Stayed in room 37 which was fine for solo traveller. Attached private bathroom was good and perfect hot shower. Free coffee was appreciated and I cooked a meal one day which helps with the high costs of Norway. Have left feeling very relaxed.

Stayed here for three nights in total either side of a trip to Svalbard, and it was absolutely ideal for what we needed. Great location, just a five minute walk from the centre of town. Cosy, clean and comfortable rooms, and very straightforward checkin procedure with door codes delivered by email/text in advance. Nice living room area and well-equipped kitchen with free tea/coffee/hot chocolate etc.

We didn’t stay at the Ami Hotel, but booked an intimate trip for 5, to hunt for the Aurora. Pick up and drop off either outside the Ami Hotel. On arrival at the hotel we were given warm clothing and boots. Our driver and guide, Sarah, was great, originally from Wales, she was very knowledgeable and told us interesting tales of Norwegian folklore, talked about the different locations that she’d travelled to for great views of the ‘lights’. She was very friendly, and brought fold up chairs to have hot drinks, sausages to toast around a firepit and also doughnuts. Sarah drove us to a few spots and saw the wonder of the ‘Northern Lights’. She also took photos of our group which were great. I would definitely recommend this tour.

This place offers quiet and clean accomodation near the city centre. The management, in particular Sarah, is doing everything to make guests feel comfortable and find flexible solutions for short-term changes. Very well equipped kitchen and comfortable common room. All in all best value for money.

Arnt and Anette were great hosts. Free coffee, hot chocolate and tea. No elevator/lift but they helped us with our luggages up the stairs. We also booked the Northern Lights Tour with them and we came home happy having seen a glimpse of Aurora Borealis. So worth it!

I picked AMI to stay at mainly as it was such good value compared to its neighbouring hotels; I usually stay in hostels when I travel and this was the closest I could find to one in Tromsø. The guest kitchen is hugely in keeping with that and definitely helped keep costs down - as did their breakfast buffet, which I found more than ample to keep me going through til the evening. They have a nice honesty system with any snacks outside of the breakfast buffet. I also loved that they let you have hot drinks all day and night and even encourage you to fill a thermos if you like - I spent many a happy night cosying up in my room with a flask of hot chocomilk after long cold hours outside in the snow!

The hotel's communication via email when booking/changing dates was prompt and friendly and very helpful. I had exactly the same service when I arrived there. Each of the girls working there was very kind toward me (I was travelling alone and quite poorly my last few days there) and really made me feel looked after. They do a fantastic job of keeping the hotel very clean whilst ensuring it also has plenty of character.

I had a double room my first night, and then (after spending a night in a lavvu) a single room for the rest of my stay - both with shared bathrooms. Both rooms were lovely - and it's fab that they charge a per person rather than per room rate, so I was able to pay the same for my night in a double as I did each of my nights in a single. The single bed was wider than most singles so was very comfortable, and I was quickly given an extra pillow when requested. I could hear a fair amount of moving around and hair drying going on from the room above but I think this is to be expected in a traditional wooden building, and I had ear plugs with me! Both rooms had two armchairs and two tables so I had plenty of room to set up home in, a large fridge in each, and a small sink in each too which is always handy. The toilet was small but did the job, and the shower had plenty of room although was a little on the plain side. I noticed they had a bottle of shampoo out for any guests who may have neglected to bring their own which was a thoughtful touch.

The communal areas were comfortable with lots of seating and nice low lighting. They had daily newspapers which I discovered to my delight had Su Doku puzzles in them! The girls were very happy to let me chill on a sofa doing a puzzle whilst they cleaned around me, there was no hint of being in the way, I was made to feel very welcome. They also have a computer with internet access; luckily I brought my own laptop with me (they also provide free WiFi!) as during the week I was there one or two people in particular seemed to hog the computer pretty much all the time!

The location of AMI is so so I would say; mainly brilliant as close enough to everything (Tromsø's not exactly a massive town but still, not much more than a 10/15min walk to most places was pretty good), but it is at the top of a very steep hill, which can be tricky to negotiate getting up and down in several feet of snow and particularly so when it gets icy! This never really caused a problem though, and the one time I didn't feel able to drag myself back up the hill I jumped in a taxi - not cheap cos nothing is in Norway, but not the end of the world! The location did mean that I got a taxi from the airport rather than the cheaper shuttle bus though as I knew I wouldn't be able to manage pulling a heavy suitcase up the hill. Another nice touch from AMI - they have small sledges inside the reception area/hallway for anyone to take out and have fun in the snow with, and that hill definitely looked perfect for that!

I used (and recommend):

Guide Gunnar for aurora chasing (he gets booked up very early, costs slightly more and is definitely worth it - I was one of only three people in the hotel the whole week I was there that got to see the lights, as most people went with cheaper guides who wouldn't stay out the extra hours required - we crossed the border into Finland and didn't get back til 3am, and it was worth every cold second!).

Villmarkssenter for husky sledding/overnight stay in lavvu (you have to keep your own fire going if you sleep over unlike with some other places, but actually this added to the experience; plus the staff were really friendly and the two reindeer dishes I had there were seriously tasty!).

Arctic Pathfinder for cruise from Skjervoy back to Tromsø (can be booked online prior to trip - check details in Tromsø winter activities brochure - or in person at the Trafikktriangel at the coach station; I had to go collect my tickets in person as they weren't delivered to my hotel as promised, but was right next to where the bus left from anyway. 4hr bus journey through Lyngen Alps - although a little dark in late January to fully appreciate the sights - and on two ferries, and then return journey on a Hurtigruten cruise ship. The description of "coastal steamer" had me thinking it would be a quite basic ferry-type vessel but was actually rather plush Titanic-style cruise, complete with hot tubs on deck!).

I stayed for four nights in March 2006. Although it was freezing cold outside, the hotel was always warm.

Breakfast was fab 3 out of 4 days, buffet style eat-as-much-as-you-want, however it was very busy on the Saturday and the food was a bit scarce, though I think it was more to do with the large parties of other guests with poorer manners than ourselves who were hogging all the food. Please note: it is not polite to take the entire basket of eggs and put them on your table when other guests would also like eggs!

The only other thing which I found quite annoying is that the reception never seemed to be manned, so when it came to checking in or out it took a while for somebody to appear.

All in all though, it was a fabulous place, and very cheap. Five minutes from city centre. Well worth it.

We stayed here for 3 nights at the start of February 2012. The hotel is located on top of a small hill from the high street in Tromso. To get here from the airport, there are several options - airport bus (60 NOK), local bus 40 or 42 (26 NOK) or a taxi (120 - 150 NOK). We took bus 42 to the high street and then changed to bus 40 which dropped us few metres from the hotel. The hill top location means you have higher chance of seeing northern lights. In fact, the first excellent northern lights viewing we had was right on hotel's doorstep.

The rooms are basic but sufficient and are cleaned daily. They are well heated and there is plenty of hot water in the shower. We stayed in #36 on the top floor and found it to be really good. There is also a small refrigerator in the room. The best thing about the hotel is the common room/lounge with self service kitchen. The lounge has free PC and printer that the guests can use 24 hours. There is also a wifi in the hotel which had good strength right to the top floor. The self service kitchen can be used by hotel guests to prepare simple meals. We only used the microwave to heat pre-prepared food but I can see the use of kitchen as eating out is very expensive in Tromso.

The hotel also provides great continental breakfast which we enjoyed every morning. In fact, on the last day we offered to buy some breakfast items for a packed lunch but the hotel owner encouraged us to just pack what we wanted. Very generous.

Finally, the hotel is the cheapest option in Tromso so unless you are looking for five star luxury at five star prices I 100% recommend AMI Hotel for all travellers to Tromso for a home like stay.

We can also recommend:

(1) Arctic Guide Service for Northern Lights chase. They leave from Rica Ishavshotel at 18.30 every day. They were great and we saw so much lights with them. Their northern lights chase last 7+ hours and is excellent value for money 850NOK per person.

(2) Round Trip by Bus and Hurtigruten ship. This trip can be booked at the Cominor office in downtown Tromso. The trip starts at 14.10 or 16.00 depending on which time you choose and take you to an island north of Tromso from where you board the Hurtigruten cruise ship back to Tromso. Good way of seeing the countryside and getting an arctic cruise experience. 600 NOK per person.

(3) Polaria Museum: We visited this museum on the last day in Tromso and found it to be very informative with excellent displays and amusing bearded seals.

(4) Ersfjordbotn: This place on the Kavloya island is about half an hour by bus 42 and then 425 from Tromso. It is a very scenic place to visit and don't miss the cafe on the pier at Ersfjord. It has to be the most popular cafe in the whole of arctic.

Enjoy Arctic Tromso.

We stayed here with a family group of adults for a long weekend when we hoped to see the Northern Lights. The Hotel used to be a training school and is well organised to make the stay as easy as possible for travellers. The rooms vary, ours was small and cramped but others were bigger. No matter really 'cos all we did in our rooms was sleep and get dressed etc. The main thing is they were clean and warm. Downstairs the communal areas included a comfy lounge with TV and internet, an adjoining dinng area and use of an extremely well equippped kitchen. Eating out is very expensive here so we were pleased to be able to buy pasta and stuff from the local store and get a decent meal every day without breaking the bank. The location couldn;t be better, town centre was a 5 minute walk away and being on top of a hill the views are good. The staff were very friendly and the atmosphere was great with travellers chatting to each other and passing on tips about what to do, where to go etc. We tried two trips for the Northern Lights. We didn't rate the Northern Lights Bus at all. We felt cheated 'cos the driver made it obvious he didn't expect to see the lights that night yet didn't call it off and refund our money. So we paid £65 each to sit on a bus for a 4 hour round trip. When we got to our destiantion we got off the bus and stood for less than 20 minutes before he said no lights tonight, time to go. We didn't even get the promised hot drink and biscuits! None of the 16 passengers that night were impressed. Two nights later we tried the (www.lyngsfjord.com) dog sledding trip. It was amazing fun and the Northern Lights showed themselves to us at the end of a fantastic adrenalin fuelled ride. The Samis looked after us and fed us and gave us a night to remember for the rest of our lives. Worth every penny. Don't miss the cable car, spectacular views at the top.

We stayed here one night in December and we really enjoyed our stay. The hotel is situated at the top of a park overlooking the city center, which is approximatly 5 minutes on foot. The hotel was very clean. We chose a room without shower and toilet because it was cheaper this way and the shower and toilet in the hall were clean and in good condition. The common rooms were also very nice, decorated for christmas with a computer and internet that you could use. Breakfast was included in the price but during the day or night you could make yourself tea or coffee free of charge. There was also a kitchen which you could use is you wanted to cook. It was also no problem to leave our luggage there till the evening after we checked out.
