Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Well not sure where these bad reviews come from we have stayed here on several occasions when visiting family members around Colchester! We arrived Friday afternoon (6 of us) to attend a 60th birthday celebration. Upon arrival we were met by Mrs Karrie and a couple of the staff all were extremely welcoming and made every effort to ensure we were happy. There was a problem with the heating in our rooms this was rectified immediately until the problem was solved. The breakfast was fine a full English and should you require extra all you had to is ask. We had two comfortable quiet nights sleep. We had a pleasant stay and will definitely use this hotel again when visiting Colchester..

Extremely comfortable bed slept like a baby both nights. Friendly welcome when I checked in. Nice clean bathroom but thats where the positives end. The breakfast was dire! The sausages were undercooked still pink in the middle and had a weird mushy texture to them. Yolk of the egg was underdone and white was overdone and crispy. Hash brown was burnt and toast was barely browned. Cup of tea with uht instead of fresh milk (never had that at hotel breakfast before!) Croissant not warmed as per my request and no butter was offered with it. It wasn't soft and crumbly and I felt it had been sitting in the kitchen a long time. Then they had the cheek to charge me £10! On the website it clearly states that you can enjoy a continental or full English breakfast for £7.50. The receptionist insisted I paid £10 as that was what the boss quoted him. However more serious was when I tried to check out of the hotel at 7.35 this morning I could not get out of the building as all the doors were locked. The reception is manned until 10pm then they lock up and go home. I had to ring two emergency numbers to get someone to let me out! The fire safety department have now been informed and they were not impressed. For this reason alone I can only give this hotel a one star rating

No food, no wake up call, no bar, place shuts down at 22.00 hours, room freezing cold, all in all, pretty dreadful This is the first AND LAST time I will use this hotel. It would be so easy to provide some very basic levels of customer service

Very dated hotel, looks like they've scoured the local charity shops for their furniture & fixtures. The room was large, dated & was so extremely hot. Curtains pulled all the time to help keep heat out and windows only opened a little due to seagulls on the flat roof. We had to buy fans just to be able to sit in the room! Bathroom was not nice at all. Shower very poor & sink plug blocked. Breakfast (had to pay extra!) was advertised to start at 7.30, went at 8.15 to find one lady working the kitchen, phones and reception on her own who said no breakfast until 9. Went back down, not a great choice but ok. A man came to reception wearing old joggers, t-shirt & sliders to help (he had been very helpful to us the previous day) and another lady came and turned the world service on the radio. (why were there ash trays on the tables?). Very expensive at £200 room only. Poor quality.

One of the worst hotels I have stayed at Dirty thin and hard towels with blood stains on them. Room had a damp and smokey smell Passage to room was even worse. Bed linen had stains In various places. This hotel has a 3 star rating I wouldn't give it 1 Couldn't get a breakfast before 8.30 But their listing states 7am onwards nobody at reception on a night so no chance of getting a drink or a meal Just a general dirty hotel that is not fit for business

Stayed here last night. We were supposed to be in the globe but got an upgrade to this hotel. Staff very friendly and helpful when we asked for info about the area and nothing was too much trouble. The room was big with plenty of room and nicely furnished, had a fridge which was handy to keep our drinks cold! The beds were extremely comfortable. We didn't have breakfast so can't comment on that. Would definitely stay here again.

I write this review on behalf of my sister who came to see us in Colchester. I was with her when she checked into the hotel and was told that the reception was open until 10.00pm. Not so, as the second night l took her back to the hotel the place was closed up at about 9.00pm. The following night she has lost her key card for the room. So we went back to the hotel at 8.30pm to find reception all locked up. When l called the owners they told me it closed at 9.00 on a Sunday. So if you wanted to speak to anyone after about 9.00pm you had to ring them. God knows what you would do in an emergency. The entrance was down a dark alleyway at the side of the hotel. The outside light that would light up the alley was not working. I pointed this out to the management on the third day and they told me it would be fixed immediately. When my sister left for home 9 days later it still hadn't been repaired. The rooms were tired, and not checked as regularly as they should on her 12 day stay. She had to continually ask for more tea bags and milk, eventually we gave her some from home. The shower was only warm The car park at the back of the hotel seemed to be used by work vehicles which would wake her up most mornings at 6.00am as they revved up leaving the car park. On one occasion she was woken at 1.30am by a works vehicle in the car park. All in all the running of the hotel needs some looking at. In particular what time the reception shuts, as it changed every day. I also think there should be someone available at a hotel of this size 24/7. I think my sister will not be recommending this hotel to anyone else.

I booked a family pet friendly room and a twin on arrival was told by the Manternance manager that it was not possible to have the small dog because they had decided to put a small strip of carpet in the room but they had already taken the money for the stay from my bank when I had already arranged to pay cash on arrival (I believe that this lady was the manager or owner) and she was going to call us to cancel because she only just found out about the dog after me calling the hotel and being reassured that the rooms had patio doors leading out to the car park for easy dog walking once given are keys we were very upset with the rooms no door to take the dog out the card entry strip fell off the door as we tried to open it the rooms were very tired needed a good lick of paint and a good clean quite dusty hairs on the main room and bathroom floor black mould and soap/water scum around the bath and sink old stains on bed linen and both towels no bath mat hand towel the chair in the room looked like it had been chewed all ripped the flooring leading to the pet friendly rooms was damaged it had raised up and very bouncy and a trip hazard the water from the sink tap was ultra hot yet the shower was only just warm every time a tap or toilet was flushed there was this horrendous vibrating noise I believe from a filling tank or pump ? if you put your hand on the wall it vibrated so this was going on all night with people using the bathroom a security lamp was going on and off all throughout the night with only very thin curtains up so it light the room up every couple of minutes the manager put down bed sheets on the carpet in the end so we could use the family room with the door to car park we found lots of dead bugs in the room and maggots thankfully dead ones but still disgusting thankfully I did not book for breakfast the rooms That we where given looked nothing like what was on the website I booked through booking .com very very disappointing stay if they hadn’t of taken my money I would have moved on to another hotel Would never recommend this hotel to anyone
