My wife and I stayed for a couple nights as a romantic getaway by the sea. What can I say? It was fabulous.

Pros: Matt couldn't have been more welcoming, offering local insights and dinner recommendations.
The staff were friendly and helpful, holding the old fashioned, beautiful lift doors for us and escorting us to our room on arrival where the TV had been set with a scenic picture and music for ambiance (it's the little things). The room was clean and spacious with thick, soft, carpet, a huge sofa, and a large desk and ornate looking chair that made me think it would make a pleasant writer's retreat - already finding excuses to return. The bathroom was wonderfully large with marble flooring, with plenty of storage space for all my wife's accessories. I appreciated the small details
-coat hangers that come off the rail, complimentary bottles of water by the bed and in the bathroom, Netflix profiles that helped me quickly find something to watch, smooth glide curtains and windows I could open when I wanted some fresh air. The view was great for a side-facing window too.

Petty Cons: The mattress was a bit too soft for my old bones. My wife thought it was comfortable. The breakfast was a bit overpriced, but there was a vegan full English option for my wife and my omelette was delicious.

The hotel's location was ideal for finding somewhere to eat, the shops, the beach, and for coastal trails for walkers. We walked up the cliffs to Beachy Head for a pint on the South Downs and to take in some breathtaking views.
We would definitely stay again.

We stayed at the Chatsworth for a short break of several nights recently and enjoyed every minute. We had a side sea view room, which was very spacious and the bed huge (and very comfortable). The view was great, even from the side.  We didn't feel like we were missing out at all. The window is a large bay so you can really get a great view out from the seating at the window. Huge TV in the room and everything very clean and stylish, also heard very little noise at all, which was great, it felt very self contained. The bathroom was probably the biggest hotel bathroom I've ever seen! It had an amazing walk in shower and double sinks. The hotel is very fresh and clean throughout, the breakfast was great and the staff were all extremely friendly and helpful at all times of the day. Really enjoyed our stay, it gave us a real break from the everyday world and would love to visit again soon.

Me and my partner had the best visit to the ‘Chatsworth’. It was a last minute night away and we honestly could not of picked a better hotel!!

On arrival the gentleman behind reception could not of been more welcoming ‘upgrading us to the junior suite’, we could not believe it the rooms are absolutely gorgeous , with marble bathrooms and jacuzzi bath tubs, it was luxury!

They are currently in process still and only thing not available was the restaurant for dinner service but they were still offering room service!!!
which was no problem at all for us as ‘Ed’ so kindly directed us to such a lovey restaurant ‘bistro’ down the road and made a booking for us!

Further more we had the best nights sleep and service at breakfast was also exceptional . A lovely young Lady walked to the shop to get white bread even though it wasn’t on the menu!

There’s is not a single thing I could suggest for improvement!!! The best hotel and service!!

We Will be returning and can not wait!
See you very soon!!

Sophie

Last w/e was our Golden wedding anniversary, we booked an executive double room with seaviews after reading reviews on this site. On arrival we found that the lift was broken. I had booked a couple of months ago and phoned to checked that there was a lift as my wife has difficulty with stairs. I was told by reception there was. A phone call/email would have helped, we would have been able to re-book elsewhere.
The room was spacious and airy with fantastic sea views and an extremely comfortable bed.
Although the shower was adequate, the shower head was leaking out water from the pipe joint onto the tiled floor making it dangerous to walk on.
On returning from a day looking around Eastbourne we found no sign that housekeeping had been in, I informed reception, they said they would sort it when we went out in the evening. We went out at 1900 hrs, and when we returned the bed had been made, but the bath didn't appear to have been cleaned and not all the toiletries were replenished.
There were also some minor faults, unpainted wood at ends of skirting boards, black scuff marks on doors, no decaff t-bags all minor things but not acceptable for a 5 * hotel and for the cost of this room I would expect far better. To be fair the manager has sent an apology and gave a % refund.

Booked the junior suite for a night away with my fiancée. Everything was good to start with the room was very nice and very big. Things then took a turn for the worse after paying premium rate for the room it came with a jacuzzi bath when switching on a load of black grime came out of the nozzles and we noticed it appeared to not have gone through any type of cleaning regime. We complained to front of house which in fairness she got someone to clean it when we went out for dinner. The breakfast was good and again customer service very good. Overall the stay was ok just left disappointed about the issue previously stated as when your paying this type of money you want everything to be as close to perfect as possible.

We stayed for 2 nights in October celebrating an anniversary.

The review is based on this hotel being a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of The World (SLH) marketing group, the standards for which we are familiar with.

Location is directly across the main road from the seafront and a short walk away from a variety of restaurants. Theatre , and shopping centre are all within reasonable walking distance.

Wonderfully classic old building, but with a very drab, uninviting and untypical entrance door.

Parking (pay) either on the roadway opposite or nearby NCP multi story. Staff helpful in organising the ‘pay App’ for us without us having the PT of doing it ourselves. Rider to the street parking is that during the busy months it may be difficult to find a spot opposite.

Friendly staff.

The evocative caged vintage lift was not working, so anyone with restricted mobility may have a problem.

Kindly upgraded to a Junior Suite (with complimentary Prosecco) which was clean and very spacious with a double aspect overlooking the sea. Slight downside was some traffic noise. Very comfortable Super King sized bed with excellent linen. Huge marble bathroom with a spa bath large enough to hold a party in. Good shower pressure. No bath robes supplied. Large TV with Netflix etc for those so inclined. However, there was no facility for ‘Madame’ to sit with a mirror and hairdryer. As would be expected of a SLH property, a Nespresso machine was provided.

The interior of the hotel has been remodelled to a ‘boutique’ style. It’s a matter of personal taste, but was too minimalist and bland for our liking, apart from the breakfast room which was quirkily decorated. The term breakfast room has been used as the restaurant was disappointingly not functioning. Room service meals are offered with an Italian bias - perhaps not surprising given the number of Italian restaurants in the vicinity. The cooked to order breakfast was excellent.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, but would have graded the hotel average by SLH standards had it not been for the excellent value afforded by our booked sea view room.

Absolutely gorgeous property with impeccable sea views. Service is attentive, warm yet non intrusive. We booked a junior suite which was well appointed and incredibly spacious - super king size bed, cosy seating area, and an absolute ballroom of a bathroom with built in jacuzzi and rain shower. We stayed in room 201. The staff really makes this hotel a "home away from home".

On entry, apart from the staff who are not to be faulted, there is no real "wow" factor. The lobby area is a bit understated for a Small Leading Hotel of the World. Check in was warm and friendly, we were whisked away to our room in no time but no real tour was given of the room or additional information provided about amenities / facilities of the hotel. The bar is virtually non existent - throughout our entire stay, nobody was ever in there and couldn't really tell if it was even open. There is nowhere inviting to have a little nightcap at the hotel after a night out, or a pre-dinner drink.

For the price we paid for the room (£500 / night), you would expect bathrobes and coffee/tea facilities to be topped up every day. In addition, the seating area was cosy but upon closer inspection the sofa was stained. Having Apple TV in the room is a nice touch but not intuitive to operate and we couldn't figure out how to watch satellite TV (and we are millennials!)

However, we would gladly return!

My mother and her friend were booked to stay here by her friend's daughter, after she had read the reviews. Both my mother and her friend have recently been widowed and this break was to help them come to terms with life moving forward on their own. The anxiety of just taking this break without their husbands was extreme, so to arrive to receive sub-standard service and accommodation was deeply upsetting for them. What they found in just a few hours was the following:

• Booked sea view – they had no sea view unless they were to break their necks at the edge of the window
• Room very small
• No mini fridge in room as expected
• There was no wardrobe, just a recess with a hanging rail
• Bathroom had been refurbished but room was very worn
• Ordered tuna melt for lunch – when it arrived, the bread was OK but the tuna, cheese and sweetcorn were frozen solid. When they informed the waitress, she said they could have some crisps instead
• When they asked to book a table for that evening, they were told they could only have room service. When they mentioned there was no table in the room so they would have to sit on the bed, the person shrugged
• The sliding doors to the lift were very stiff. It took both of them to open them. They were frightened one of them would get their fingers trapped.
• When they said they were leaving, no-one asked why or what they could do to help
• A man came up to them when they were outside and told them they owed £16.50. They asked what for and he said for the time they’d been there. They said they weren’t paying and he said he would stop them from leaving if they didn’t pay, so they paid what they thought was £16.50. To my mother's horror, a month later she saw she had been charged £1,600 for the whole week!

On emailing the hotel once we'd realised, George Roseman's response was cold and uncaring ...

"I personally took the booking over the phone and discussed all details and we also sent your mother a booking confirmation email detailing the size of the room and the room type. To confirm, we don’t have rooms with a balcony as our website will confirm.

Being in Eastbourne, the majority of our gusts are of a similar age and as you can see by our online reviews, we ALWAYS go out of our way to look after our guests and always go the extra mile. We succeed in delivery a quality of service that not many other hotels can match.

I am sorry your mum chose to leave early but we delivered exactly what we promised and turned business away to honour what we agreed.

We can still keep the unused days as credit for anyone she nominates which is not a standard practice in the industry."

He didn't address any of the issues at all, and considered giving credit so we could use the unused days at Eastbourne's equivalent to Fawlty Towers another time as a goodwill gesture!

This was a very expensive and upsetting experience for 2 ladies who had been through so much the last couple of years. They had no confidence going away by themselves before this, after always having their beloved husbands with them. How they will gain any confidence to go away in the future, I have no idea, after such a distressing experience.

This was my second stay here and it was just as great as my first one a year ago.
I booked a partial sea view room and as you can see from the photo the view from the large bay window was exquisite.
The room was large and beautifully decorated and the huge ensuite had a separate bath and shower.
I was made to feel very welcome and enjoyed the delicious full English breakfast when I woke up fully refreshed from a good night’s sleep in the very comfortable oversized bed.
I would highly recommend staying here and I look forward to returning soon. Thank you!

I really enjoyed my stay at the Chatsworth hotel. The reception area is spacious and welcoming, and the staff could not be more friendly and helpful. The general ambience of the public areas in the hotel is peaceful and relaxed. It has a nice calming feel, which is perfect when staying away on a business trip. There is a slight art deco feel to the hotel lobby area, mainly due to a quaint but perfectly functioning lift, complete with a seat. The bedrooms were large and incredibly comfortable. Decorated in pale grey & white, they too made you feel relaxed and calm. Breakfast was plentiful and very enjoyable - even the toaster was set at the perfect toasting level - it's as if they knew! My single only, hardly want to mention it, complaint would be that there was a very small stain on my hand towel in the bathroom - a sin I am more than prepared to overlook and would definitely stay here again.
