This was a better hotel than its sister in Reykyavik. We had a breathtaking view of the town and the fjord which we didn't tire of looking at. To see the snow topped mountains, the pretty town and the blue water of the fjord was beautiful. The hotel staff were pleasant and helpful. The room was comfortable - a very good bed. I found the shower and toilet arrangement fine. A good shower with excellent water pressure. There were also tea and coffee making facilities which was very welcome. No safe in the room. We overlooked the town swimming pool also and could watch the steam lazily rising off the thermally heated water in the icy air. Gorgeous. I would recommend a visit. We went on the day of the cyclone when our day trip was cancelled and thoroughly enjoyed it. So clean, well organised and well equipped. And much much cheaper than dreadful things like the Blue Lagoon. I loved it there. The town is a bit of a walk down a steep hill which can be challenging if icy like it was when we were there. But we put on shoe grippers and were fine. There are buses too which we tried once and was free. The hotel has information about these. We ate here once for dinner and also had an afternoon tea. That was expensive but tasty. The dinner menu is limited and expensive although reasonably tasty. Breakfast was pretty good. There was even a waffle making machine. I would recommend this place to stay in this lovely town.

One star down for the weird commode and shower closet arrangements which other reviewers have mentioned... However the staff cannot be blamed for the design flaws! Excellent shower pressure.

The breakfast staff make guests feel as if we are at a five-star hotel. And the two desk staff who were on duty on Sunday afternoon, July 18, cannot be equaled. After 24 hours in airports and on the road, we felt and looked it. Nevertheless, both answered our very many questions and concerns, and gave us advice as if we'd arrived freshly bathed and coiffed. Kudos to both of them.

The Aurora Restaurant is supposed to be good. We waited too long to make a reservation, so we had to look elsewhere.

Blackout curtains they're not, but they are room darkening. You don't want blackout because both the commode closet and the shower closet have sharp corners at the entrances.

This large hotel is at a 5 minutes walk (a mildly steep slope) from downtown Akureyri.
The rooms are spacious, clean, and well furnished. The quality of the provided toiletry is excellent.
If you are coming by care, there is a huge free parking just outside, charging stations are available too.

I genuinely have no idea how people are rating this hotel highly. I am not very picky with hotels, but this one was beyond belief IMO. Walking into the room, it was basically a Tokyo-sized room, with the bathroom about 12 inches away from the bed. On top of this, the bathroom had a translucent door with a hole instead of a doorknob, and no fan. So basically you are just going to the restroom in the same room as your partner.

Then, on to the truly absurd part. The curtains aren't even close to blackout. They are basically sheer white curtain that blocks out about 10% of the light. In the summer in iceland, you might as well just have no curtains at all.

When I asked the front desk if they had any rooms with blackout curtains, the woman in charge snarkily told me "This is Iceland during the summer. You just need to get used to it." Really? I mean first of all, this was my 6th hotel of the trip, and the other 5 to that point had blackout curtains. So her point about "This is Iceland, deal with it" is patently false. Second, what type of customer service is this?

Just a comical hotel, really. I ended up staying a guest house 10 minutes north of Akureyri, and it was idyllic and lovely. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere better.

We had two rooms on the fourth floor, one set up as a king and one as twin. Both rooms were spacious and comfortable with lovely view of the Hlidarfjall ski area. The bathrooms were well appointed with quality L’occitane products and there was a good coffee maker as well. The rooms lacked a fridge and a safe which might be expected in a hotel of this standard. We found the location of the hotel to be very convenient with a large (free) car park and only 10 minutes walk to the town centre. There is quite a steep hill to walk up and down which was a good work out for us but would be difficult for those with mobility problems. Sensible, non slip footwear required for snowy/icy conditions. The hotel doesn’t have a pool / hot tub but is directly opposite Akureyri’s excellent thermal pool complex. This offers great value compared to the other thermal bathing options in the area. Breakfast was of good quality with a reasonable selection on offer. We had one evening meal in the Aurora restaurant which was excellent. All in all the hotel was a comfortable and convenient base for our 4 day break in this stunning part of Iceland.

Modern hotel. Stylish and interesting design of room- bathroom is particularly “interesting”- if you are with travelling friends it might be awkward…
Great location to enjoy city and surrounding area.
Plenty of free parking right around the hotel. Right opposite the local pool.

We originally booked Hotel Kea but switched after one night. Icelandair Hotel is a few blocks from the small city center and across the street from a fabulous swimming complex. The hotel, I think run by Hilton, is modern, well staffed by amiable professionals, and very comfortable. We booked a suite on the top floor and could not have been happier. Ample space for storage. Excellent bed. Modern, ample bathrooms. The breakfast was quite good, and we had dinner one night in the restaurant, which was excellent. Parking on site. Large lobby with bar. The only drawback is that you might encounter bus tours. This can make the lobby (and perhaps breakfast) crowded. The swimming complex is a bonus. Outdoors but geothermally heated pools. You can walk in, pay, rent a towel, use a coded locker, and enjoy. Extremely clean and modern. I swam in 34 degree F weather in heated pool. Divine. Lap lanes available. You enter the pool from a small holding pool that is inside and warm.

A beautiful hotel room! Incredibly spacious and lovely toiletries provided. The restaurant is also excellent for dinner and breakfast, with vegetarian options. The staff are also very welcoming. The room we had faced the street, so we couldn't be too comfortable with the curtains open. Also, we could hear a very loud sound from the room upstairs when they would turn their water on. Overall, however, an amazing hotel.

This is a newer hotel a bit away from the main part of town. The pluses are that the rooms are clean and well designed, with good storage space and a comfortable bed. The shower has great water pressure and there are nice, thick towels. The lobby area is very nice and there is a terrific happy hour every night. The minuses are that the rooms are super small with thin walls. We could hear the neighbors alarm going off! The bathroom is set next to one side of the bed, offering little privacy, in spite of the door. The breakfast does not open until 7am on the dot, so not even an option to sit with coffee before the buffet is put out. The breakfast buffet is delicious and worth the wait. One big negative is that the wifi is horrible. You can only have one device connected to the internet (if you have 2 emails, problem solved) but the connection was slow and kept dropping and you had to sign in every day. For a modern hotel, that is just not acceptable. Overall, it was a positive experience.
