The hotel is located in a former Kakola county prison from 1890. It is Finland's second prison hotel that was opened in September 2020. Katajanokka in Helsinki opened its doors to hotel guests in 2007.

We stayed here on October 1st and the hotel was not completely ready. Before arrival, I got a phone call that our booked superior room has electrical problems and we had to change to a standard twin at a reduced price of 116 euros. The prepaid rate for the superior room was 166 euros.

We got one of the best standard rooms from the 4th floor with a balcony and a spacious bathroom with a bathtub. Superior rooms located at the end of the wings have separate toilets and smaller bathrooms with a shower.

Standard rooms have espresso and soda-stream machines but no minibar or fridge. There was no mirror in the bathroom but we were told that they will be installed later. It has been problematic because of the bathroom windows.

Prison church on the 3rd floor, Bar Hilarius, and Restaurant Ruben are absolutely worth a visit.

The breakfast was pleasantly calm. It is served at Ruben. The food selection is not the widest but of good quality.

Dear Mikael, Many thanks for your kind review, and special thank you for understanding the issues we faced with the early stages for the opening. We are working hard to make sure that all the details will be finished to perfection and that we can always meet and exceed our guests' expectations. As you mentioned, we made a decision not to have minibars in the room due to sustainable values we have. To celebrate the cleanest tap water in the world each room is equipped with a Finnish MySoda carbobating machine, which is actually made of wood, not plastic; how cool is that!? Thank you also for your kind comments about our food & beverage outlets. At Ruben our food filosophy is to provide local and seasonal food from small farms celebrating fresh & clean produce and avoiding wastage. Thank you so much for your lovely review. I promise we will work on continuous improvement in our products and service, and please contact me when you are planning your next trip to Turku, I would like to ensure that you will experience at least a superior room, which you missed during your first prison break with us! Kind regards Eerika Rinne, General Manager

An old prison has been transformed into a boutique-type hotel which boasts a lot of different types rooms each full of character. We stayed in a standard room which had a bath tub and a small balcony. The room also had an air source heat pump which I think can be used in the summer to cool the room. Heating was not necessary in the winter although the bathroom was a bit colder than the room.

Even the standard room was nicely furbished and felt like all the small details had been thought carefully. I usually book a bit higher class hotels room but even this standard room offered an original and memorable stay. We had a Svane gel bed in our room which is by far the best hotel bed I have ever slept on. My husband and I have a Tempur bed in home and while the hotel's Svane bed isn't identical, it gave an extremely good night's sleep. Usually hotel beds are rubbish but this was great!

Although the bathroom was very spacious, there was not enough room by the sink for toiletries so bear that in mind if you are staying for longer than a night or two. I really liked the heated towel rail in the bathroom, that is a big plus when you want dry towels for your next shower or bath.

Breakfast was quite limited but fresh and tasty.

Location of the hotel is lovely: on top of a hill so scenery is great. I would think the balcony is amazing in the summer if there are small patio furniture guests can use. I do hope the hotel has added some furniture in the balconies.

I would definitely come here again, the hotel is very unique and stylish!

Such a nice experience. The renovation of the hotel from a prison to a hotel has really been made nicely, the end result is stunning. We stayed in a standard room with a double bed, and the room was spacious and nice, we especially liked the fact that it had a big enough bath tub.

Within walking distance of downtown, and the rest of the Kakola area is right next to it.

We will definitely be back when we come to Turku again.

I knew when I heard that there will be a hotel in the old prison, that I will spend a night there. And it was worth it. So greatly renovated and still a feeling of ages old prison, you can almost see what those walls have seen during the years.
The room was very clean and spacious and the beds were not the cheapest ones. Big tv, coffee maker and even MySoda 🙂 There was also moisturizer which is not very common item in a hotel room.
Air conditioner was officious and we had to shut it down because it was so near to the beds and blowed nothing but cold.
The breakfast was average Finnish type, lots of everything and something for everyone. Bonus was a smoothie!
Little parking issues there were and if you manage to find a parking place, it will cost 10 € more.
Nice restaurant and also a brewery of the prison nearby. Warmly recommended!

The old prison has been renovated beautifully and the area is lovely, although still partially under construction. Do note it’s a bit far away from the very center of town, but there’s also restaurants and bars close by. We used electric scooters to go back and forth into the city but its a bit far to walk.

We liked our stay and room was well appointed but there were a few disappointments along the way:
1. Breakfast. Super basic, felt cheap, and service wise there were always more empty trays than full ones. Would really have expected more as they advertise their restaurants as having been on the top 50 restaurants in Finland list, but the breakfast is the same you get in any generic chain hotel.
2. There was no one to staff the indoors wine bar. They said the hotel is full and there seemed to be plenty of customers wanting to sit in, but no one to serve them. We had to look around for someone to serve us and they complained they don’t have dedicated staff for the bar. Seems like an odd choice with a full hotel.
3. The douvet was too hot for our liking. The room temp was quite cool, which is nice in the summer, but we were too hot sleeping under the douvet and too cold without it.

Overall a nice stay, but likely won’t be back unless they fix the breakfast as that is one of my favorite parts of hotel living.

Dear latelammas, Thank you for your feedback and staying with us here in Hotel Kakola. Please rest assured that I will personally share your feedback with our hotel management team in order to action your comments. As the world situation has been a bit tricky the past 1,5 years, we have tried to find the best way of serving our breakfast with respecting the rules and regulations that we all have had. We are aiming to have fresh, local and quality food ingredients within our food and beverage outlets in order to offer selected quality options to our guests. This summer has been absolutely great as we have had so many wonderful guest comments regarding our hotel services, therefore I would like to apologise that your stay had couple issues which we will definitely fix for your next visit to Hotel Kakola. I would hope that we will see you back here soon and thank you once again your time :) Wishing you a splendid summertime! Best Regards, Mikael Aaltonen Service & Event Manager

After our first visit in Dec 2020, we left really pleased and decided to book again. Unfortunately the breakfast that was very good, but limited, earlier was now a very mediocre hotel buffet with several choices not refilled. I would have preferred the limited but high quality option instead and was very disappointed the quality no longer matched the price. Seems like the hotel made some poor decisions when more guests started to come in. Disapponting since otherwise the hotel is very nice and could have become our new go-to choice in Turku.

We spent the night in the very small Selli-room. When arriving to the hotel we were welcomed by a very friendly man, guiding us where to park. The hotel looked beautiful.

But, maybe we should have paid more attention when making the reservation: once arriving to the room we realised that quite few basic necessities were missing: shower, ironing board, hair dryer… The room had a toilet but since it was right next to the bed, it did not feel comfortable nor hygienic to do your business there - especially since the toilet missed the seat cover. We all know that the bacteria from the toilet can fly as far as 3 meters when flushing. Also, the tap in the room gave only ice cold water which was a bit of a shame when thinking of hand or face wash. The common shower facilities were ok and overall the hotel was beautiful, but next time we will definitely book other room than the ”real prison experience”.

Dear Sofia, Thank you for taking the time to write us. I was delighted to hear that you had the opportunity to meet with our gentleman Kari! You have clearly experienced the "real prison experience" as you stayed in one of our special room category. Within our cell rooms you can actually get a bit of feeling how the building used to be and when I was reading your feedback, you really had the old time prison vibe in your room during your stay with us. We only have couple of those rooms and due to high demand, these special rooms are almost daily occupied. As you have now experienced our cell room, next time when you are travelling to Turku I would truly recommend you to try our brand new suites which are opening soon! Then you would definitely experience something extraordinary compared to your previous stay ;) Thank you once again for your review and I look forward to welcoming you back in Hotel Kakola soon! The first impression is one of an old, stern and ugly brick building. But it grows on you! The friendly staff checked us in to a spacious, comfortable and clean room. The thick walls make for undisturbed sleep in a comfortable bed with deliciously fluffy pillows.

There was no room fridge but an uncomfortably placed safe. It is nice to have it, but unfortunately it was unsecured so anyone with a suitcase could wheel it out if they got access to the room.

Wi-Fi was free, password-protected and worked well.

The in-house restaurant has liberal hours and we liked the food. There is ample seating inside and outside.

Dear Reslysten54, Thank you for your feedback! Glad to hear that you had a pleasant stay at Hotel Kakola. The building used to serve as a prison, and is now protected by the Finnish heritage agency, so changes to the exterior have been kept to a minimum. But like you said, the bold, bulcky brick walls do grow on you, and keep the rooms nice and quiet! All of our rooms have safes that are bolted down from the bottom. We have to do a little check if this was not the case in your room. I wish you a happy summer, and hope to see you again at Hotel Kakola! Best regards, Henna H / Hotel Kakola

As buffet breakfasts go, it was average (the powdered eggs were swimming in broth). The room had a separate toilet & shower, but all the towels and hooks were in the toilet. No fridge. No power point near the bed, but they did cheerfully provide an extension cord when asked. The hotel charged extra for guests to park on their own property, which was particularly grubby.

Rooms were spacious and well appointed. Fun theme to the property, as it is a former prison, with suitable decorations.

The staff was extremely friendly all over: reception, restaurant, spa.
Room however, was only average, no fridge or minibar although we had a junior suite. The room was big, there was even a balcony, however the armchairs were a bit dirty and one footrest was missing.

A glass in the bathroom was dirty, there was white stuff on the bottom (toothpaste?).
Bathroom was spacious, some extra space to spread your things would have been nice. You couldn’t use the bidet shower when sitting on toilet as the faucet was too far.

There was trash on the corridor floor outside our room when we came and it was there when we left after two nights.

All and all, not a normal junior suite standard, not worth the money spent.
