Just returned from the best weekend at Retreat east and spent two nights in the Cow Barn.

We travelled from london on the train, smooth easy journey. London Liverpool Street to Ipswich station, on an off peak ticket which is from around 11:30am £50 return. Once you arrive at Ipswich station there is lots of taxis outside, the driver knew exactly where we were going and the journey in the taxi cost around £18.
Very smooth check in upon arrival.
Check in time is usually 15:00 but we arrived early and was able to check in around 14:00.
We were blown away by how beautiful our barn was!
Everything is done to such a high spec, the furniture, welcome pack, kitchen fully kitted out for everything you’d need to cook that weekend.
When you walk into the house you’re hit by the luxurious smell of roses.

We had a late lunch that day in the main restaurant, the portions were huge and delicious.

The next day we woke up early for our treatments, I had 60 minute muscle melt massage and 45 min foot and leg. Amazing!
Felt so relaxed when it was over.

The grounds and woodland are just amazing! Acres and acres to explore. We even saw a white stag!

Had a couple of issues with the water temp in our room being too cold but this was sorted straight away by their lovely maintenance man Stuart. Stuart also gave us loads of info on local towns and things outside of the retreat that you can do. Super helpful.

We spent two nights here and was sad we hadn’t booked for longer.
It’s worth every penny.

A few very minor suggestions would be; given the fact it’s a spa hotel the slippers provided should be slightly better quality than the one wear wonders we had.
The fruit with breakfast could be more of a platter as opposed to your standard apple and banana.

Hi Donya123, Thanks for taking the time to write such a comprehensive and positive review. I look forward to sharing this with the team. It's great that you managed to see the White stag, there aren't many people that can claim to have seen him. (I have too) We have noted your comments on the fruit; we currently serve the fruit in this way due to covid restrictions, we will hover look at alternative options. We look forward to welcoming you back. Best Wishes Leyton

We staying in a couple of the newer, very smart and well kitted out barn style houses. Rooms were decorated in a very fashionable soho house type style with excellent bathrooms and kitchens. We really liked the set up where you could choose to self cater some nights and others eat some lovely local produce in the big central barn. The grounds were lovely and the gardener showed us around the garden kitchen. The staff were very helpful and tolerant of our toddler running laps of the bar on occasion! It was well suited to families taking a break but also there was enough space to yourself that I would recommend for romantic weekends too. There are some lovely local walks and we took trips to the coast and to Jimmys Farm down the road.

We’ve just spent 3 nights at Retreat East and we weren’t ready to leave. We stayed in the 2 bedroom Burrow accommodation, so we had plenty of space and felt very relaxed. Everything is done to a very high standard and they are all working very hard to make things feel as normal as possible but still making you feel safe in these crazy times. Unfortunately the clay pigeon shooting, pony trekking and picking produce from the gardens are all currently off limits, but again it’s a very weird time. There’s plenty to see and do in the surrounding areas anyways, or you’ll be happy just relaxing in your beautiful lodge. It’s extremely quiet and peaceful and everyone seems very respectful of this.

The parking is a bit a way from the barns but you can drop your stuff off outside and every day walking back from the car we saw woodpeckers, so that’s a nice bonus.
If you do visit I’d highly recommend bringing evening entertainment for yourselves (we brought a couple of board games and a games console and another recommendation is to go visit Kersey- the most beautiful village only a short drive away.

We’re booked in for November as well so fingers crossed everything will be a bit more normal by then. We can’t wait to return.

Hey Thea, Many thanks for the positive review, we are delighted you enjoyed your stay, the Burrow is a very popular barn. Unfortunately, the clay pigeon shooting and horse riding have to remain closed due to social distancing. Our board games have also been put into storage as we are unable to sanitise them in a safe way. By November we are hoping everything will be available for you to use. We look forward to seeing you then. Best Wishes Leyton Williams

We had such a lovely time at Retreat East! We took advantage of their 3 nights for two offer which was running for the month of January. We had initially booked the little hive which we spent one night in, it was lovely so cosy and perfect for two people. Due to building works taking place on site (they’re putting up a lovely new cabin) we had mentioned to reception that the noise was bothering us a little and they couldn’t have been nicer about it, offered to move us into the farmhouse so we could relax in a quieter setting! It was so generous and they went above and beyond to make our stay as lovely as possible. We dined in the great barn twice for dinner and once for lunch, I being gluten free was pleasantly surprised by the amount of dishes that I could have which were already identified on the menu for me. The dinner menu is quite pricey but the food is delicious and we did feel it was worth the money! The lunch deal of 2 courses for £20 was also great! We had continental breakfast included in our booking which was great as you could go anytime between 7am and 11am leaving lots of time to have it when we wanted. The offering was great but found the gluten free options were quite limited, as my boyfriend enjoyed croissants, pan au chocolate, toast and granola, there was only toast offered as gluten free and then later cornflakes too. But the other items such as fruit salad and yoghurt with berries were enough to keep me satisfied. We took advantage of the spa facilities including the hot tub which was lovely in the cold crisp winter air. The spa itself was quite basic but very nice that it was reserved just for us during our allotted time. The space could do with having a day bed or lounger to relax on in between sauna and steam room but was lovely all the same. There were always fresh robes waiting for us when we went in and the staff were very attentive. We hired bikes one day which then ended up being included free of charge and the staff at reception we’re so helpful in identifying routes we could do on the bikes. We wanted to give a special mention to Stuart, the maintenance man who helped us with a few things during our stay, he was so friendly and enthusiastic each time, was lovely to see his smiling face around the retreat throughout our stay! Having been lucky enough to experience the self catering option here we would definitely look to come back with a group of friends or family during summer and enjoy the cabins and beautiful Suffolk countryside a bit more.

I had been looking forward to this for a while and was overall underwhelmed.

The staff are all very friendly and helpful.

The evening meal was just ok, the breakfast was very nice, as were the lunch options.

Our room was one of the ‘Littles’ attached to a larger barn, and we could hear everything next door, it’s quite bad. So worth bearing in mind if you are looking for peace and quiet and/ or uninterrupted sleep, don’t book a ‘Little’ room. The price is quite low for those rooms compared to the other accommodation options and I’d say that’s a big reason why but they should come with a gentle warning, and some ear plugs. This put a dampener on the trip.

The room itself is nice enough, and it was very clean.

The bike rental is very expensive, it rained nearly the whole time we were there, so we only used the bikes for 30mins in between rain showers, but still paid £30 for two bikes. I think this should be included or no more that £5 per bike. It did look like no one else was using them so maybe a lower pice point or a price based on length of rental would help.

The spa area is nice enough, again really thin walls so my masseuse who was very good and really nice would whisper but the therapist next door was talking full volume, I could hear nearly every word. It definitely took away from the experience, so something to consider. But the masseuse was nice and good.

Considering it’s a lovely looking place with friendly staff, there really is no atmosphere. The bar area has a super loud buzzing sound that must be a fridge or something, it feels more like a staff service area. The great barn is super echoey, so it’s overall lacking something that would make the place feel a bit cosier or inviting.

To end on a positive note, the communication before I arrived was really great. Every question I had was answered super promptly and politely.

Hi Jennifer, Many thanks for taking the time to write such a comprehensive review. We are sorry that you felt your stay was just ok, that's not what we strive to achieve. I will pass on your positive feedback to both the cleaning and reception team, they will appreciate the positive feedback. I have refunded the cost of the bike hire, we apologise that the usual Sunny Suffolk Skys weren't on show during your trip, if you would have mentioned this on check the team would have refunded you without question. If you ever would like to come back please feel free to drop me a message we can arrange for you to stay in a more suitable barn. Best Wishes Leyton

My husband And I Recently married and looked for the perfect honeymoon in the UK to celebrate the occasion - with months of research and deliberation we choose the east retreat, for the cost of it we expect luxury sanctuary and 5 star service …. How wrong could I be.
We stayed 2 nights in total (2 nights 2 bloody long) On check in the staff where rude and dismissive which was a
common theme for the trip through out the hotel !!
when we where asking simple questions and advice on the area and facilities of the hotel - they acted like they had better places to be (like watching tick toks on the front desk how unprofessional)
The rooms where substandard and basic (nothing like the pictures) rooms where dated , dirty with black mould in areas… clear lack of attention to detail.
We needed clean towels in the evening as they had been missed during the day and waited 2 hours for the simple request even though we chased a number of times.
Beds leave very little to be desired , don’t expect comfort or a good nights sleep !
Thinking dinner would give us the wow factor , being veggie asking for simple amendments to my meal was a problem with no flexability on my dietary requirements (not the attitude you would expect based on the price of the place) - the food was cold when arrived and having to wait and hour for dinner left us hungry and frustrated .., when asking to speak to the manager was told she was busy and would come see us when free … no contact was ever made !!
I feel deflated and under whelmed based on the
Extortionate price … there are much better luxury retreats in the uk that we have visited … my advise save your money and don’t stay here !!!!

My husband and I were so looking forward to staying at the Retreat East it having been postponed from earlier in the year and we were not disappointed. From the moment we arrived the staff were helpful, friendly and welcoming and we were well looked after for the 2 nights we stayed. We stayed in The Nook which was beautiful, very well presented with high quality furnishings and all the mod cons. There are a couple of things that could be improved in the barn. The kitchen is a little lacking in equipment so even for the 2 of us, making a cooked breakfast needed careful planning so we could get all the food ready at the same time. A couple more saucepans, a mixing bowl, and even a slotted spoon would have helped. Also, we found the bed very hard and uncomfortable which was a shame as it was obviously excellent quality and the linen was lovely, this is a matter of taste though and we just prefer a softer mattress. Otherwise the barn is lovely with a smart TV, comfy sofa, bathrobes and slippers.
We had a massage in the spa area which was very relaxing and again the staff were great, we felt very Covid safe and were able to reserve the hot tub and sauna just for us.
Dinner in the Great Barn was delicious with a good choice of dishes, a lovely atmosphere with candles and an open fire. We didn't visit the bar but there looked to be a great selection of drinks and a pool table available.
Continental breakfast was included which was basic (due to restrictions I expect) but good quality, however a cooked breakfast was extra and at £14 seemed pricy, especially for a vegan offering.
Overall we had a wonderful stay and will definitely be going back!

Just returning from a fabulous weekend at Retreat East which really is a hidden gem!

We had a 2 bedroom upside down barn which we shared with our daughter and her fiancé and all our dogs. We were doing recce’s for a venue for their wedding.... we weren’t disappointed! The staff are all very friendly and very helpful but in a relaxed way.... dinner was really good and local produce really is used. This included English wines. Food was excellent and it really was a menu where you couldn’t decide what to have as although not a vast menu the choices were all very tempting with good vegan options.

My husband and I both enjoyed stone massages amazing!! The dogs all had a great time with lovely walks in the grounds and neighbouring fields and woods followed by a wash in the doggie wash!

Can’t wait to go back and very happy to recommend.

My stay was a re-book from a double booking error last year & I was generously compensated for the mistake with a dinner and extra spa treatments added to my stay in The Piggery. The food was excellent and serving staff wonderful. My massage and facial were fantastic and I must highlight Abbie for her high quality facial and overall immensely caring nature as a spa therapist.

The Piggery was perfect for us as a couple with our dog. I loved the large bathtub and wood burner. I also enjoyed the tranquil nature around us we had no problems with hearing other guests.

There are a few things we feel could be improved. There were no coat hooks or a coat stand in The Piggery and with the nature of dog walking it would have been helpful to have been able to hang up wet jackets/leads. This was the same issue in the bathroom with no where to hang dressing gowns or towels apart from a radiator set behind the bathtub and not easily accessible or able to hold all of the items. The kitchen was also set up with only 2 of everything (Possibly a covid measure?) but it didn’t exactly scream luxury to have two forks and dog food to prepare as well as eat ourselves!

The dog friendly nature of Retreat East was a definite selling point for us, but there were no dog waste bins either at our property or the general grounds.

The free dinner was also something that I had to explain to the waiting staff on the night we ate, when they gave us the full bill. They then checked and realised the error but when I came to settle our bill as we checked out, again the full cost of dinner was on there.

Overall we really enjoyed our stay and would definitely come back again. The measures for Covid-19 were robust and impressive and the big fire on the great barn lovely to sit at and relax!

For future information, dog waste bins are situated next to the dog spa. We look forward to welcoming you back. Thanks Leyton

Having been to RE at its inception several years ago I was delighted to visit as a guest this past weekend & to discover that the original ethos & design, service & quality that had been envisaged at the beginning has not only been maintained but has blossomed and grown into a very unique experience. I hadn't realised quite how much I needed the break until I walked into the Great Barn to check in and I felt the stress of past weeks simply fall from my shoulders. The feeling was palpable & at first I couldn't quite put my finger on whether it was the wonderful Suffolk countryside, the decor, the staff or the apparent remoteness of the location. I soon realised that there was no one defining thing, rather it was a combination of all of the above and more. This is what makes RE so unique, so special. The feeling one gets is of a family, all individuals, working together to make your stay in their "home" as special as it can possibly be. The staff, many of them young university students really "own" both their roles and the space and this sense of well being amongst them all, rolls out like a comforting duvet and wraps around you for the whole time you are with them. If I could give 6* I would, and I'll certainly be back and recommending RE to everyone I know.

tsl1969, Unfortunately we do not have facilities for children as we operate as an adult retreat and a relaxation spa. In regards to the restaurant - currently we offer food for brunch and dinner Friday evening through to Monday morning, however all our barns have kitchens with appliances to cook in your own barn. We do offer an In-Barn menu for you to choose chef prepared meals in your barn to take the stress out of cooking. Please call us on for more information. Many thanks Ben
