Starting with the positives, the room and bathroom we had was very clean (As were communal areas) and the bed comfortable (Lack of sleep for a different reason). The hotel has some interesting history on display and a feel that with a bit of investment it could become quite an attraction in itself. As mentioned by others it is in...

Although the room was clean, the floors creaked so loud you could hear your neighbour going to the toilet in the middle of the night. Corridors were narrow and doors were midget height. The breakfast was good however drinks like orange juice were running out and were not topped up. Ideal city centre location but desperately in need of renovation...

The George hotel is ideally situated right in the middle of Colchester town centre, which makes it ideal for shopping and visiting the park/castle museum. The hotel is nicely decorated, the rooms are clean and comfortable. It can be a little noisy at night though because of the pubs around. But worth a stay

Came for dinner a few days ago with a group of friends. Because the building is very old I wasn't expecting such an amazing night. With the building being very old it gives you a very warm and welcoming approach. The staff was so lovely and gives such a very good service The food was delicious and very well presented,...

An excellent dinner for a large group. The restaurant was oddly quiet for a Friday evening but as a relatively large group we enjoyed good food and service with plenty of time to talk. Prices seemed reasonable and quality very good. Seemed a bit steep (and time-consuming) to charge £10 for parking when other hotels offer it free. Otherwise very...

Having stayed at the George for 2 years in row for business, I have seen the rooms deteriorate with time. The central heating is broken therefore it gets unbearable hot in the evenings with no way of controlling this. Floorboards are very squeaky and the walls are so thin that you can hear everything from the neighbouring rooms. Staff do...

The website says the hotel is 500 years old but I feel the owners should have spruced it up a little since it was built. It looks a little tired and could really do with a renovation. Staff are very nice particularly the bar staff. Nice central place to stay too, right near the shops and the castle.

I had a small double room which was very small. Being an old building everything creeks, especially the plumbing and the floor boards. I had to pay £10 extra for breakfast, which was good but service was slow. Parking is also £10 per night unless you are staying for a few nights. Very good location but decor a bit tired.

The George Hotel the most iconic and oldest hotel set in the heart of Colchester, England's oldest city, right on the high street and approximately 100 yards from Colchester Castle. History resonates throughout the 500 year old coaching inn which is home to the stylish Courtyard Brasserie, serving excellent English a la carte dishes and daily specials, and the trendy coffee shop Cafe George.
