This hotel is an absolute gem. Had a fantastic week staying here at the beginning of June after a postponement of 2 years. Our rooms were clean and comfortable, the facilities were everything we needed and the location is just a 2 min walk from the beautiful Almiros beach and a 25 min walk to Agios Nikolaos. but the best thing about this hotel is the staff. Everyone is so friendly and helpful. Vasoliki, Dina, Maria and Michalis (apologies for the spelling!) in particular were so lovely. The owner Annette was just the best host-Informative and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. I would absolutely recommend staying here.

Such a welcoming, warm family run hotel. Beautiful crystal clear river fed pool. Friendly bar and wonderful restaurant.
Each morning I would follow the stone path that led to a carefully thought out platform by the river to practice yoga. Mats supplied by hotel. Listening to the wild birds on the river and the sound of running water was just beautiful.
I cannot wait to return.
P.s My room had the most comfortable bed and pillows on crisp white sheets and hot, hot shower. With a spacious balcony. Perfect.

So pleased to have been able to return after Covid cancellations to find my favourite place better than ever. A small privately run hotel in a fantastic location close to beautiful beaches and the town centre. It is kept extremely clean with the most comfortable of beds, nice swimming pool and lovely on site restaurant and bar for when you don't fancy a night in town. That said for me it is the staff that make this a stand out place to stay, I use the word staff in it literal term but they are more of a family who make their guest feel part of it. I was welcomed with a smiling face at 2am after a long delay arriving and felt immediately at home. I will not mention individual names as I wouldn't want to miss anyone out, they all know who they are and everyone of them plays their part to the utmost thank you all so much for a wonderful holiday see you all again soon.

Although placed in a very quiet location, which provides a good night's sleep, the curtains are useless. The light comes through as soon as the sun is rising and it will wake you up (unless you are a good, heavy sleeper, of course - or you are used to it). Paint smell was very strong, room was okay, mattress comfortable, bathroom had been refurbished in a very pretty way (although I don't know how a bigger person might fit in the area where the toilet seat was placed). Breakfast was disappointing but they have a lovely bar area. None of the other guests wore a face mask when retrieving their breakfast. Parking is lacking. No shampoo available... just hand soap.

There are many things which were wrong, firstly the customer service here is shocking i wouldnt expect it in crete. annette who works there is a conwoman and doesnt care about the customers feelings at all. she even said to me she will destroy me if i leave a bad review lovely way to talk to your customers. The so called "villa" in istro should be avoided at all costs it was filthy and infested in mosquitos which i was told i was just there at the wrong time i paid for 2 months and didnt even get my money back as promised by the boss instead the day i was leaving i was told id get just 300 back clearly didnt mention that before but left it for the day i was leaving! i found the staff very unfriendly they sit around smoking all day and would pull faces if my daughter so much as said squeak or petted the dogs they have there. the cleaner only changes your bin bag. the food is average but everyday the same nothing traditional like they say! The shower water was cold everyday. The mosquitos eat you alive in this place. not impressed and i would not recommend it.

We stayed for eight days .bed comfortable.cold water in the shower first four days with water leaking out of the bathroom door from it not ideal.Breakfast very basic .we had evening meal included !
Not told what the evening meal would be just got it given ie cold lamb bones leftovers from lunch bbq.rabbit , risotto with unknown content ie fat bits .suggest request menu and do not eat included evening meal unless on very tight budget .wine very expensive too ,
Not overly friendly for a Greek experience.
Would not return .

DONT GO!

The bar area was lovely and relaxing, and a lovely atmosphere made only by the guests. Michalis, the barman is friendly and helpfull. The choice of drinks included in the all inclusive is very poor. Guests complained about the wine but nothing was done. We aren't really drinkers so stuck to coke,lager/shandy.
Water is to be paid for unless it's from the bar tap!

The Pool was dirty and shabby, hardly anyone was using it. On one occasion the electric robot cleaner was in the pool from 8-4. Which meant it was out of use most of the day. A guest swam with it in the pool which is madness. A clean of the leaves with a net every couple of hours would probably help to encourage guests to use it, but i can assure u this never happened. George and his sons sat looking at the pool rather than grab a net. There is a beautiful public pool situated next door to the hotel, which was spotless and we used daily and a lovely beach within a few yds. I never saw a child's pool whilst staying here.

Our room was very small and very basic. We arrived late/ early hours of the morning and not even a bottle of water in the room. The showers are cold and only warm at around 7 pm for about an hour. The water pressure is rather poor upstairs. The rooms get hot, and air con 5 euros a day extra.
Balcony very small.

The Food is served as a buffet... Dreadful. Couldn't decide what it was most days. Food in the trays was Luke warm which makes them less appetising, and always just water melon for desert. The snack menu was never around to be seen.
There are no ice creams, sweets, crisps or nuts. Not even to purchase.
A small gesture of a few crisps or nuts (which u get in every other bar)with a drink go a long way in my book. We ate at the local pool most days. Food is fantastic and service great.
The snacks come out when their visitors arrive but not for paying guests.

This hotel is not family run. Annette & George are not a couple.
The hotels replies to reviews are always" if u had told us" but nobody wants to make things difficult on a holiday for themselves by complaining.
It seems Annette and George have learnt nothing by reading the reviews.
Making small cheap kind gestures and changes make a big difference to your guests.
Not a place for families.
I WOULD NOT RETURN HERE.

We stayed at the Almyros River Hotel in September 06. The accommodation is very typical basic Greek accommodation, which was clean and had all amenities we required – TV, hairdryer, fridge (no kettle). We stayed on a bed and breakfast basis – the breakfast was made up of fresh bread, cheese, ham and jams which was all I needed in the morning but can become a bit repetitive after a while as there is no change with what’s on offer.

The accommodation is only a 3-5 minute walk to the wonderful beach of Almyros, which is the only natural beach in the area – the other beaches in Agios Nikolaos are man made. The beach is a beautiful long, deep sandy beach with gently shelving waters. There are sun loungers and umbrellas to rent (7.5 euros for 2 sun beds and umbrella) as well as water sports on offer.

Apart from the beach there isnt very much on offer near the hotel. Agios Nikolaso is a 1-1.5km walk – along the beach and costal promenade – it is worth noting that this area is not well lit so a torch would be of use. The hotel has a taverna attached to it which seemed popular with some of the residents at the hotel – we never ate there but on speaking to others they said that the food was very nice.

Every evening we would walk into Agios Nikolas which took us about 20-30 minutes. Agios Nikolaos has a lot to offer with numerous restaurants and bars. The area around the lake (the bottomless lake) is very popular but as would be expected prices for drinks and food are more expensive. The pace in Agios Nikolaos is relaxed and calm – there are a couple of clubs which are frequented by the Greeks of weekends other than that evenings are spent enjoying Greek food and drinks.

On our stay in Crete we took the trip to the island of Spinalonga (the old leper colony) which was very interesting. A wonderful place to visit with a wealth of history – if you’re interested in the Island you will love the book “The Island” by Victoria Hislop all about Crete, its history and Spinalonga.

All in all we had a very relaxing holiday. The accommodation we had was fine but not of a wonderful standard. In the week we were there we only had our rooms cleaned once. If you are looking for a hotel which offers lots of extras then this isnt the place for you, however if you want a cheap break (like us) and are aware that the accommodation is simple then you wont find any problems with the Almyros River Hotel.

It is worth mentioning that the hotel is a great base for beach lovers but if you have a family, or are travelling on your own you may feel a little isolated – there isnt a supermarket nearby – you have to go into Agios Nik for your provisions and the walk into Agios Nik is fairly long and as mentioned above not well lit. In saying that taxis aren’t expensive (6euros into Ag Nik) and there is a bus stop outside the hotel.

September 2014 - My wife and I have just returned from a fantastic week at the Almyros River Hotel.
As like many of the other reviews, this quaint Cretan family run hotel is exceptionally welcoming and a true reflection of the Cretan ethos of hospitality.
Our hosts, Annette and George, immediately make you feel wanted and welcome.
I arrived in the early hours of the morning and was immediately invited to join our hosts and fellow guests for a nightcap in the bar.
The hotel is situated minutes from the best beach on the Northern coast of Crete, and a very pleasant 20 minute walk, along this beach, to the centre of Aghios Nicholas.
The beach is superb, fine yellow sand with a very gentle slope into the crystal clear sea. Ideal for children or any person with impaired mobility. There is even access to a water-flotation wheel chair, on the beach, to enable the most challenged person entry into the water.
The beach has public toilets and showers with two sunbeds and umbrella costing between 5 to 7 Euros daily. There is a beach bar available although you are so close to the hotel it is easy to pop back for food and drink at the hotel, taking advantage of your all inclusive deal.
If the beach is not your thing then, immediately next door to the hotel is a massive infinity type pool and beach bar which guests can use for the price of a coffee The sunbeds and umbrellas are free.
The hotel is beautifully small and charming. Every room, bar restaurant and pool is spotlessly clean. Annette and George have taken much care in the design and decoration of each room and their pride and love shines through.
The food at the hotel is fantastic and plentiful, all cooked by the chef, Mohamed.
There is no such thing as a problem at this hotel, because if you have a concern, Annette will sort it immediately.
Annette and George are your own personal Cretan Trip Advisors, they advised me of secluded beaches, off the track tavernas and road trips. All of which were fantastic and exactly as they stated.
Ask Annette about “mama mia” hidden gems and you’ll end up in the most fantastic sea view taverns and restaurants.
If you want to hire a car ask Annette. 2 days hire is 80 Euros but Annette got me an extra day free!
If you want a ‘negative point’ – George insists the Cretan way to chat is with his free homemade raki and will fill and refill your glass till you feel Cretan. A truly hospitable culture.
I cannot wait to return and spend another holiday in the warmth of the Cretan sun and the hospitality of George and Annette.
So glad I picked this hotel. Ideal location and perfect holiday.
