Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Really friendly atmosphere and welcoming staff with an engaging and refreshing "Independent " feel which is a pleasant alternative to the more "Corporate" experience you tend to get with the chains. They also have someone in their kitchen who knows what they're doing - agreat asset - both evening meal and breakfast were of a high standard. I would definitely stay here again.

This was the fourth time we’ve had Sunday lunch recently and every one has been good. The pork was very tender, and apparently, also the beef. Portions are big and the choice of vegetables excellent - carrots, parsnips, brocolli, red cabbage, cauliflower cheese and roast potatoes. There’s a decent selection of wines and the merlot was very nice. My only slight moan would be that the service was a bit slow, but they were extremely busy and it wasn’t a problem. We’ll be back.

We have been going to the Pike and Eel for over 40 years, during which time there have been many changes. Sunday lunch, a choice of roasts, has been one of our favourites. The experience has been generally positive. We each had a different roast - beef, pork, and lamb. The portions were generous, and the food was tasty, although the beef could have been more tender. We did not book in advance and found ourselves sitting in a dark, somewhat dingy area of the restaurant at long tables beside other diners. The décor left something to be desired. Instead of making the room bright and welcoming, the proprietors have opted for dark blue paint on the walls and dim lighting throughout. The dining experience could be made so much more pleasant by careful redecoration and different furniture. At the moment, one has the feeling that the place is going downmarket, but we would still go again.

Upon booking for one night as we had a function locally. We arrived at around 6:45pm Location I’m sure in the summer months is wonderful. But felt very dark and dingy in the dark at the back entrance to the hotel. Upon entering room 11, we were got with a really bad smell, thinking it much just have been an unused room, we unpacked and got on our way out for the evening. We returned to the room about 11:30 pm and the smell was awful, clearly an issue with drains from the bathroom, making it not a pleasant place to sleep. The bathroom felt very unclean with cobwebs and dead ladybirds. Although the sheets were clean on top of the bed was also a dead ladybird and dotted around the room. The kettle didn’t seem to turn its self off ..at boiling . And the walls very very thin and the room next door we could hear them talking from early morning around 7am, so upon an unsettled night we dropped the key at reception and left. I would not recommend room 11 at this property

We stayed in the professor owl room. Upon entering the room we were happy with the 3 star set up, kettle, tea bags, wardrobe. It was for only one night. However, upon entering the bathroom, and flushing the toilet a stench entered the room and the entire bedroom stunk of sewage. The we heard a loud banging noise coming from the toilet pipes and we saw from our bedroom window water being pumped onto the roof. So every time we opened the window for fresh air we smelt sewage. When we showered the excess water was being pumped like a spray onto the roof and it stunk! At night we were disturbed by toilets and sinks because the pipe were making an awful sound! It was terrible! We never slept! I slept at 3am and my husband stayed awake as other guests were knocking on doors and making noise at 3am. It’s such a shame we had a bad night. The outside was lovely. But the room was horrendous. The receptionist in the morning greeted us and asked us if we had a great stay. We said there were people making noises and knocking at 3/4am and she said but that not possible. She couldn’t hardly speak any English. Which didn’t help because we were so tired we didn’t want to stay and voice how we really felt as there was a communication issue. Maybe if we booked a different room like the top floor suite we might have had a better night? To top it off there was loud bass music all night coming from somewhere I think of the boats???? Till 4am…

Response from Jane Loveday, Guest Services / Front Office at The Pike & Eel Hotel and Marina
Responded 18 Oct 2023
Dear Guest I would like to extend my sincere apologies to you for the problem that you experienced with your bathroom. This was completely unacceptable but unfortunately the issue was only discovered after your departure. The room was immediately put out of service until the plumbing problem had been resolved. It is a great shame that you did not make our staff aware of this problem during your stay. We would have immediately offered you another room and helped you to move your belongings. Unfortunately, in life things can sometimes go wrong and whilst we are sad that you did not make us aware of this at the time, we would nevertheless like to compensate you for your stay which was ruined. We hope that you will give us another try in the future. Please get in touch directly with us and ask for the manager so that we may assist you personally. Warm wishes

We had a very good experience at The Pike and Eel when we stayed. The chalets were very clean and perfectly suitable for our stay (apart from the repeated noises from the toilet cistern that sounded like a fog horn). We were lucky to have nice weather so we enjoyed drinks outside sat by the river watching the boats in the sun. We ate in the hotel/pub restaurant and the food was very good. The service was excellent too and nothing was too much trouble. If you’re looking for somewhere to stay in the area, it is definitely recommended.

Family meal- 4 adults and 2 dogs. Lovely to find a pub who welcome dogs inside. Food was amazing! Staff very friendly and patient with slow decisions. Did I mention the food being amazing? Had pasta with burrata/anchovy sauce myself - may have to eat there weekly now.
