We made a last-minute booking and the hotel were so great in accommodating us. The reception was easy to find and we were greeted warmly by Erin. We had to make another booking the same night to accommodate another family-member and Erin was a great sport in giving us adjoining rooms and relocating us upstairs, including helping with all our suitcases and bags. The level of service here is akin only to what I've experienced in the Caribbean. A true care and warmth with a willingness to go above and beyond unasked. For this I give them an A+. The premise of community support and involvement is admirable and training up of youthful staff, grooming them in truly 5-star service standards is definitely welcomed! Other hotels would do to learn from them! In the morning of our departure, our things were whisked downstairs, again with a genuine joy in helping. We didn't get everyone's names, but our gratitude to Erin, Maisie, Alex and so many more who made difficult personal time for us into a comfortable, relaxing one. Loved the rotation of cookies daily and replenishment of assorted teas. My only advice would be for them to place non-skid bath mats in the shower trays and to install handrails, but otherwise, there is little to be faulted. We look forward to returning in the future!

From the moment the antique doors magically swung open on arrival to the genuine 'See you soon' as we left, this place was just excellent. Pleasant efficient greeting at the well signposted reception; simple and accurate directions to a huge suite of room, writing/drinks/makeup area, and we'll provisioned bathroom (large walk in shower). Plush furnishings oozing nostalgia for a time when customer service mattered. Amazing breakfast, almost too large, along with a help-yourself cold selection. Hard to believe this is a charity. Will have to find an excuse to return!

Excellent throughout. Nothing too much trouble (one minor malfunction in the room, swiftly and privately discusses and remedied). Stunning rooms huge attention to detail. All run as a CIC by a charity with a noble cause

Had to go looking for someone to check us in. Finally found someone that had a mouth full of food that he spat all over us while talking. He was extremely rude refusing to check us in as I didn't have I d even though it was all booked and paid for. He was very off with us NOT Approachable and very unwelcoming. Stayed here before with different staff that were lovely not again though.

Good morning Upon booking in your T&Cs you would have read that we require identification on arrival, this is for your and our protection and is a legal requirement. I will certainly pick up the other issues raised with our concierge to ascertain what occurred on the evening in question. We review all our policies as an ongoing process in an effort to improve our guest experience. Im am sad to hear on this occasion that you feel we fell below our usual high standards. Kindest regards

I arrived mid afternoon off a GWR train and was quickly checked in by an efficient young wonan. Because I had requested a walk in shower, i was allocated the disabled ground floor room named Dulverton. The rooms are all named after former or current GWR stations. The room had a garden rather than railway station outlook. As with Miriam N in July 2023 - see a review below - there were some unsatisfactory omissions. On the positive side, the bedroom was large, nicely carpeted in a beige shade, had a good working TV, excellent WiFi, access to a power point, tea and coffee with milk available from reception and good curtains that kept out light. However until 1800 when the receptionist finished, there was music audible in the room as were guests when checking in. There was also noise from the guests on the first floor. On my first night, a Saturday, the hotel was fully booked. The bedroom had a large chair iwith a throw over it in a corner behind the door. There were no other chairs, not even around the round table that had tea, coffee, good biscuits and z kettle. Presumbly a wheelchair has to be able to fit past but the area seemed wide enough, so why no chairs? This 1844 hotel had annoying green ceiling night lights. I agree with MN's review re this. The bedroom only had a doona. These are often too warm, but most hotels refuse to provide a top sheet. The pillows were fairly lumpy. How about some softer ones? The worst feature was the bathroom. The shower screed failed to drain all water. There was water everywhere after showering. A long handled flat broom was provided to direct the excess to the screed but why should I have to do this? Even in Philippines, Thailand. Peru and India. I have nevef had to deal with water over the complete bathroom floor. Bear in mind most rooms will be normal, rather than fitted out for the disabled. The handbasin was tiny as was the mirror. There was a much larger mirror to the side but shaving was onerous. Hot water was reliable. Shampoo and body wash fixed medium bottles were oddly positioned on the opposite wall to the shower outlet. Not normal! Towels were in excellent condition. The bedroom lacked a wardrobe but there were hangars. The young fellow at breakfast was polite. The hotel wanted to know what time I wanted it. No one else was dining at 0800 on a Sunday. Yoghurt, croissants and by order bacon, eggs and other items were available. The hotel has a lounge with Chesterfields and some railway books such as the history of the LMS. Like most Pommy and European hotels, there is no aircon. Whaf do guests do on 28 degree days, considered a heatwave in England? My room window was raised when I arrive. Anyone could enter from the street up about 20 steps and break in. The window lacked locks.

Love this lovely building and so many good things to say about its conception. This is my 4th visit and hope for many more but should add a note of concern as I hope management are not taking their eye off the ball. Room Washford is looking a little tired and needs some improvements: paint in the bathroom and sashes need repairing on both windows as both were impossible to open unless you propped them up with whatever you could find. Breakfast was a bit of a free for all despite 3 assistants and very little explanation of how to order. Hotel was quite full but have been there before 8n similar conditions and they coped. Please sort these things out as I want to come back

Generally enjoyable experience and a great enterprise initiative to support the development of young people. Location is handily right opposite the station and within easy walking distance of the cricket ground and town centre. Check in was efficient, friendly and informative. The room pluses were comfortable double bed, large shower area with plenty of shower power, big towels, wide choice of tea and ground coffee with a cafetiere. Room would have benefited from more than 2 hooks to hang clothes and a TV with a more reliable signal. While the room was clean and well serviced, parts could have done with a bit of paint or a touch up. So a slightly mixed bag. My 1st morning full breakfast was very good, all that I expected. 2nd morning the continental offering is probably at the thin end. I was down at 9am, not early but as booked and others were also there. All in all enjoyable and I will return for another cricket week that hopefully Somerset will win next time.

Good morning Thank you for your kind review, we are currently in the process of updating our rooms so this kind of feedback is incredibly helpful. We do offer temporary wardrobes at reception if required. We will be discussing our breakfast offering and I'm sure upon your return we will have some different options in place. Sadly, Somerset's cricketing performance is something we have no control over. Kindest regards

Tatty in places - toilet seat was fitted crookedly, chipped paintwork in various places. Overpowering smell of air freshner in corridors. Some staff clearly under trained and unprofessional in their manner. Noisy (inside and outside). Coffee at breakfast was undrinkable. Breakfast was not great. No vegetarian option as they didn't have the right stock. The bacon for the full English breakfast was inedible. When I left my luggage for the day I was assured it would be placed in a meeting room and safe - it was still in Reception when I returned some 7 hours later which was annoying as I know that reception in left unattended during the day. Up your game Great Western! I could go on but really can't be bothered. Will not stay here again which is a shame as it is close to the station.

On the plus-side. Historic building, great location if you’re arriving or departing by train. Vast rooms which are ideal for working in. Friendly staff. I believe the hotel is a social enterprise where young people get training for hospitality and they did a good job — were very professional and it’s a great initiative. The people were let down by the quality of the refurb. Wire coat hangers on a cheap free-standing rail. Decoration a bit frayed. very cheap and thin pillows. It’s a real shame as it could be really good. Oh there was a man sleeping in the garden too. Although I sympathise with his plight, I don’t think many mainstream hotels would allow that.
