Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Stayed one night in a suite in this hotel. Friendly, helpful staff, good food, classy decor, parking (with no rip-off, additional charge) & all at a fair price. Excellent breakfast (not buffet & with waiter service). Will definitely stay again.

I would definitely recommend Greyfriars. The afternoon tea was amazing both the traditional and the savoury. The staff are excellent very courteous. We will definitely return. It makes a change to have a wonderful experience compared to many other not so good that we have endured.

Hotel and breakfast was lovely and warrants a 5* however. We stayed in December having secured a great deal through booking.com when attending an event in Colchester. On check in the team took a £50 security deposit which was never refunded as it should have been on departure, one month later after reviewing my card statement I had to contact the hotel to get this back, however this will now lead to an interest charge for me as a result of their failure. The hotel will not recognise the damage and hardship their fault is causing. Avoid like the plague unless you want to defrauded.

First time staying here and it was lovely. Car park very handy as it’s in the centre of town. I ordered a sandwich and a cream tea from room service and it was without a doubt the best room service I’ve ever had. Freshly made, chips still hot, scone delicious. My room didn’t have wifi and I struggled to close the window which was open (on night of Storm Ciaran!) which is the only reason it didn’t get a 5.

Upgraded on check in, room quiet, clean and comfortable. Could improve rating by having table in room and WiFi that worked. Bar made delicious cocktails, room service prompt and cheerful. Great sleep and bathroom gigantic!

Great location access is via automatic gates from the rear car park. We arrived after a 6.5 hour car journey to be greeted that our room was not ready despite arriving a good hour past the 15:00 hr check in time . A free drink was offered and the room would be ready in 20 mins - not. Exhausted, and hungry we waited an hour until advised our suite was ready and our cases had been placed in the room. Suite 23 is a disabled room with ground floor access to a private courtyard and comes complete with all various modifications to ensure the facilities can be enjoyed. Not being disabled we would have much preferred a non disabled room with twin baths or twin showers and at 64 more than capable of getting up stairs - but were allocated a wet room with wall mounted seat in the shower. Room is spacious bright and pleasantly decorated, the mini bar is limited to bottled water and 2x bottles of Coke so don't get too excited at the free mini bar . The staff are very pleasant and accommodating. Gluten free well catered for at breakfast and staff very personable with their regular clientele, which made staying there feel at little awkward , as they chatted about their families and schools etc with select customers , meanwhile switching to ‘professional’ mode when dealing with others. We had plans for Dinner and ate out one night and elected to have room service the other evening. Lovely food all delivered hot and freshly prepared to our room, only criticism was £90+ of food and they elected to serve with standard main course cutlery knife for a steak meal? which made eating steak somewhat challenging. Persevered rather than request different cutlery, as we really wanted to enjoy food hot without interruptions . Negatives on the room. the bathroom audio didn't work - so little point in having speakers installed with volume control in a bathroom if they don't work and additionally the toilet syphons when flushed and results in constant filling and flowing water in the cistern straight into the pan for several hours after the WC was flushed. Didn’t report it as again we need R&R without having to have maintenance staff in our room. The not so good - we paid in full some eight months prior to the visit. On arrival we were asked to present a credit debit card to which £50 would be credit checked to allow extras to be booked . No issues, standards practice one would think? . On our last day at breakfast whilst checking our bank account we saw an additional £290 had been debited? from our account. Checking with receptionist after we had established we had paid in full with the exception of room service she blamed other staff for processing the charge . In truth it was done the same time as the £50 was processed, yet she was unwilling to take personal responsibility for her actions. I was asked if I would like it credited ??? Yes please, given that GreyFriars have been paid in full eight months prior and without my authority you cannot just debit circa £300 from my bank account - at which point I was admonished by the staff member that yes they actually can, as I presented the card!!! . Totally correct - but only for £50 !! . A credit transaction was done, but we now have to wait 7-10 days for our account to be credited. Shortly after we checked out and settled our £120 extras account. Arriving home some 6 hours later it dawned on me they have also debited £50 which wasn't deducted off the balance and therefore in addition to the £290 taken, they also had another £50. Contacting the hotel I advised this was only pending and will not be debited but may take several days to clear. We are home now, had a great time in Colchester, had a lovely stay in a nice hotel. but have circa £340 in our account that's currently awaiting credits and cancellation that we cannot access those monies until Grey Friars staff process it. Place is great -, have plans to visit again. I would recommend you just keep an eye on your bank accounts

We had a very pleasant stay, at this very splendid hotel. The staff were very accommodating, helpful, and we were made to feel very special. The room and facilities were first class. The breakfast had a very good selection. We ate in the restaurant and once again the service and staff were excellent. From The Richards in Kent
