Photos do not do justice to the blue and white tiled buildings and beautifully cultivated grounds. Breakfast was a generous buffet served in a grotto and garden setting.
The staff always greeted us warmly. Josh was eager to offer suggestions and advice on sites to visit and to mark our path on their maps. In addition, he generously shared the interesting history of the castle when we inquired.
We did have rooms in the tower and found the restored rooms museum quality with thoroughly modern bathrooms, the only place where I could use a curling iron by a mirror.
The hotel is at the top of the hill, but we found that a relief from the crowds. The street itself became a busy pedestrian mall about halfway down. We did use a cab back one time from the river. For the four of us €10 covered the fare and tip.
We even enjoyed eating locally at a Cafe near the Metro where there was no menu and everyone knew what they wanted. It was a fun cultural experience and we returned.
Frankly, I don't know why anyone would want to stay anywhere else in Porto. If you never left the grounds, you would still be content.
The parking fee is 10 Euro per day, but your car is safely parked in front of the hotel. You don't really need the car in Porto, as the hotel is very close to a metro-line or you can simply walk to a lot of tourist attractions.
There are also a few restaurants in walking distance.
I would stay there again any time.
A little bit of a walk from some of the main tourist attractions but it’s very quiet, no traffic noise and only a 10minute walk to the main shopping street down Rua de Santa Catarina. There's a security gate and you need a code to enter, so very safe and you can also park your car there.
I had a garden room, which was new and modern, but you can also find older, traditional rooms in the main building.
The included breakfast, when we were there, was in a grotto that was normally the bar. That area and the outside seating on the grounds were surrounded by flowering plants and trees.
Yes, the Castelo is near the top of Santa Catarina Street, but it becomes a pedestrian only street as you descend. Often we would walk down and take a taxi back. The fares are quite reasonable.
Kudos, too, to the staff who, in fluent English, helped us with directions, suggestions for places to visit and eat, and arranging for a taxi when we departed for the train station. Again, I don't know why anyone would want to miss the opportunity to stay at Castelo de Santa Catarina.
We were given the jaw-droppingly beautiful room 133, on the 3rd floor of the castle, graced with our very own private terrace which was probably bigger than most people’s gardens! We would savour our morning coffee and tea whilst admiring the stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean, and downtown Porto, whilst reclining on the provided deck chairs. The sunsets were also breathtaking.
It’s about a 25 minute walk into town (downhill). We always walked home (uphill) which was sometimes a challenge but a good way to work off all the delicious food we ate!
Moreover, the guys at reception were so welcoming and professional. We felt immediately at home. Thank you to Nino especially who gave us all the best tourist info, and was always up for a friendly chat.
Breakfast was very well organised in these precarious times. Food was brought directly to the table and you could choose from a number of freshly made warm dishes. The omelettes (particularly) were divine!
We spoke to the owner/manager who helps out at every breakfast service, and it was clear how passionate he is about the castle. It really is so special.
Thank you to everyone for treating us so well. I really hope we can come back!
The welcome is excellent, the staff attentive and full of good advice for visits and restaurants in the surrounding area.
The breakfast is varied and plentiful and I particularly appreciated the little personal touch to mark my birthday!
I recommend this hotel without hesitation.
In addition to the wonderful rooms (castle building), every thing is so clean and well maintained.
The inclusive breakfast is of good quality and very varied between hot and cold savoury and sweet. Not a large amount of each type of food is put out at one time but the staff are constantly refreshing the catering area to maintain freshness and the area is so clean.
For me the other outstanding thing I have taken home with me is the staff helpfulness and friendliness not because they have to be but because they want to and you feel the genuineness. This is not only the reception staff but the catering and cleaning staff as well. It was our pleasure to go on our holiday at this hotel. Simply OUTSTANDING.
"It's a bit of a hike to get into the heart of Porto from here, but a very fine refuge from the bustle of the city at the end of the day."Read full review
