Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We celebrated our fortieth birthday party yesterday at the hotel, in their upstairs function room. I was a little bit wary to begin with because I'd seen a few bad reviews on here but I asked the events manager (Layla) about this when we came to look round. She explained that someone else had been organising the events at the hotel previously, but the hotel and No Manches were taking over the events organisation and she would make sure we were pleased. She was absolutely right. From the planning and organisation to the party on the night, nothing was too much trouble for them. All dietary needs were catered for in an extremely thoughtful and caring way, which was particularly important because one of our guests has coeliac disease. The food on the night was lovely and there was loads of it. Guests commented on how nice the food was, which was great to hear. The room had been dressed beautifully when we arrived and they'd put chair covers and cloths on the tables like they would for a wedding. When we arrived and the table layout wasn't quite what we had expected, the staff were so helpful and made changes immediately with no fuss so that it was all sorted before the guests started arriving. Nothing was too much trouble and every member of staff was accommodating and friendly. One member of staff even helped us out to the car with our gifts and they were calling out "Happy birthday" to us as we were leaving. I would recommend York House Hotel for events, they were brilliant!

The room it's self was great. Super comfy bed and great location. When booking, the website said "all rooms include breakfast" no food is available on site at all let alone breakfast. When asking the receptionist about this I was simply told "no" and treated with contempt. Rude and unhelpful.

I'll start with the positives: the room was lovely and the bed was wonderfully soft and comfortable. The bathroom was nice too, and the location was ideal. However, my husband and I feel extremely let down by the lack of breakfast and customer service. When my husband booked the hotel through bookings.com, we did so because breakfast was included. The hotel's actual website also says breakfast is included. When we came down at the specified time, the door to the restaurant was locked. We asked the man at reception about breakfast and he just said "no". When my husband said the website needs updating, he still replied with "no". He was very dismissive and unapologetic. If we had known they weren't serving breakfast we would have booked elsewhere. As a result, our holiday was more than we budgeted for. That, plus the lack of professionalism, left a bad taste in our mouths. Why work in hospitality with that sort of attitude? We both feel very ripped off and disappointed. It's a shame as the hotel was otherwise lovely.

This weekend 5th August 2023. York House Hotel hosted our Daughter's Wedding. We cannot recommend them enough. From all the assistance they gave in the running up to the day to the day itself they were so helpful, friendly and professional. The food was absolutely amazing, every guest commented on the quality and size if the portions. We could not have had a better meal in a Michelin restaurant. All the staff were extremely attentive without being overbearing. Guests bedrooms were furnished with extra touched such as white roses on the bed which were most welcoming. All we can say is 5 star review all the way. Sam & Iain Williamson - August 2023

Such a beautiful room. Very friendly helpful staff. I would return as the location is perfect for Theatre Royal and Art House. The views of town and countryside a delight with spectacular sunsets. Sleeping in a four poster bed just an added bit of luxury.

If you’re coming to Wakefield and weighing up your options for accommodation, I would definitely stay here. Ok - it’s a little shabby around the edges, but it has a lovely old building character and the staff was lovely. My room was amazing! Big room, four poster bed and chandelier 😄. Was not expecting that. Comfy bed too (most important for me when stopping for work). It also had a fridge. Also nice when you want to have real milk and wine for the evening.

⚠️⛔️ Took advantage of someone’s mental health vulnerability & overcharge them by £100 & refused to refund them & called them stupid for paying it 😔 Worse hotel I’ve Ever stayed in!! ☹️ Supposed to of had a million pound renovation but obviously must of run out of money before they got to our room!! Hotel smelt of weed, alcoholic drinks were charged different for each person & tasted like they were watered down!! Definitely recommend giving this dump a miss ⚠️⛔️

Stay clear of this hotel, it’s a half way house for the homeless and not as advertised. Paid and booked on the day of arrival via booking.com and paid up front. We were warned by the taxi driver not to go to this hotel. We went in to see for ourselves. The reception area said it all. Rubbish bags lying open and spilling everywhere, a burst dirty stained couch, dying plants and dirty surfaces, filthy floor. It smelled pee. There was no point looking at the rooms we asked for a refund and the manager raised his voice and said no way you’ve not got a chance, what the hell are you booking a B&B for. This is advertised as a hotel. When I raised the unacceptable standards and he told us to get out of his hotel and threaten violence. I will be reporting this to the police. Two women travelling alone should not feel intimidated by the hotel manager. Fact is this ‘hotel’ is not as advertised and is in fact a homeless place and we immediately did not feel safe there. The manager/owner who threatened violence should ashamed. Oh the advertised restaurant is not part of this Hotel. It’s annoying to have to give one star to be able to review.

The hotel has a function room directly below the rooms which played music so loud the beds were shaking until after midnight. When we complained about the noise, saying we had paid 600 pounds for 4 rooms, they told us that the function room had also been rented out and they had the right to play music till midnight. As we had small children and grandparents with us, this level of noise was completely unacceptable, nobody managed to sleep until the party was over and the party guests had left the hotel, which was well after 12. They claimed we had been advised that there was a party at checkin, which A: wasn't true B: wouldn't have made any difference to our reasonable expectation of a night's sleep anyway and C: was after they had charged us! We then read reviews and found that others have had a similar experience, with the same."excuse" given. When we asked for a 50% refund due to our nightmarish night, we were offered a derisory amount which we refused. Don't book here if you have an early start or are travelling with children.
