Holiday accommodation since the 19th century Casino Island boasts a long history of spa accommodation with the first spa being completed in 1896. It was named the St. Olav's Spa in honour of the patron saint of Olavinlinna Castle, the devout St. Olav, King of Norway. It was the first spa ever built in Finland. Restaurant Wanha Kasino next to it saw the light of day two years later in 1898. At the turn of the century, the Casino Island was busy with international tourists. Wealthy visitors arrived in hordes in summer from cities as far away as St. Petersburg. Visitors stayed in the villas built on Casino island and other nearby islands or in the homes of the townspeople in Savonlinna. Visitors went to the spa for cures. In spa brochures, the islands were called the Happy Islands as entertainment and socializing played an important part of spa life. Common treatments of the era were clay wraps and formic acid baths! The room was nice and clean. Comfortable bed and good pillows. Bathroom in need of renovation. Didn’t want to take a shower because of the condition. The food at the breakfast buffet was not properly heated. The staff was friendly.

Having read some of the previous reviews, we were prepared to keep our expectations real. Yes the entrance is not conventional and the hotel itself was a bit dated but we were pleasantly surprised by the warm reception and polite staff at the front desk, the good sized room with a balcony and view, the modern cafe/ bar with the most attentive staff and most importantly, the location. Use of the spa was an extra 10 euros pp but we didn’t have the time to visit. The hotel is separated from the city centre by a footbridge, about 5 mins walk away. Behind the hotel car park though was the surprise find - picturesque woods set on a lake where we spent a lot of time walking and enjoying the beautiful sunset. There is a cafe that belongs to the hotel in the woods where we’d have love to drink some tea in the romantic setting but we came by it late in the evening by which point it was closed. Overall we thought the hotel was very good value for money.…

We stayed here almost one week last summer. It's a scenic place and located in the city, still in a calm island! In Savonlinna you don't need a car anyway. The building is decades old and it can be seen in corridoors etc. but for example every room are renovated to this modern day. If you're looking something brilliant, this is not your place. But if you're looking a good and peaceful place for a family staying, check this! We did a couple of workouts in a gym (80-90's look a like) and enjoyed spa almost every evening. A lake outside was a nice wake up before breakfast. We ate almost every meal in a hotel so we experienced breakfast, lunch, dinner and evening snack. The last one was poorest and warm meals varied from not so special to excellent. Note that you can eat outside, also!…

Not very expensive so you cannot wait too much. Kids liked the spa i liked the gym with david equipment. Everyone liked The air conditionner. This IS good place on the hottest months. Breakfast a bit crowded and below average Maybe.

If you want and expensive trip back to 1970´s with a somebodyeleses body odour, this is your kinda stay! I left behind my running shorts and was billed 20€ for sending them to a address in Finland. This after numerous calls an e-mails.

Hotel has lost it's due date decades ago. It's Spa and there was outside pool out of use and I heard from personnel that it has been broken already 6 month. In breakfast near all juices and coffee milk, eggs etc. was finished. When we came to hotel there was only 1 bath robe in the room and reception was very unwillingness to do anything about it. Also in restaurant service was poor, nearly rude. Good things was location and room air conditioning.

But still way too expensive as the quality is very poor. The facilities are dated and a renovation is needed. Rooms are big but cold. There are balconies with nice views on almost every room which is nice if the weather is good. Good location!

I visited Spa Hotel Casino with my family for one night. Savonlinna is not a big city, maybe not even on Finnish scale, so although hotel is not in the "centre" it is just a short walk away from the market square and the fortress. When you add this the location of being on an island and by the lake, the location could not be much better. Especially if you get lucky and get a room that faces the bigger lake view. However, this is where the great things end. I assume it has once been a great hotel as well, but time has gone past the hotel building. It looks old from outside, and not in a good romantic way. Insides are clean and functional, but would need an update to resemble a hotel from this century. I did not even go to the "spa" as it did not look too tempting. Naturally the children did not mind. The room which we had was ok and large enough. It was updated some years ago, but no miracles were done even then. Restaurant was ok as well. Food was ok, service was ok (not as friendly as I would have expected when being in eastern part of Finland) . Breakfast also ok. So in average this was an OK hotel. It means it will suit your needs for a nice hotel to sleep in, it is clean, functional and location is great.. However, at least I felt a little bit sad that this great location is that matched in the hotel... anymore.…

The hotel is in a fantastic position, but really need some refurbishment. Rooms are battered and most of all cleanliness should and could be massively improved. The floors are in quite dire conditions, they might be clean, I didn't dare to investigate better, but for sure they are not clean looking. Moreover, at every shower the bathroom floor was flooded, clearly a sign of bad maintenance. On the other side, the bed was comfortable, there are a pool and saunas available, and the breakfast was in the finnish standards. Let's say there are better places around that deserve to get your money.
