Dating back to the sixteenth century, this majestic palazzo on St John Street, a Valletta landmark, underwent a transformation into a hotel in the late nineteenth century. Acquired by the current owners at the turn of the century, they meticulously restored and modernised the property, preserving its historical charm. Today, the hotel features twenty-three uniquely styled rooms and suites, each offering a blend of tradition and modernity. With a serene courtyard and a breathtaking rooftop terrace providing expansive views of the Grand Harbour, our hotel promises an unforgettable stay in the heart of Malta's capital.

I'm not exaggeration when saying that this was the best stay i ever had at an accommodation, both locally and abroad.
And here is a list of my main criteria / priority at any accommodation, and how The Cumberland performed at each of them.

Rates:
I was quite surprised at how low in price this accommodation was.
For what we’ve got, usually other accommodations will charge you triple the amount, and that would still be quite reasonable.

Location:
This hotel is bang in the centre of capital city. 1 min (if you take it easy) walking distance from one of the most beautiful sites on the island, the Saint John's Co-Cathedral.
Valletta (the capital city) is also the hub and centre of the public transport, so this makes life much easier.

Staff:
The staff was very helpful, and this was shown even from the correspondence we had when I paced my booking. They gently explained everything and showed us around.

Cleanliness:
I could have asked for a cleaner place. Especially in these times of COVID. The room was very well cleaned and sanitized, with everything properly placed. Hand sanitizers are placed all around the hotel, and we were also given one for our room.

Food:
With our rate, we had the breakfast included. I had read previous reviews about this hotel, and some had mentioned that the breakfast was the least favourite part of it. I think they went to the wrong place! The breakfast is huge. Ok, you only have to choose from 4 main items, but this is a breakfast not a dinner. Apart from the main item, you are also given a small platter of croissants, a mixture of fresh fruits, 1 coffee or anything similar, 1 juice, 1 yogurt form a selection, a selection of jams & butter. There wasn’t enough space on the table to place everything. If this is not enough for you, then nothing will satisfy you in life!

Room:
Initially I had booked the Deluxe Suite. We were later informed that due to multiple cancellations due to COVID, we were upgraded to the Deluxe Suite With Terrace. Since this was for us a special occasion, this really made our stay even more perfect. It’s actually an apartment and not a room. It’s spacious, very well designed and the décor is an art in itself.

Facilities:
There is a 24/7 reception desk, whom are very helpful.
A lift which makes all floors accessible.
A whirlpool is also available at the rooftop. It accommodates 4 people at one go comfortably. It’s very well kept and clean.
There is also roof top bar, but at the time we were there

Great choice of hotel nestled amongst the streets of Valletta . The room was immaculate . We opted for a room with a balcony not that we used it much in January but a nice option. Breakfast was included and a good choice of food available . Front desk was always maned 24/7 and staff were always happy to advise or help with any enquiries . Great walking location to all there is to see in the area with plenty of bars and restaurants at hand you can also choose to eat at the hotel in the evenings if required at a cost. Perhaps not suited for those with walking difficulties due to the nature of the hotels location but there is a lift in the hotel , but then the whole of valleta perhaps would not be a good choice for you . Would I stay here again
Yes..

This is one of the finest Valletta hotels, a cut from the many average ones in the capital.
From the moment you walk in you can feel that a lot of thought has been put into ensuring a wonderful and comfortable experience for guests.
This is a small boutique hotel in a beautifully restored building with a few rooms on each floor.
Our room was in the highest floor available for rooms, that is the forth floor. The room was large, comfortable and with an excellent choice of furnishings and colours, as well as a lovely terrace.
The hotel also offers a beautiful terrace in the fifth floor with a jacuzzi tub, shower, bar, tables & chairs, and sun loungers.
The breakfast is served in the hotel’s restaurant and consisted of a cooked served breakfast (good choice on offer), that was well served by polite, and professional staff.
Well done and good initiative to the owners.
Highly recommended.

I know what you're thinking, "The Cumberland looks nice". It's decorated in the thoroughly modern style and appearances are encouraging. There's some univiting gloomy spaces that don't work well but let's move on from those. Also, the rooms looking in on the courtyard carry on the gloomy, absence-of-natural-light vibe. Never mind though, look at all that navy blue.

And it's full of nice touches. Molton Brown toiletries, bathrobes, even a pod coffee maker (the latter needs a good clean and has the mechanical equivalent of prostate problems), some thought has gone in to this.

Shame then that it messes up the basics. The shower in particular is atrocious, alternating between molten lava and Siberian tundra in a rapidly ossicilating cycle. And the beds aren't that comfy. And the lovely fixtures and fittings are falling off (including the card reader in the lift). And then there's the terrible noise isolation from the inner stairwell, don't expect to sleep beyond the first door slamming, several floors below, in the morning.

Shame, because the staff are lovely. Not the chap overseeing breakfast (obviously), he clearly would rather be doing literally anything else.

I stayed a whole week here while I visited Malta. Not a fancy big hotel but lovely and modern. They don't have spa centre and gym facilities, however it is perfect for the visitors who visit Malta to explore Malta, because all you need are "perfect location", "nice & big & clean room", "friendly service" and "good breakfast". If you are travelling around Malta by buses and ferries, this hotel is the best choice.

A quiet boutique hotel just off the popular streets in Valletta, this place is truly a gem. We booked a deluxe suite with a terrace and the suite was incredible - it was spacious and beautifully designed (even nicer than the photos online). The attention the interior design was given was very apparent, yet the place was still comfortable. The little things - like a small hand sanitizer in the room - were valued. Our breakfast requests were also catered to which was very much appreciated. Thank you for a truly perfect stay!

I’ve only just gotten around to writing my review of the Cumberland, but we stayed there back in the summer and we were blown away by how beautiful the hotel is. It’s in the perfect location with the main street just steps away. Also there’s a lovely little buzz on the street in the evening so evening if you don’t fancy going out, you can relax on the balcony and enjoy the atmosphere.

We stayed in a deluxe suite with a terrace and the room was absolutely perfect. \the terrace was a large size with comfortable patio furniture making it ideal for relaxing, the only improvements on the terrace were it would have been great if there was some kind of umbrella for shade (although I appreciate it was on a high floor so this could be dangerous) and some sun loungers would also be a great touch. The interior of the room was large, spacious, stunning bathroom with a shower and bathtub. The dressing room had plenty of storage for clothes and a full size mirror and dressing table. The small living room that adjoined the bedroom was also a great place to relax after a busy day around Valletta. The kitchen was also a great size, although, it wasn’t really useful for anything other than making coffee as there was nothing to cook with - not even a toaster.

The rooms also came with irons and hairdryers, which is a must have.

The only thing that let this hotel down was some of the service. The check in was flawless and the ladies behind the reception desk were really lovely and very helpful. The housekeeping staff were also very pleasant and always stopped to say goodmorning as well as doing an outstanding job of cleaning our room. The issue was with the young man behind reception, one evening one of our keys stopped working, which meant we couldn’t access the lift, and we were told we couldn’t have a new key card. Which was a bit of a pain since we were staying for a week and occasionally would go off and do our own thing and meet back up at the hotel. There was also an issue with our electrics, and when reported, our room door was left open upon our return. This was reported via email, but no response.

Also had an issue with breakfast one day (and we didn’t bother to return). We sat down and were just completely ignored by the staff. Watching them attend to other guests who came in after us, we weren’t even offered drinks. And they knew we were there as they walked past us several times so it was clear that it was a blatant ignoring situation. The breakfast we did eat at the hotel was of amazing quality and I’d recommend eating there for the dishes, not the service.

We’ve stayed several times at their sister hotel the strand and find the service over there exceptional at all times so its a bit of a shame that it cost so much more and wasn’t the same level of service.

Hotels in Valletta always give something special, they are located in the historical town houses and embrace a beautiful atmosphere. This hotel definitely has this. We had a room with balcony, which was nice to sit outside on a warm evening, the room was covered in blue & gold.
On the rooftop there is a jacuzzi, unfortunately views over the city are limited.
Breakfast was served à la carte and quite tasty, although quite slow.

All tourist attractions are on walking distance and there are many restaurants and bars around.

Hotels in Valletta are not cheap, but staying in this historical city of knights is a great experience.

We opted to stay here as we were always interested to try out this hotel. The check-in was very smooth, there's also a coffee/station right next to the reception which is very convenient, a note to the staff as well as they were very attentive and nice.

The room was very nice, we booked a deluxe room and to our surprise we were given a duplex room which was way too more than we asked for. The rooms enjoy a good view of the city, breakfast was also very "stylish" and different from what you usually expect.

I surely would stay here again and would recommend this hotel!

Great Location , Great accommodation. All rooms well appointed. Would recommend the deluxe double , although this does not have a private balcony, the fully opening large skylight brings the warm fresh outdoor indoors. The wonderful roof terrace gives you more space facilities and a better outlook than the private balconies.

Hi, we stayed in a suite on the 4th floor with a balcony overlooking st John street. Nice big bed but didn't measure it for exact size. There was a separate sitting room area which had sofas that looked like they were possibly sofa bed? The cooked breakfast was included and was very good. Cooked to order but I'd rather have a good leisurely breakfast than a cold pre cooked buffet! No issues with shower leakage it was a very nice bathroom. No separate tour desk but reception very helpful. 5-10 min walk (if that) to bus depot by main entrance to city. I arranged my airport shuttles independently before flying out. This hotel suited us very well and intend staying there again, cheers!

Is it in a hilly location? Are there shops and restaurants close by?
Answer from TantiV
San Gwann, Malta19 contributions13 helpful votes
Hi, the Cumberland is in the heart of Malta's capital city, currently Europe's cultural capital, Valletta. You will find the largest variety of shops abailable locally, selling anything you need. The Hotel is on a road that can take you down to the seafront, with side sea views, and views of the Grand Harbour from the rooftop area. It is not hilly, but urban, and one can take any direction he/ she feels appropriate, sideways to the city centre or downwards towards the sea. Hope this helps.

Bonjour, Un parking à proximité de l’hôtel? Bonne journée
Answer from TantiV
San Gwann, Malta19 contributions13 helpful votes
Valletta is the capital city of Malta, so there might be some parking restrictions, namely allowing residents more access to visitors. The city is managed by a cctv system where vehicles entering the city will be timed going in and out, them they have to pay for the duration of their visit to the capital. However being the capital has its advantages as all public transport is routed in Valletta, so that should solve any other problem. There are also a number of designated parking areas around the city where you pay a minimal fee once upon entering.the area.
