Quick summary: very clean, quiet, well-maintained rooms and common areas. Excellent on-site staff - professional, friendly, and very helpful. Location is great in an attractive residential area near tram and bus stops, and many shops and cafes. Quick trip into central part of town. Very good buffet breakfast. Private rooms with shared bathrooms are spread out between two buildings. The property now also has a few rooms with private baths and an apartment. I base my review of what I expect of a well-run hostel, not a luxury hotel, but the staff could not be better at a 5-star place. Note: I am not the usual hostel visitor, so please know that this is a very nice, quiet, clean, comfortable place. If I can be comfortable here, you can be comfortable here. We returned here with a group of college students after a few years' absence from COVID restrictions. In the interim, the owners made the place even better with a few upgrades and renovations. The rooms are varied in their size and number of beds, with mostly 2-4 beds in a room. No huge rooms with people you don't know. Each room has many useful amenities. From my past experiences, each room has: Clean, fresh, comfortable beds, pillows, duvets with nice bed linens Excellent individual bedside lights -- THANK YOU!! (I can't tell you how many 5-star hotels I've been to that have lousy bedside lighting.) Good towels for small surcharge Open-side closet with sturdy hangers, some shelving, and a small toiletry shelf Full-length mirror Desk (with three small drawers) , chair, good desk lamp Lots of wall hooks for coats, robes, etc. TV with a few stations, both in Swedish and other languages, primarily English, with Swedish subtitles Blackout curtains work well Umbrella to borrow (or buy for an attractive souvenir) As mentioned, the owners have been hard at work with renovations and added amenities in some rooms since last we visited. I think my room, #527, is now positioned as a more deluxe room than standard. Compared with past visits, this room has: NEW - mini refrigerator and microwave Hair dryer The bathrooms have cubicles for toilet and shower that can be locked. There are additional sinks in communal areas. Additional toilets are here and there around the properties. Other public rooms include a well-appointed kitchen in each of the two main buildings, including multiple refrigerators; comfortable lounges; good breakfast area with an outside terrace in nice weather. Excellent housekeeping throughout. They've freshened the decor since we first came here many years ago with creative touches in the hallways and artwork that evoke northern woods with birch trees. Okay, I also love the cluster of midcentury lighting fixtures in the lobby area of the annex building. Both buildings have a nice rack of travel brochures. This is an excellent neighborhood for visiting Goteborg. The trams (nearest: Olivedalsgatan), bus lines, grocery stores, restaurants, cafes, shops, etc. are a short walk away, and the downtown city center is a short ride away. The neighborhood is very attractive - you wouldn't mind living here on a regular basis. The restaurants and cafes on nearby Linnegatan are set up to have many outdoor tables in nice weather. Very good cold buffet breakfast for a nominal charge. A variety of breads, meats, cheeses, hard-boiled eggs, fish (sometimes), vegetables, pickles, yogurts, jams, cereals, juices, teas, and coffees. They have every variety of milk, it seems - cow, soy, oat. There is a laundry room for a nominal charge, and a sauna that is scheduled around "men only," women only", and "both" on a schedule. Staff throughout is very friendly, helpful, and professional. We relied on them to make some local contacts, info, and travel arrangements and calls for us. As it seems in much of Sweden, English is well understood. They know the city well, so take their advice and make use of their knowledge. While I hate to promise for them, the staff has organized socializing events for the guests -- walking tours, going to a nearby karaoke bar, etc. So - if we can have this much comfort and fun in the middle of January, you can image how much we'd like to return in better weather! We look forward to a return visit.

I spent two nights at this hostel, while exploring Göteborgs Kulturkalas. The staff at the hostel were lovely. I had a nice, bright and clean room. Slept very well. Nice mattress and bedlinen and the curtains shut out all street light. Enjoyed the plentiful breakfast. Visited the sauna too, which was lovely. Did not use the common room, but seems like a lot of people did. The location was great. Quiet street and close to a busstop, cafés, a church and the big park Slottskogen, a supermarket and a pharmacy. It was easy going to the city centre with the Västtrafik busses (I downloaded the Västtrafik app to get tickets). There were also rental scooters from Voi outside, which can also be used through a Voi app. There are other scooter brands and apps.

Hi. The only difference on the breakfast cards and the time the breakfast is actually open is that we are open 30min longer on weekends. Did you tell the reception about the pillow during your stay so we could give you a new one? They should of course always be clean. Sorry to hear about the toilet and the sauna, we clean them both at least once a day so they should of course be clean. Kind Regards, David, Slottsskogens Vandrarhem

Super easy stay! I was backpacking around Sweden and Denmark with 2 friends and we stayed one night here in Gothenburg. We had a whole room (4 beds) to the 3 of us so there was plenty of space and even had a TV in the room to watch some Swedish TV. I'm specifically writing this review to say thanks to the super helpful hostel staff who shipped me my apple watch that I forgot in the room overseas to Chicago. I was worried that I'd never get it back because you know how things can go when you're backpacking around hostels but the staff was honest, nice and helpful in sending it back to me! Specifically, Linda, who I was exchanging info over email with trying to get the watch back. I couldn't be more grateful and satisfied with my stay here, 5/5 stars. Felt like it was easy to get all over the city from there and there was even a park a short walk away that had a really cool free-to-enter zoo inside that had a bunch of animals native to the area. Thank you so much to the people who work here, again!

I found this review difficult as some things were excellent but some things were not. I ended up giving just an average score overall relative to the price. The staff and some bathroom facilities were excellent! I want to make sure staff are congratulated as they were great. The location was good and kitchen ok. Beds were ok and storage in rooms very good. Communal areas nice and security good. Unfortunately there were things that were mediocre or below. My room had windows facing the recycling bins so was often woken up by people depositing bottles etc. The bathrooms closest to my room were not great. They didn’t have any hooks so had no where to hang things when having a shower and were quite smelly. Fridges were also smelly. The smelliness influenced my overall score.

Hi. Thank you for the great words about our staff, that always makes us glad to hear and that's what we are here for! Also great to hear that you liked the room and the kitchen. We really are in a great area with a lot of things to do. Sorry that the nearest bathrooms wasn't as good as the other ones. Even if the recycling bins made some noice we hope that you got a good nights sleep anyway. Kind Regards, David, Slottsskogens Hostel.

I booked online and paid in the counter at night. As I went to Sweden with three more friends, we booked a four people room without washroom. There were two double beds in the room. It provided a socket for each bed, so, you could charge your phone on bed. But, there was a little bit bad smell in the room. We needes to open the window to get some fresh air from outside. The kitchen was nice. We could cook our meal with lots of utensils there.

Quick summary: clean, quiet rooms in a good neighborhood with groceries, shops, cafes. On-site breakfast (extra charge) is very good. Very near tram and bus lines. Good complimentary wifi. On-site laundry, kitchens, lounges, sauna. Variety of rooms, so ask about your preferences. Key card access to your room and outer doors, i.e. no one wandering in. Very helpful, friendly, professional staff. Disclaimer: This review is based on what I expect of a hostel, which says a lot about the quality here since I am not really a hostel traveler. If I can be comfortable in this hostel, you should be comfortable in this hostel. I was in room #508 by myself, which has two beds; a mattress pad and comforter on each;an open closet with 4 hangers, hairdryer, desk with a small drawer, two desk chairs, luggage rack; fan; and windows that open. This room overlooks a quiet residential street with some restaurants, cafes, small grocery, etc. The bed and pillows were comfortable, as was the room temperature (but it is nice to have these windows that open in any season.) The large windows also provide a nice amount of light, appreciated in winter. A good reading light is over each bed, in addition to the overhead room lights. Complimentary wifi works well. TV's have about 16 channels in Swedish and English, most with captions in the other language. Sheets, bath towels, and breakfast come with nominal charges. Personally, I travel with an extra hand towel in a Ziploc bag when I come here so that I am not always using my bath towel for quick washups. Those who need a washcloth should plan accordingly. Clean WC and showers - lock for privacy - throughout the buildings. Breakfast is a fairly large cold buffet of excellent breads and rolls, meats, cheeses, fish, hard and soft boiled eggs, cereals (and toppings,) butter and jams, (dairy and oat), yogurts, mixed fruits, juices, coffee and tea. Also to note: you can put together an excellent sandwich for a later picnic for about 15 SEK - a real deal!!! They will wrap it for you. There is also a pool table in the breakfast room. Nice lounges are scattered throughout the two buildings - -couches, tables, games, toys, books, etc. throughout the lounges, kitchen, hallway. There is a kitchen in each of the two buildings, with tables, room to cook (stoves, microwave, etc.) Well-fitted equipment: pots, pans, glasses, cups, tableware, tea maker, toaster, etc. There are two refrigerators in each, that get full depending on how many people are staying who need a lot of grocery space (or not.) Our kitchen had room in the fridges for a variety of things; one fridge in the other building was packed. Stuff to clean up after yourself in the kitchen is provided, i.e. dish soap, washing tools and cloths, etc. If any guests have a problem with unclean dishes or fridges, it is a matter of the people staying there, not the staff. Even when we are staying when the hostel seems pretty full, the staff keeps up with cleaning, when the bins get full, etc. To note: some shelves on the fridge door indicate "free for all." Watch where you put your stuff if you don't want to share. The location is excellent. You are in a nice residential neighborhood with a number and variety of cafes, restaurants, small groceries, shops, pharmacy, resale shops, etc. It is about two blocks from the Olivedalgatan tram stop, which has a number of lines. Bus stops are also nearby. Very good security - key card access for your room and for the outside doors. No lockers that I know of, but I usually travel with luggage locks, I have not heard about any problems, and I typically travel with a group while I am here (see below) and would have heard about any problems. The staff is excellent. The folks at the desk are very knowledgeable, professional, and friendly. They address any problems promptly. Take advantage of their expertise for travel advice and guidance. The rest of the staff is also helpful, professional, and friendly (many cheers for the people at the breakfast area!!) Oh, yes - there are LOTS of travel brochures in the lobby areas of both buildings. We come most years with 18 or so college students (all carefully screened - we insist on good behavior) and 3 adults, so we have a variety of experiences and impressions. We typically get the rooms in the annex building that are two beds in a room with a window, across the street from the main building with the office and breakfast room. There are also rooms with 4-beds with bunk beds, and interior rooms with no windows. Personally, I'd stick with the rooms with a window, but ask in any case. If you like to open windows, I'd also recommend that you avoid the few rooms that might be over the outdoor smoking areas. This hostel attracts a variety of people and ages, and all seem like decent folks, i.e. no rough stuff, no screamers, etc. when we stay in January On our stays, we have seen everyone from a small travelling ballet troupe, to middle or older aged ladies and couples enjoying Goteborg, to a variety of people here for the film festival, to young people traveling, to workmen here for a temporary job, to a man we met who had just sold his condo before his relocation to a different country. Again, we try to make sure that our students have the maturity to be good guests, so don't think of this place as just a "student place." To sum: I'd be happy to stay here again, and introduce our students to Goteborg through this excellent hostel experience.

The hostel was much cleaner than other hostels I’ve stayed in before and the available guest kitchen and bathrooms were much better than I had been expecting. It got a little noisy on occasion, but honestly that was just other guests being a bit inconsiderate rather than any fault in the hostel. The security doors have keycard entry which I found really comforting as a solo traveller; I felt very relaxed and safe staying here. I was really pleased to discover they’re an eco-friendly hostel - I hadn’t noticed this when I’d booked. Really easy to recycle and to reduce waste while travelling which was a huge plus for me. Excellent location - cannot emphasise this enough. Takes about 10mins on the tram to get to the centre, but honestly I walked everywhere anyway. There’s a supermarket a couple of minutes walk away and it’s right next to Slottsskogen Park which you can go through to get to the botanical gardens and the nature reserve (Änggårdsbergen). I was easily in all 3 of these every day of my stay. I found all the staff I met to be really friendly and laid back. Such a good experience and I will be coming back to stay here again!

The night staff was not friendly at all. I stayed in the 4-bed room, which states there is no window. Despite that, I was expecting the room was going to have proper ventilation, but no, there is no window and no ventilation, which means the bedroom is super smelly and hot. The room has no lockers. The beds are wall to wall and quite narrow, not suitable for tall people at all.
