Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A surprising find..... Beautifully decorated, in a boutique style, spotlessly clean and outstanding service........ Someone knows what they are doing in the kitchen, too, the food is excellent and freshly cooked.....Recommended, highly.

A lovely hotel with welcoming friendly staff. Julie made us feel so welcome along with her team. They couldn’t have been more friendly and accommodating. A relaxing sophisticated bar and amazing food. A fantastic vegetarian menu of high class tasty food! The room was comfortable with all facilities and the breakfast was amazing. We will definitely stay there again.

The North Hill hotel is a lovely conversion of an old building. The room was comfortable and quiet. Breakfast was excellent. The fresh fruit salad was prepared freshly for me and was delicious. The staff took particular care to provide what was required.

Great location, easily walk-able from train station and near town centre. Great breakfasts in the morning and friendly staff. Food in the evening was also great. Bed was very comfortable. Felt the room was a bit basic and noticeable wear and tear about the place. TV was very small, that would be my main criticism. Room was very loud as on the main road however double windows did a good job at minimizing noise during the night.

A nice hotel, one drawback rooms at the front of the building are noisy due to the busy road. This hotel is positioned well for the town centre. Great breakfast!! Piping hot and served to your table. I would recommend this hotel, however request a room at the rear of the hotel.

I stayed for a one night stop over for work. The hotel is very central so a great location for local shops and amenities, but as it is on such a busy road it did get quite noisy. My colleague and I both commented on how hot it was in the rooms; we visited during a hot summer period and despite a fan in the room, it was almost unbearably hot on the top floor. We could also hear quite a lot of noise through the walls from the other guests. The lady at reception was very friendly though and accommodated special requests very well for breakfast. The only slight comment that we didn't like was being called 'girls' - we are two women in our mid twenties! Overall an OK stop over, but not in a big hurry to return

Lovely little hotel within spitting distance of the main part of town. I was only here for one night with work commitments locally. Room was nice, staff were super great and the breakfast was banging. Noise from the road in the morning as I was on the front of the hotel but to be honest, I was up early anyway. All in, just stop overnight for the breakfast. Special thanks to the barman last night when I got back later on, quick drink at the bar he was good crack along with one of the other guests. Really liked the place.

I booked this hotel as a last minute night away with my wife. I had no expectations. Everything about this hotel was amazing. It was cheap without it feeling and looking cheap. The staff were really welcoming from the minute we stepped through the door. Special mention to Julie who is a real gem, so engaging and genuine. She couldnt do enough for us. There is a restaurant on site called The Green Room. Although we didnt eat dinner there, the food prices looked reasonable and i would definitely try it next time. Breakfast was delicious and once again the menu catered for all. The bar is well stocked and not excessively priced (bottle of prosecco was £18, winning!). Rooms are spacious and the beds super comfy. Had a really good nights sleep. Location of the hotel is great. Its in central colchester and just a short stroll up North Hill brings you to the High Street. All in all this hotel was a great find and we will definitely be returning.

I have just got back from a 4 night stay at the North Hill Hotel. I was down in Colchester for work. To start with, the customer service from all staff was fantastic, the breakfast excellent and cooked to order. I did see the prior reviews about noise at the front of the hotel, but as a not particularly fussy person, chose to ignore the advice to ask for a room at the back. This was a mistake on my part. The windows at the front are single glazed (I assume due to the age of the building and it likely being listed) the road is a busy bus route, and with the number of restaurants on the street, there is a bin collection in the early hours (4:45 or 5:45 to my recollection - either way too early.) Once the binmen had left after around 20 minutes with the engine idling, the buses started around every 5 minutes - there was no prospect of sleep after that. I asked to have my room changed to one at the back when going down for breakfast that morning and they couldn't have been more accomodating, I was rushing out for work and they just asked me to pack my bags and they'd shift them to my new room - when I got back that night, the new room was ready and perfect. Absolute silence and a fantastic nights sleep for the remainder of my stay. Ultimately a really nice hotel, great staff, great food and they're doing their best based on their location. Will likely be back down in Colchester for work in the next few months and will definitely stay here again (will just ensure to take my own advice and ask for a room at the back!)
