We absolutely loved the Excelsior. It is positioned right by the large harbour and from the balcony we could watch boats large and small come and go. The hotel is well located for an easy walk into town - if you don't mind uphill all the way on the way there - or you can easily call a taxi - we found Ubers came in less than 2 minutes and were not at all expensive. Our room - a side sea view room - was huge, very comfortable and quiet and came with a pleasant balcony and lovely view where we could could watch the fun and festivities around the Santa swim one Sunday morning. Staff were fabulous in all areas of the hotel, so helpful, and charming from reception to the maids and to the restaurants at breakfast and dinner. Breakfast was until 10.30 am and came with a wonderful selection of hot and cold choices, all of which were delicious. We ate in the restaurant too, which was excellent and not more expensive than the restaurants in town. There were a couple of small improvements which could be made - the orange juice at breakfast seemed a little thin on oranges, and why oh why no mini bar - very unusual for a 5 star hotel, especially when an empty fridge was provided. That said we had a lovely time and will certainly choose to stay at the Excelsior again when next in Malta …

We visited this hotel for the first time in 2016 and really enjoyed our stay so it was an easy choice for our return trip this time. The hotel is a perfect location for walking into Valletta on an evening to enjoy the many attractions. The decor of the hotel is like an opulent, grand, turn of the century stately home. Some reviews have mentioned that it is dark but that is the design and I am sure there are stark , modern hotels to choose if you wish to find them. It is immaculate throughout, although the front of the building could do with freshening up. The staff -whatever their position- were fantastic. Super courteous and helpful. They worked with a smile on their face at all times. We ate in the hotel restaurant once and in the bar once and found the food to be good quality and tasty. Breakfast was also delicious and varied. Plates could be warmer though. The room was huge and had everything we could want. The small, cheap hairdryer could be upgraded I think. All in all we found the hotel excellent value for money, very comfortable and would certainly recommend…

We really enjoyed our stay in this hotel. Decor elegant - maybe a little dated but don’t let that put you off. The atmosphere and service in the hotel was fabulous. It was relaxing - yet staff were friendly and in hand to help. There are lovely large lounge areas to sit and relax with a drink , snack. We used room service several times which was extremely good value for money and an excellent service. The room was immaculately clean. Even had “ turn down” service in the evenings as well as room cleaned every day , fresh towels etc. Although the hotel was busy we had no issues with noise and slept brilliantly as the huge bed was very comfortable. The breakfast buffet was very varied with a huge range of choice , including freshly cooked omelettes etc. meats, cheeses, cereals, good selection of breads. Cooked breakfasts - fruits and yogurts. Very comfortable with super views over harbour. Staff were excellent and location is outstanding with easy access on foot to historic Valletta plus to ferry and bus station. Breakfast deal well worth it and pools indoor and out make a great spot to stay.

The hotel is large & beautiful, set in a convenient location. We reached the hotel at 8pm, and our check in was smooth. We changed our room from a double bed on 3rd floor to a twin bed on the 5th floor because of better views. On our request, the 2 beds were put together and the room rearranged accordingly. At night when we tried the hot water tap in the sink, there was no hot water. After we complained, they promised to send somebody soon but it was a while before the engineer turned up. As it was a big job, by the time the engineer finished, it was well past midnight and we were exhausted. The air conditioner in the room was not great so we could not sleep very well. Next morning we were very tired and complained again. So an engineer was eventually sent up and the issue resolved. From that point onwards, we really enjoyed our stay in the hotel. The room was large with the balcony facing the swimming pool and harbour. The bed was comfortable and the room had all necessity amenities. There was a lot of storage space and a large writing table and a mini fridge. We got complimentary water bottles every day and the housekeeping staff were kind enough to give us two or three more, when required. The breakfasting area was huge and the breakfast spread was quite good but having the same food for 6 days became boring after day 3. As my wife is vegetarian, we thought it would have been better. if they had more hot vegetarian choices. The breakfast staff were really nice and we got a window table on 4 days. The steps from the hotel to the main road may be difficult for people with mobility issues but the road from the hotel to the main road is quite easy and is just a minute longer. My wife used the spa and did not have a good experience. Firstly the spa is just a sauna at a steam room with rooms for massages. My wife tried a summer treatment which she did not enjoy as the body exfoliation, which was meant to be for 30 minutes, was done for less than 10 minutes and the massage was not enjoyable either. On our final day, after checking out, my wife mentioned this experience to the guest relationship staff, Abir, who very kindly offered one drink and one complimentary burger for each of us as a goodwill gesture. She was very professional, polite and very helpful and does need a special mentioning. We used the hotels taxi for airport transfer and would definitely recommend that. On the whole we had a positive experience in the hotel, mainly because of their staff. We were there for 6 nights and would recommend staying here.…

Very comfortable hotel with good amenities (swimming pool, gym) and a beautiful outlook. We had a sea view with balcony and it was spacious and comfortable, though furnishings were a little tired. There was an issue with our bathroom (water leak from above) but it was speedily resolved and the staff were very helpful. As other reviews have mentioned, there are a lot of stairs to descent to get to the hotel entrance (and more importantly, to ascend to get out!) but this was not a problem for us. I can see that this access would be uncomfortable in hotter times of year, and very inconvenient or impossible for people with mobility problems. Would happily stay here again.

Having enjoyed two nights at this hotel at the end of June, prior to a cruise, we were impressed enough to return for a longer stay of seven nights and were not disappointed. It is a large hotel with many rooms and amenities / facilities but still manages to provide a quality and personal service. We had a large well furnished and well maintained bedroom with balcony and harbour view, with twice daily service. The bathroom had a separate walk in shower and WIFI speeds were good. Breakfast catered to a variety of tastes. Reception and Concierge staff were capable, friendly and helpful and we would be happy to return to this hotel should we visit Malta again.

We stayed 5 days at the Grand Excelsior in a superior room with a lovely partial sea view and like others were pleasantly surprised the view was far more than partial. Balcony was a good size and not overlooked. The room was large , clean and luxurious and in no way tired as some reviews state. . The style of this hotel is traditional and opulent so it might not suit those who prefer a minimalist style. We only had one evening meal which was a buffet although a personal meal cooked by a chef can be arranged. The evening buffet is themed each evening and our meal was Indian. Very nice and a large choice but would have had dinner there more often if the buffet had been varied and not themed. Buffet breakfast was of a good standard. Enjoyed the live music in the bar each evening. The staff were very friendly and helpful. In particular Everton and Heathcliffe, members of the Concierge Team. Nothing was too much trouble for them when we we wanted information or restaurants booking. Morever the hotel is not far to walk to the centre of Valletta and the hotel provides a courtesy car a couple of times a day if needed. My view is that this is a superb hotel and we hope to return. …

Had a partial sea room , but it did give a lovely view ,more than i thought it would . If you have mobility problems there is a lot of steps to climb up and steep hill to reach the gates .My husband has mobility problems , we took it very slowly . Once you reach that area , looks like a bus station . As for the rooms dark and dingy , hotel looks tired and in need of an overhaul. Certainly not worth the money . The bar lounge staff let this hotel down , staff members when we first arrived in a huddle moaning about being understaffed and just generally gossiping, ignoring guests that was what they did the whole 7 nights of our stay .Then they were taking wrong orders , getting the bills wrong . Ignoring people with empty glasses . The young supervisors were not much better. I worked in hospitality for many years was so frustrating to watch this clown show. One girl "karenst" was trying really hard , but no team work to back her up. We went to the Buffet dinner 3 times.The staff working that area were superb ! We used the hotel driver for a tour , name could start with D , absolutely superb . …
