Traditonal country inn, nestling between the Quantock hills and Exmoor national park. The New Inn is an 18th-century former coaching inn offering the complete village pub experience. We have five en-suite bedrooms-double and family. All equipped with TV, tea and coffee facilities and extremely comfortable beds. A restaurant serving a full a La carte menu as well as a more traditional pub menu.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We had lunch and it was excellent. High quality food and very good value for money. This is a community pub and they are doing a good job. Well done. The staff are warm and friendly There’s some narrow Somerset lanes to get to it but well worth the visit.

We left the opticians in shock. New special glasses were going to cost a fortune. Just before Christmas so we should tighten the belt by a few notches! At our penultimate roundabout going home we saw the sign to Halse, to hell with the cost we headed for the New Inn. Arriving just before 2pm would we be served? “Of course we’ll serve you”, and at least four others came after us. This community run Inn understands hospitality. We started with whitebait followed by fish and chips. Now this f&c had the best batter we’ve ever had. It was very light in texture, wonderfully crisp and just melted in the mouth. Could it have been a ‘tempura’ batter? We should have asked. We finished with the excellent Arctic Roll and its cherry coulis. A Luscombe ginger beer and a pint of Otter Ale in excellent form justified our decision to stretch the budget to its limit. So glad I have a leather punch to cut more holes in the belts!! I don’t think Alice nor her colleague could make us out! Were we in fact somewhat like the ‘Mad Hatters Supper Party’. Well, when we asked her name she said eventually, Alice as in Wonderland. We thoroughly enjoyed our selves in this hostelry full of others all enjoying a Saturday evening. The service was very efficient and delivered with much humour, needed as we were all in a jolly mood. The food was well presented and delicious though our cousin who was hosting this meal did ask Alice what it was accompanying his lamb tagine. It had taken him much effort to savour it. This crispy bhaji was almost cremated! He had enjoyed it so we left having a great laugh all around! Looking forward to our next visit….

We stayed 2 nights at the New Inn, Halse. Room 1 was lovely, with a bath. The bed was really comfortable. The car park and outside area are nicely kept. The staff looked after us really well- Lucy was great and always cheerful. The restaurant and the bar area were cosy, with good food.

Finding this gem on our holiday is such a blessing. Great atmosphere, nicely furnished, car parking and beer garden. Bar area very dog friendly and serves same food as the restaurant section. This is a traditional friendly village pub serving really great food, reasonably priced, in a charming off the beaten track village called Halse, not far from Taunton. Easy drive to / from Dunster and surrounding area. If you really want to find a great old fashioned pub with modern amenities and great service then this is it. They have no idea how good they are!

The New Inn is a warm and welcoming pub situated in a beautiful village called Halse. Overall this was a very pleasant way to spend a Sunday. Although busy the food was fantastic and the service was second to none. During our short visit for a Sunday lunch we felt at home thanks to the bar manager Annette who not only provided top service but also with a smile. The food was well above our expectations and apparently this was due to a new chef. We will be sure to visit again!

A very disappointing episode. My good friend and I arrived expecting a very pleasant country pub meal. The place was tatty - old and tired - both inside and outside. They had no chicken so when I ordered Moroccan Chicken I was told that the chicken hadn't been delivered! A group of 10 people had booked and just arrived and so we were told we'd have to wait at least half an hour for our meal. A very negative experience. We moved on to somewhere else and had a delicious meal.

This inn has a great history. Initially a slaughterhouse, then a coach house, it became an inn in the mid 1700's so you can imagine the feel of the old English pub. The staff were friendly and accommodating, and the manager had a good sense of humour believing that the poms are going to win the ashes this season. The rooms were well presented and full English breakfast in the morning was delicious. I would highly recommend a stay at this Inn
