Detailed Reviews
Very well located 2 star hotel near the harbor and seaside promenade and everything is walking distance from the hotel. Lots of restaurants and grocery stores nearby. We had no issues with the wifi too. It is a family run property where the owner takes pride in maintaining his property well. Ours was a basic room, but neat and clean and pretty much that was good enough for us. We asked for a kettle in the room and were provided with one. The owner is there most of the time in the front desk and will help you with any questions or queries about sight seeing. The hotel itself does not offer breakfast but you can pay the hotel 10 euros per person and have breakfast at Kriti Hotel nearby. Pretty good and decent spread. I had breakfast twice but did not have the time to have it daily. Pretty much the same spread daily, but I was happy with the good options on the buffet breakfast. Free fruits are kept at the front desk if you want - wish they had more of peaches there :) The owner also greets you on arrival and offers bread, olive oil and olives of the region, raki and some specialty fish of the region(if you eat meat), as a welcome to his hotel, which is a nice touch.
The one negative about the place and Chania in general, is the lack of parking. The hotel has no parking and you are dependent on street parking and parking lot near the hotel. The issue is that the big free parking lot near the hotel is always full and very hard to get street parking too. This happens especially during peak tourist season and also if you go on a day trip and come back a little late after 7pm. Because of the proximity to the harbor restaurants and seaside promenade, everyone comes there for dinner and it is a nightmare to get parking. One day it took us half an hour of frustrated driving and getting caught in one way streets before the owner graciously removed his scooter and allowed us to park our car there. Otherwise even 5-10 streets away, it is impossible to get parking, unless you are lucky. One day my husband just decided to chill in the hotel and I used the public transport to go to Rethymno, because we were worried of the parking nightmare if we took the car. There is paid parking lot nearby too and that would have been our alternative, if we had stayed longer days. But this is the situation all over and near old town Chania, narrow roads and no parking available in most of the hotels. The owner tries his best to help you so cannot blame the hotel in anyway about this situation.

Hotel Filoxenia is a simple and welcoming place with a friendly atmosphere. Mr Nikos is a kind and very helpful host who is always smiling, asking how you are and he gives you the best tips for everything you want to do in Chania and surrounding areas. The rooms are always clean, the bed is comfortable, there is a fridge, tv, hair dryer and iron provided if needed. Also, the balcony is quite nice to spend the evenings. Everything is close - nice cafes by the door, the old harbour is just a few minutes away (walking distance), many shops, incredible restaurants and yet, the hotel is in a perfect spot to have a quiet night of sleep without all the noise from the bars. Theres a beautiful beach spot in front of the hotel as well, we loved to spend some afternoons there. Theres a lady who is also lovely and smiley that I wont forget, like Mr Nikos. Only good experiences in this hotel.

Nikos was a great host, he extended himself to make everything easy for us, I would be very happy to stay here again. For us, the hotel was simply a base to keep our things and sleep at night - and it was completely adequate in this regard. But for travelers who want different kinds of entertainment and facilities at the hotel, then they would need to spend a lot more and go somewhere else ;)

a small renovated family hotel. The room is big + with a balcony where one can smoke.
The hosts are very kind and helpful.
excellent location within walking distance to the old city.
The only complain is that the hotel is too expensive. We paid 326.88 € for 3 nights additional 9€ per person for breakfast. You can eat nearby for 6 -7 €.
a small bathroom ' no conditional, no body lotion , no tissue. no safe but the it is a safe hotel

Small simple hotel, very convenient to walk to the port, beach or city streets
The rooms are comfortable (small fridge, good bedding, tv) with a small shower room (good water pressure) and efficient air conditioning. The hotel is clean with elevator, convenient for luggage. The owner is kind and always ready to help so the stay goes smoothly. We had breakfast in a nearby hotel, with which the Filoxenia has an agreement (10€/pers.... excellent). Possibility to park on a very large free parking at the end of the street. We will return without hesitation and recommend

After a great stay in Rethymno, we moved to Chania; the Filoxenia hotel is in a fantastic location, just outside the chaos of the Venetian port and the old town but reachable in a few minutes, but still has many bars and restaurants in the street in front so you do not have to move x dinner if you do not feel like it.
The hotel is quite new, nice, the room comfortable nothing much, but what I want to emphasize and that is the real must have of the place is the superb kindness and helpfulness of the Owner, a lovely and very kind person ready to solve everything.
Every night he helped us with the parking of the car, sometimes he made us leave it in front of a driveway step in front and then agreeing with the owners x move the car in case a parking lot was free; one evening my 3-year-old daughter started crying because she wanted a banana (since every time we passed he made her find one), but he poor man had not..... she was crushed hard because we had been to Elafonissi, field day, it was certainly a whim so much that I had told him not to worry. Well, he went out on a scooter at 9 p.m. x go find bananas x her! Here we are beyond kindness...... a very special person who I want to thank enormously.
Breakfast was agreed with a hotel in front and then you go to do there, there are those classic international buffets with every desire imaginable....... there is a large parking lot right in front, but in my case it was virtually impossible to find a place and even access so much was the line, without him I would not really know how to do it!
THANK YOU for everything, you are amazing people.

The best reception ever, we signed up for the reception (2 hours before checking time) then we were offered delicious tapas with "raki" the local liqueur. The people were so welcoming! A great room close to a swimming beach and around the corner from the center. Highly recommended!

We stayed 2 nights and it was ok for what we needed it for. It is located fairly close to the main tourist attractions (port, museums, shopping) and you can see the water from the balcony as it is only a block away. It was relaxing to hear the sound of the waves from the hotel room.
However, we did book the budget room originally, but when we got there we were told it wasn't ready and that we could have a room upstairs that was ready, for an extra 7 euros/night, or wait. As we were there very early for check in, and the "budget room" did not look very appealing, we didn't mind paying extra to get a better room right away. So be aware that the budget room is misleading.
Another downside to the hotel was that it smelled like smoke, and we found ashes in the drawer beside the bed... the room seemed fairly clean otherwise.

My third visit was a total disaster as the proprietor acted in the unfriendliest and most mean-spirited way possible simply because I had a cousin pop in for a quick shower before dinner as we'd been at the beach together.
I tried to reason with the gentleman but all he cared about was the fact we used extra water for the third person to shower.
If I hadn't already paid for my two nights in advance I would have left on the spot. Huge shame as I've previously loved the location and simple yet user friendly rooms.
My cousin was rope-able and paid him €5 for his water.
Keep away. All they want is your money while sitting behind their desk smoking and drinking coffee. They didn't help with cases or anything else when we arrived and they certainly had no intention of helping at the end.

Response from Hotel-Filoxenia, Owner at Hotel Filoxenia
Responded 30 Aug 2014
Dear Sir, It is true that I have this hotel and I want money from my customers and I try the best for them and their staying to the hotel and the city of Chania. Sorry but if you want your cousins, brother, friends or others that are not registered in the hotel please book somewhere else (I recommend "Rooms to let" to skip more trouble) especially if you don't know how the hotels work and you think you can break some laws without even asking. I didn't ask for the 5 euros you thrown it to me trying to cause troubles. You wrote what you had to say... I wish you to enjoy the rest of your holidays and I will continue to enjoy my coffee and cigarette to the lobby and serving my guests with the best way I can. Regard Christos The hotel owner

We booked a budget double room for 3 nights - approx 40 Euros a night.
When we arrived around lunchtime, the budget double room turned out to be an occupied room with its door wide open on the ground floor right next to the tiny check-in desk and noisey smokey lounge bar tv room. Whilst we were checking in the manager pointed to this room - he said the room was currently occupied and will be cleaned. It turned out that the occupiers were in fact the hotels friends or relatives who we saw at the tv lounge area every day.
We asked for a budget room upstairs - as we did not want this room. The manager told us to come back in an hour whilst he would try and reconfigure his bookings. When we returned the manager allocated us to a double room upstairs and gave us the impression he was doing us a real favour for moving us to another room. However, he then insisted we paid 35 euros extra + pay for the whole stay upfront despite the booking stating we pay on checkout. We reluctantly paid upfront with the extra 35 Euros as we had limited time in Crete.
Room upstairs was fine but we felt conned by a series of lies and deception to get a decent room.
Over the 3 days of our stay the hotel was more or less empty - only a few other guests were staying there + hotels friends / relatives.
The only real positive about the stay is the location. The hotel is beside the beach / citadel wall where you can swim and have breakfast with locals. But - pricey food drink for Greece.
Beware of the budget room con if you stay here.
