbs from meals had to remain on the floor until the apartment was cleaned the following day for there was no broom or brush and pan to sweep them up. Nor was there a bin in the kitchen for scraps. Basically, if you really wanted to spend several days comfortably in the apartment, you had to equip it yourself. The safe was enclosed in a cupboard in an unlit passage. So to use it, you needed a torch. It was obvious that no Melia executive had ever spent a night in the apartment or checked the contents. Whether this is true for the other top floor apartments I couldn’t say. Of course we could have gone to reception but then this message would never have reached Melia management, as it evidently needs to. Our only other complaint was the wretched electronic drumming music the hotel sought to inflict on guests at breakfast. None of the above reflects on the frontline staff, whom we thank for their cordial assistance.

I enjoyed our stay, however, I wouldn't say this is a 5 stars hotel. Too noisy, too busy. The outdoor pool was full of kids and loud music. 10€/hour to use the indoor pool. No tables available at the breakfast area. We had to wait or use the lobby tables. Apart from that, cosy and modern rooms, good shower pressure, well cleaned.

Dear guest, We are grateful for your review about your recent stay at Meliã Braga Hotel & Spa. It is very important for us to understand the level of satisfaction of our customers in order to continue providing excellent stays. Regarding the access to the indoor pool, it is included in several packages available to our customers and it is also included in premium room rates. However, we also give our customers the option to choose if they want to add the access to the spa or not because there are also customers who do not want to use this service and must not pay it if they only request accommodation and breakfast. Looking forward to welcoming you back. Best regards, Marina Magalhães - on behalf of the Guest Experience Manager

There’s no chance this hotel is 5 star - probably a 3 star. Wi-Fi is non existent in this hotel while the communication was very slow and poor. Irons are not in every room, and when we asked reception the response was to ‘ask about and to try borrow one from another room’ as there was a long waiting list. The outside pool is surrounded by a busy motorway while it’s €10 per person per hour to use the inside one and spa. Water and toilet paper wasn’t refilled during our stay either. Shower very temperamental and knob has to be turned 360 degrees as it’s scalding hot.

Very good hotel with nice spa and pool outside, located not far away from the downtown (5 minutes by taxi). Good breakfast but not well disposed/organized as it looks chaotic in specific spots (like coffee machine) and definitely to be improved.

A pleasant stay at this Hotel for 9 nights in a Grand Suite situated on the 12th (Top) floor facing the well known Bom Jesus do Monte. Located out of central Braga, this Modern Hotel has good facilities. The pool itself was well maintained, sun beds were not the best, but adequate. Often very busy during our stay, yet still you could find a space. Towels are provided for guests use. There is a decent gym with basic equipment close to the pool. Whilst the Hotel is in between two roads this didn’t affect our time at the pool. One road is much quieter than the other, so noise levels are not an issue. There are some cafes & restaurants close by, but an Uber into Braga is reasonable and easy to obtain. There you will find plenty of choice & at very reasonable prices. We only had Breakfast at the Hotel, & again whilst very busy on some days we were easily shown to a table. The buffet breakfast had a good range on offer. Now to the room- Spacious, amazing views, clean and more than an enough room for a family. The bathroom has a separate bath and large shower area. Comfortable beds with no noise disturbances from corridors etc Sadly, the thing lets the room down and really does need addressing is the Air Con that is pretty much non existent. This meant keeping the curtains shut during the day as with the sun on the large windows & no air con it was at times in unbearable. The WiFi too is terrible. In todays world that is something such a modern Hotel again needs to address. Aside from these two issues we had a good stay. Staff were helpful. It’s a nice Hotel, felt safe, and we would consider staying again.
