Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We have been there twice for dinner this last week and loved it both times, piping hot good food at reasonable prices in a nice friendly atmosphere. Simply could not fault the hotel & it is ok for parking in the evening. Will be back again next time we are in Ballater.

Review is solely on the restaurant. My husband and I were visiting the town for a week, we had our 9 mo old with us. The town is quaint and lovely but does close early. We had a great dinner here early in the week. We were given a high chair, great food and service. We wanted to have our last dinner here because we knew we’d have a great experience. Unfortunately, we were told at the door it would be a long wait, which is fine. We were not pushy or rude. Our baby is always good, didn’t cry or fuss. After several delays they finally just told us that they wouldn’t be able to accommodate us, ever. Basically turned us away with no reasoning. It was shocking and disappointing bc there weren’t many other options for us to eat. If it was too busy, we could have decided to wait it out but we were basically told to leave because they couldn’t help us. Never has this happened to me anywhere in the world I’ve visited. Put a bad taste to our trip.

Sorry this is not true, You had such great service that you decided to come back, but were then told to wait at the door with your baby as it would be a long wait. We then turned you away after several delays with no explanation . This does not marry with the good service you came back for and we cannot remember this ever happening . We do note this is your first review 9 months after your visit. Alan

We were lucky enough to stay at The Alexandra when we stayed in Ballater Our rooms were clean, comfortable and functional and quiet even though on the main road The camembert followed by steak pie for dinner was exceptional and washed down by a welcome beer or 2 The staff were great and we had some good banter whilst working our way through their extensive collection of drams Breakfast was great and a relaxed affair The only downside being we only stayed one night

When in Ballater this is always our port of call for food as they always serve fantastic delicious dishes with fresh produce. Their steak and ale pie must be the best i have ever tasted and the food portions are of decent size. The staff are very friendly depite what any ridiculous 1 star reviews say. We are very happy to drive for over an hour just to eat at this establishment. The staff need to be very proud of the food and service they provide, well done folks!!

Casual dining, friendly staff. Lasagne and salad beautifully cooked. Steak pie - one of the best ever. Good selection of local ales. Haggis and black pudding Bon bobs to start was easily shared👍 This is the third time we have been and this restaurant and bar team never fail to deliver👍

Didn’t feel a warm welcome. Food was average. Was surprised not to be given the opportunity of Parmesan with our Risotto dishes. Choice of only 2 white wines by the glass neither of which were suitable

Found the Alexandra in Ballater to be a real highlight of our Scotland trip. Stayed in 4 hotels and this was the most memorable by far. Stayed for dinner and breakfast. The food was delicious and the staff were most welcoming. The decor was surprisingly high standard for what is an old building and very stylish indeed. Sylvia, Alan and the team you should be highly proud of the establishment you have created and Jes and I can't wait for our next visit

Nice small friendly hotel right in the centre of Ballater. Hotel has a bar/restaurant plus an outside seating area. Our room was a little small but was fine. Service was very friendly and breakfast was good.

I was on a 12 day road trip with my wife staying atBallater caravan site and we decided to call in for a drinkrefThe most unfriendly bartender, obnoxious, rude, seemed racist to an Englishman !! I travel all over the world for business and pleasure and have never been treated like this before ! I love a nice pint of real ale and always ask for a small taste to try before i order and have always been offered a choice, i asked for a taste of 2 of the Cairngorm breweries finest and was told I couldn’t taste as they didn’t give away free drinks and would be out of business giving away beer !!! Don’t think so, a friendly service I’ve had from many pubs in Scotland , he and his friends at the bar looked at me like an alien Ballater is amazing but do not frequent this establishment !!!

sorry Lynnb, was certainly waiting for this review, seemed racist, you came into the bar and asked to try all the ales we had, I'm sorry but no, come in and ask to try a beer you fancied tasting no problem, things are hard enough just now but wow we'll throw in the racist card because you couldn't have a couple of free beer tastes, sorry lynne but we look after thousands of customers from all over the world and hopefully our customer service reviews bear this out.

The Alexandra Hotel is charming, like something out of a Maeve Binchy novel, and yet also very comfortable which is quite an accomplishment, charm and comfort don't always go together but they do here. I would have liked to have stayed longer than our one night. Everything we needed to be very comfortable in our room. Very nice dining room and bar with very good food. And the full Scottish breakfast in the lovely separate breakfast room was the best meal I had in the entire month I spent in the UK, and that's saying something as I had some delicious meals there. The proprietors are friendly, kind and immediately responsive, I can't thank them enough. I'd love to think I may be able to return someday and I highly recommend the Alexandra Hotel.
