Detailed Reviews
Spend 6 nights in the camp renting a medium sized caravan. The caravan itself was comfortable enough for one person. The bed had a thick and comfortable mattress, there was an inside faucet where you could do some basic washing, a small outside fridge that was working well and kept my beers cold and in the outside area a table with four plastic chairs. There are some mosquitos during the night so its a good idea to get a supply of spirals to light when you are sitting outside. Oh, if you are planning to sleep inside the caravan during the day, then you certainly need to turn on the airconditioning unit (extra charge) because it gets too hot.
The common showers and toilets are clean during the day when the cleaning service is around, but by late afternoon and night it gets quite dirty.
The restaurant is really good with good food at very reasonable prices that you will not find in outside restaurants. Service is a bit slow and laid back, but don't forget you are in a camping ground.
The beach is awesome and when I visited in July the water was very warm. It is mainly a pebble beach but there is also areas with sand. The caravan comes with a beach ombrella and a couple of sunbeds that you can use when you are at the beach.
Overall, even though there is ground for improvement, especially in the cleaning of public areas, it was an excellent choice. Certainly recommended and hopefully I will be back one day.

Apparently the oldest camping of Rethymno, the vibe of this place is to provide anything in the range of basic to excellent accomodation to all visitors.
I personally had the opportunity to learn insight info about hiking the gorges in the area aw well aw furtber south as well.
If you want a no stress place, this is certainly your pick.

Where to start....
We did not stay here, but we had a wedding party. All the staff are friendly and helpful.
The camping area is absolutely gorgeous, soo relaxing.
The taverna is right on the beach. What a gorgeous place, we had about 20 guests, and they set all the tables together for us. Mum and dad's wedding party was everything they could of asked for, we had music, great food, and met some great people. How amazing is that you can sit down have your food and then go for a swim on the beach, which is absolutely gorgeous. If we would of know how beautiful the camping area is, we definitely would of stayed there.
Thank you to all staff for being soo welcoming, and providing us with everything we needed.
Definitely recommend this place.

Camping part I can't judge, but seems wonderfully back to basic: i.i.g. different types of accommodation
Catering part is fine. The casual atmosphere and the surroundings make it relaxed and nice and crunchy. Lovely place!!

Second time I've stayed here for 5 weeks (as an archelon turtle volunteer). Spacious camping plots with plenty of bamboo shade. Free filtered cold drinking water, decent loo's and shower block (with hot water), stone sinks for hand-washing and a machine if you want it (ask at taverna), large communal fridge in kitchen for you to store your own food and do your washing up. Electricity points in the loos, by reception, in taverna etc for charging phones and cameras. Lovely taverna right on the beach where you're welcome to sit and chill without having to buy anything but the food is always good, home-made and local with a different menu everyday and a fab bbq on thursdays. I think its a bit dear compared to what you can eat in town but its certainly cheap compared to english prices and is very good quality - perfect for when you've had a long day walking and can't be bothered leaving camp! Hook ups for caravans and advanced camper facilities eg wc chem disposal.
Buses into Rethymno are about a 7 minute walk away and are every half hour in summer (every hour out of season). Wally, Christopher and Elizabeth are very knowledgeable about the area and lots of tourist nfo maps, car hire and excursions are bookable without you having to go into town. You can walk into rethymno town along the beach or the beach road and it takes about 45mins-1 hour. The main bus station is quite a hike (or bus ride) away but you can pick up buses to just about anywhere in the prefecture for less than 3 euros (much cheaper than a 15 or 30 euro tour bus!). Main market is by the municipal gardens on a thursday. Theres several small supermarkets near to the camp and a Bank of Chania with ATM, bakeries, butchers, everything you need. Zizi's restaurant is close to camp and food is amazing (and cheap). Do eat in town though, all of the food is good and don't be put off by pictures outside all the restaurants as its the cretan way to show you their food - if they could they would bring you into their kitchen ... and they are very concerned if you leave anything!
The beach is wide and sandy and as your away from the bustle of the promenade hotels there are no sun beds and you can really be free to enjoy the beach and sea away from other tourists. A 5 minute walk down the beach brings you to a swimming pool with sun loungers, cafe/taverna, nice for a change from the beach.
Archelon sea-turtle volunteers are based on the camp - if you want to know more about the turtles that nest all along the 11km beach, just ask! You could even join them on a morning survey to find out more about the monitoring and protection work with the sea-turtles (may-july is nesting season, august, septemebr is hatchlings :) - please stay off the beach at night as it disturbs turtle activity - go early morning when its light around 6am if you want to see hatchlings without risking their lives and please please don't touch them - they MUST walk to the sea to gain strength to swim!)
Any questions, feel free to ask me, I've spent a 2 briliant summers here and will go back again for sure :)
There are bungalow rooms (just beds and storage, no cooking facilities) available to rent and some caravans, all with air con - basic but ok if you don't want to bring a tent but still enjoy being outdoors and on campsite.

The site is ok but is really set up for tents, glamping and bungalows
We arrived and were told find a spot which we did but could not see where to plug in motorhome so hubby decided we would drive on. The lady then showed us where electricity was which helped.
There is a private part of camp for volunteers helping to preserve turtle population
There was lots of other youngsters in tents on our two night stay so trying to get into showers was difficult and they left quite a mess I sympathise with the cleaners
The site is right in the ocean so that is perfect if you want beach and you have free use of sun beds
There is also a small taverna which looked nice
The best thing for us was being able to leave the van parked and get a bus into the town cheap too only 2.20 return each person and very frequent
Also the site is 5 minute walk to good supermarkets selling nice Cretian food

The Royal Town of Sutton Coldfield, United Kingdom56 contributions4 helpful votesHello .. I am getting the bus from Chania to stay ... how far away from the camp is the bus stop? I am travelling solo and never been before so all help is really appreciated
As a young Ulysses having nostalgia for his beloved land (that's you), I tell you as the owner of Camping Elizabeth that Camping Arcadia closed in the early 1990s as a result of being bought by the neighbouring and beautiful Hotel "Creta Palace". As a 32 year old, I faintly remember when it was open. The owner's family owns a gas station nearby and the owner himself is in the UK now, and we do have contact with him.
I wish you well and maybe see you in the future.
