The location is a short walk (five minutes) from Darlington railway station so you save on taxi fares for a start. Pitch your expectations realistically and you won't be disappointed. To begin with the road that its on is decidedly urban with takeaways interspersed with dress shops and barbers. Late night noise from street users can be a nuisance if you're in a room facing the street so bring earplugs if sensitive to that kind of thing. Soundproofing from other rooms was also not the best.

The room provided one of the best showers I've experienced in a long time, a comfortable layout and an extremely welcome and much needed courtesy tray with tea and coffee. Also useful was the stand-alone fan and the double bed was soft and comfy.

Biggest criticism was the inability to draw blinds or curtains fully. This left me more "exposed" to light and to the street (!) than I wanted. A blind instead of just frosted glass in the bathroom would be welcome and blinds that fully close in the bedroom too, please.

It was an unobtrusive stay, with free wi-fi and I never saw anyone who ran it apart from a young lady behind the bar when I arrived. Oh, and another plus, they let me check in two hours before the usual time with no penality and that was much appreciated.

Not a bad option if you want to be central but don't want to fork out unrealistic prices.

This place appears to have had a refurb since most of the photos were taken. It is very well appointed and comfortable. I'm not quite sure how they have done it, but is certainly as good as good as the nearby Premier Inn, but at a fraction of the price.

Okay it may not look salubrious from the outside, but the rooms are amazing. Definitely worth a trip, and I will use this place again without any qualms.

We saw this while walking around the train station. The outside looks better than the photos, the inside is spotless and refurbed.
Cheap drinks but brilliant staff, friendly clientele and clean toilets. What more do you want?

Excellent stay here, never been to Darlington and was coming down to do the park run at South Park on route to Northallerton to visit a friend, always get anxious going places solo but the staff here are very welcoming and friendly, was in room 10 at the top (penthouse) spacious clean room with everything you need.
Sat in the bar for food had a cheeseburger topped with onion rings for £5 was very tasty. Bar staff friendly and made sure I had everything I needed
Thank you for a lovely stay

stayed here for an overnight, granted, not in the best area and above a pub with lots of stairs and no lift!
however, I found the room pleasant and contemporary, a comfortable bed and clean.
Sadly no working side lamps by my bed and the area to hang your clothing was in the bathroom next to the toilet, odd, guess space in an attic room limited, however, i worry odours .
Overall very good value, close to the station and places to eat and clean.

Very good value hotel. Clean and everything works well. Close to the station and a great alternative to staying in Newcastle's over priced hotels at weekends.

Very friendly staff, who were also quick in answering emails and very helpful when I had a potential problem with my booking.

Highly recommended. 10/10

Refused service based on employment with armed forces. Having previously been a manager within the hospitality industry I find this disgusting and would there for avoid the place like the plague. I would also like to advise the management team that this form of discrimination can have a massive effect on business and would recommend they change their attitude.

Response from ian v, Owner at The Dalesman Hotel
Responded 16 Sept 2015
Can I just point out that we do accept armed forces. However we don't accept armed forces trainees simply because they have destroyed the rooms previously. They have no respect for anything when they are drunk. Its not a decision that I made over night it was after having month after month of destruction I stopped them staying in the hotel. I have spent a fortune on the hotel since, putting it right to keep the rooms spotless for people that respect the rooms. I'm sure that you will know what I mean as you say you were a manager in the hospitality industry. Sincere apologies that this have offended you. But after years of trouble this was the decision I had to take Thank you Ian

Ian and his staff could not be faulted, they made us very welcome, the food was excellent and the room clean, we would highly recommend the hotel as a base in the area as it is close to Darlington Railway station.

I booked this hotel on the strength of the prior reviews and positive emails with Ian - a very helpful fellow. The entry is through the sparsely furnished bar, where the all-male patronage seemed surprised to see two ladies enter. We negotiated the narrow staircase, past bags of garbage still in the hall at 3pm, to our room, not quite ready for us. The carpets were still damp from the cleaning they'd received that morning, leading us to wonder what kind of emergency necessitated a shampoo on the day we were to arrive. Beds and bedding, while appearing clean, were quite old. There is nothing modern about this place. It is in desperate need of an upgrade - or perhaps some honesty in advertising to let folks know it's not the sort of place you want to bring your Mom. I was expecting old with character but not the sort of character that implies rooms rented by the hour. We quietly retreated to a new, characterless hotel around the corner.
