Positives:
1) Very spacious apartment at the bottom of the stairs - two bedrooms, kitchen, living room and bathroom. 2) Free, fast WiFi connection. 3) Free street parking. 4) Well equipped kitchen with a stove, various pots and pans, kettle, microwave and fridge. 5) Iron and ironing board were available. 6) The location was reasonably central, 10min walk to restaurants and shops. 7) Toiletries were provided. 8) Large flat screen TV.

Negatives:
1) No tea/coffee. 2) the apartment was cold - some of the heaters were set up, so that you couldn't turn the heat higher. 3) One flimsy, thin pillow per person - no extra pillows were provided.

We stayed in the garden annex at the end of March. Apartment was exactly what we were after - basic, but clean and comfortable and a great base to relax in before or after a day in the city. Excellent value for money, too. I was a bit wary as it was cheaper than other similar accommodation, but needn't have worried.

The apartments are close to the Old Harbour area, which has quite a few restaurants and Harpa a little further on. About 10 minutes from the main shopping area (6-7 minutes from the Settlement Museum). Although tour companies/buses don't pick up directly from this location at the moment, there are hotels about 5 minutes away you can go to, so still convenient.

We also appreciated having self-catering facilities, to save a little on food costs (there's a Vindir supermarket about 10 minutes away, and there are a few little supermarkets in the main shopping area too). Kitchen has a two-ring hob, microwave and all the preparation materials and crockery you need. And a kettle of course (vital!).

There's also a comfy bed, sofa and television, small dining table and cabinet with lots of leaflets about Iceland to help plan your trip.

We didn't meet the owner on arrival, but he left clear and helpful instructions about how to get into the apartment, WiFi and so forth. My husband bumped into him a couple of days later and said he was very friendly.

The only thing I would say is that this probably isn't the accommodation for you if you're looking to party in your room/come back loud late at night - it's a residential area and while we didn't hear any street noise from the apartment, you could hear what was going on in the driveway. So you do need to be considerate of your fellow guests and neighbours!

For anyone else, providing you're not after luxury, I'd highly recommend 32 Tungata.

The apartment is on a quiet street a short walk (10 min) to harbor but longer walk to the old town area (we found a wonderful café for breakfast along the Harbor. See my separate review I will post for the Café Haiti).

Very large apartment. We had the one in the basement which has windows facing the street (not sure how many units there are as it looked like there is a second one also in the basement but in the back, and then you had the upper floors as well.) Bedrooms are big enough for beds but not much more. Large kitchen, living room. Hall separates rooms. Living room is sort of a master suite with its own door to the hallway and then the master bedroom off of the living room. Beds were comfortable and water, throughout Iceland, is VERY hot (because its geothermal which means it also smells like sulfur).

Only complaint was the bathroom. Its really small. We had to keep most of our toiletries in another room. Also, the shower is one of those where the floor of the shower is part of the floor of the bathroom (you can see this in one of the professional photos). The drain in the shower was not working well so the water flowed from the shower area all over the entire bathroom floor. So it was wet at night when we went to the bathroom etc. When we were leaving, I advised the owner who said he would look into it, but frankly I would be surprised if he was not already aware of it. The owner was very nice and gave us (via email) a lot of information.

The owner told us that there was plenty of street parking, but when we arrived at 2am from our flight to Iceland, there was little street parking to be found (we did find a space but a couple doors down the street).

The photos you can find on line for the apartment are fairly accurate (for those applicable to the unit we had). But don’t expect all of the photos to match what you get as it depends on which unit you have. Overall, if I am in Reykjavik again, I would stay here, although I might stay a little closer to the main part of town.

Response from Jon J, Owner at 32 Tungata

Thank your taking time to review my apartment. I value guests reviews as well as them letting me know if something is wrong in the apartment and always respond immediately. In your case on the day you left I received info from you via email about the shower drain not functioning and immediately went to the apartment and made sure it was fixed. Im sorry that you had this experience but I am also sorry that you insinuate that I already knew about this problem - I did not. The problem was caused by a label from a shampoo flask that had gone down the drain. Best regards and thanks again for staying at my apartment. Jón

We booked the garden annex and we really did not know what to expect. When we arrived at 32 Tungata late at night (at about 9pm), we found our key in an envelope attached to the door of the main building along with a few instructions and a picture of the garden annex.

The garden annex is basically a garage conversion and it does not look at all appealing from the outside. Don't let that put you off. As soon as we opened the door, we realised straight away the we had landed on your feet - despite the grotty outside appearance, the flat was really nice! Clean and warm, wooden floors, king-sized bed and overall very cosy. The plus of staying in a garage conversion, is that the flat is super quiet - none of the usual door slamming or late night shouting you normally get in hotels. The minus is that you don't have a reception, so you have to book all your tours online, but that didn't bother us in the slightest.

The flat is located in a residential area about 8 minute walk from the Harbour, which means that no pick up is needed for the whale watching tour. And it's about 10 minutes from the main shopping area and the town centre. The closest swimming pool is Vesturbaejarlaug, about 10 minute walk. We found a nice little supermarket open until 8pm on the way to the pool. And there's a great hot dog kiosk just outside the pool, if you are desperate for food.

Since the flat comes with a kitchen, you can visit Reykjavik without breaking the bank and you can come back for a warm drink any time you feel like it. The kitchen was fairly well equipped: kettle, electric cooker, plates, cutlery, pans and pots. However, it did not come with a toaster or a microwave oven, which was one of the downsided of the accommodation.

The other downside of this otherwise amazing flat was the lack of a curtain for the kitchen window. This means probably tons of light if you are staying in summer (so do bring a good eye mask). For us it meant that we had to make sure that all lights were off in the evening when we had showers in the bathroom and had to walk through the kitchen back to the bedroom. Unless we wanted the whole neighbourhood to see us in our towels!

Upon suggestion of the owner, we booked our transfer from the airport via the link on the property's website. It redirects you to the Gray Line website. It saved us long queues at the airport.

We had a nice stay here--it's not fancy, but it's comfortable, and for the price and location it was perfect. It was great to have a kitchen since restaurants are expensive in Reykjavik. The location was great for walking to the downtown area, but it was quiet. We rented the 2 bedroom apartment, which meant 2 queen sized beds, a living room, bathroom, and kitchen. The owner was very easy to communicate with via email prior to our stay.

Was travelling back to USA from UK and went via Iceland. Hotels were expensive and the cheaper ones were too far out. I came upon this little gem. A small 1 bedroom apt with a living/dining room/kitchen. And only 2 mins walk down town. Happens to be on the same street as a number of Embassies, notably, the French, Canadian, Russian and Finnish. Is actually next door to the Finnish embassy. With eating out expensive, having the ability to make breakfast, etc, saved on the expenses. Is really only good for 2 people as it does look like the place is a converted garage, but as I said at basically half the cost of other places in the area, it is a great bargain.

Me and my wife stayed at 32 Tungata for a week in april and the location is just great, not once did we have to take a cab or a bus. Its only 5 or 10 minutes from the vivid nightlife.
The apartment it self is excellent and is very well equipped,
Jon the owner was great and very helpful with all our needs. We would love to stay again.

When we arrived, we were greeted by Jon. He was very nice and showed us round the apartment. I found the apartment to be very clean and have all the amenities we needed. It was in a quiet part of town and next to the embassies but within only a 5-10 minute walk, you’d be in the centre of Reykjavik. All tours also pick up at town call which is 5-10 minutes away. I would really stay at this place again when I next return! Thank you Jon!

My partner and I stayed at 32 Tungata for 4 nights. The check in process was smooth with Jon leaving our key in a safe area and for us to make ourselves at home. We stayed in the garden annex which was perfect. It had enough room and amenities. We were even able to make food with a little stove, microwave and fridge equipped in the annex. The annex was warm with guide books and a tv you could watch, Parking was just off the street and we never had any issues with this. Jon was responsive and even went out of his way to help let us in when we had locked ourselves out..oops! Overall i would recommend this place to base yourself whilst travelling around beautiful Iceland. It had everything we needed and Jon was most helpful. Thank you!

Have always stayed in hotels before, but this apartment is excellent for location (but be aware that, like us,you have to push a manual wheelchair, the property is on a hill! It's my fault-I should have Google-Earthed it!). It is minimally furnished in a retro style (we loved it!),but has everything you need. Excellent well-equipped kitchen, plenty of heating if you need it and, most important of all, REALLY comfortable beds! Very clean throughout. Free WiFi. Very helpful friendly owner (just like all the Icelandic people). I shouldn't be giving this such a good review-it might not be available next time I want to book it!

Hi Wendy, First of all this depends on whom you booked these tours with. Grayline does pick up at my place but as you say you do not want to wait to be picked up and then continue on a bus picking others up. 32 Tungata is with in a walking distance to the harbour where I guess you have booked your dinner cruise. It takes about 5-7 minutes to walk. It takes about 10 minutes to walk to the main bus hub for Grayline and other tour operators in the centre. Taxi arrives with in minutes after calling 58552200 32 Tungata is with in a walking distance of the city center where you find most of the restaurants, cafes and of course the night life. It takes you about 7 minutes to walk to the center. Regards Jon
