We had stayed at another of the Crerar hotels, Golf View in Nairn, so our expectations were very high. I have so many contrasting views of this hotel.

The staff and service were excellent, the staff were always there when you needed them and nothing was too much trouble for them. They seemed under staffed as we saw the same faces at dinner and breakfast but they were all stars.

The public rooms are full of character, with plenty of comfortable seats to relax in. Even the public bar is great with plenty of atmosphere.

The menu was limited but the food was good, as we were there for 3 nights we couldnt find enough variety for all of our nights, so we ate out on the last night. Breakfast were great every day with a surprising range of items available.

Our first impression of the room was very poor, waiting for the 40W energy saving light to warm up was not a good way to start. The decoration is tired and in need of a major overhaul. Bed was comfortable and everything was clean. The bathroom was a real disappointment, rusty metal bath with a broken shower above the bath. It was shocking to see as we now expect a little more for the price we paid. Maintenance did replace the shower attachment very quickly, which at least stop us burning our hands every time we used it.

We were in room 16 which received a lot of noise from the public rooms below, worse still was hearing the staff turning up early in the morning, it was loud enough to wake us everyday. At 7am the vents for the kitchen were turned on, this was impossible to sleep through. The unit had to heat up first, that sounded like a very loud and old car on the starter motor.

If the rooms can be sorted this has the potential to be a great hotel, in a great location.

If you want nice, friendly, helpful people this is one place to come to. From Manager to restaurant and bar staff, houskeepers etc. unfailingly polite and helpful.
Is it a luxury hotel - no.
It's a typical town centre hotel thats been aroung for a while right in the centre of Ballater with welcoming log burners at reception and in the lounge. We were in room 8 on 1st floor. Couch cushions a bit tired in seating area, bed very comfortable and electric heaters kept room at nice temperature. Seems to have had most areas recently redecorated (slight smell of paint in corridors etc.).
Wide choice of food in restaurant area at breakfast includes fry ups, cold meats and cheese and even finnan haddie! Evening meals currently in bar area from steak pie and salmon to steaks. All meals were pretty quick in arriving at the table, nicely served and piping hot
Very good value for money as far as we were concerned.
Will certainly return at some point.
Came home feeling relaxed but embarrassed as still had room key in my pocket !!!

Nice location in Ballater but the hotel is very tired and lacks any ambiance. The bar was dark and empty and not pleasant to sit in, the restaurant old fashioned and somewhat kitsch and the rooms are old, tired and shabby. The food in the restaurant was nice and service fine for dinner but surprisingly nowhere to eat if you have a dog in a ‘dog friendly’ hotel. Our dog wouldn’t settle with the maid going in and out of nearby rooms and so as to
Not disturb other guests, my partner was unable to join us for breakfast as the dog and even though she was sat in the drawing room with the dog, staff were unable to serve her breakfast despite being only 20ft away from our table and in clear site. Plenty of free parking nearby but the hotel is in desperate need of a makeover and the dog friendly policy needs to be re-thought. Stayed in a number of Crerar hotels and all others were very accommodating in allowing us to eat in the bar with the dog. Fine for 1 night stay but should be much nicer being in the Royal Deeside.

Just back from a 2 day stay at this wonderful hotel. The food was excellent quite different from other hotels I have stayed in, in a nice way. They have obviously made an effort in trying to be different. What makes the place is the friendly staff, so helpful and accommodating, in particular Lesley the receptionist, who quickly sorted out, in a very professional manner a minor problem that I had.
Located in the centre of the village, it is both rustic and modern, many of the rooms having been recently refurbished, and rustic because of the great sitting room with a magnificent log fire. Great for walkers and a place too chill out. Highly recommended with plenty of cafes and bars in the village. All floors had adequate hand sanitisation stations and one felt very safe staying there

Booked online for a 2 day break to celebrate our 30th Wedding Anniversary. Ballater is a lovely village in a stunning location in Royal Deeside, the Deeside Inn is centrally placed with parking close by. The hotel is clearly going through some upgrading but is in good condition throughout, our room was clean & well presented. The staff throughout our stay were excellent and all the relevant Covid-19 guidance was adhered to without being obtrusive. The food was lovely and clearly locally sourced where possible, you certainly won't leave the table still hungry! Overall we have no negative comments and thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
Two points to note in the room though .. having a hairdryer 'fixed' into the drawer and needing a button to be continuously depressed for operation is not ideal if you have alot of hair 🙈 and the mirror hidden in the wardrobe is totally impractical.
Everything else about the room was perfect 🙂

I visited 8th February with my wife, our 2 dogs, my parents and their dog.
We all visited using a Winter break special, 3 course meal, bottle of wine, breakfast and a night stay for £99.
Absolute bargain!
My wife and I previously stayed here in 2016 and loved it.
The food is excellent, I had the wood pigeon for starter and venison for main and it was spectacular.
Chilling out by the wood fire is great, the staff are all lovely and the location is great.
The hotel does need a bit of updating here and there but for the price, you cannot complain.
Excellent 1 night break and will be back

Such friendly and motivated staff, nicely dressed in a professional smart unifirm

For the money £130 bnb our room was so comfortable and upgraded. Immaculate modern shower room.
Great beds
Super white towels
Arran toiletries, lovely
Very welcoming comfortable public area
Central location easy parking

If you pick the cheapest option of room I can't say for definite but I think there's a wing / floor that's not refurbished yet.

Dinner was beautiful and dining room is welcoming

I definitely would take with a pinch of salt some of these previous reviews.

Well definitely go back...

GOOD: Very attentive and helpful staff.
Breakfast options very good though I suggest adding a spoon of baked beans option to the Full Scottish.
I felt safe, secure and clean with sanitiser available everywhere.
Liked the aged furniture in the common & dining areas.
IMPROVE: Rooms and hallways are dated, worn and tired needing refresh.
Replace chipped bath with walk-in shower or functional shower over bath.
Water pressure in toilets take forever to refill.

We first went into the bar after settling into the room the first 2 draught beer types I asked for weren't available (Guinness and a Belhaven Best). The barman wasn't exactly friendly or indeed helpful in offering an alternative. He wasn't exactly welcoming either, he either lacked confidence or need some customer care training.
When we went in for our meal there was no reference to a Wine List (or indeed drinks menu) being available. When we did ask we were pointed toward a glass cabinet and advised (politely) to leave our seats and look at the wine in the cabinet if we wanted to choose a wine. We declined that offer. Just to add we weren't offered the chance of a drink on sitting down at the table, we had to ask (but staff can be forgetful).
For the meal I asked for a Venison Burger. My partner ordered Steak Pie. I cut the burger in half and the middle was pink, blood oozed out. Not my thing and I tried eating it but that was as far as that went. Would have been good if they had asked if I wanted it either "Rare, Medium or Well Done". The waitress did ask what was wrong I declined to answer and asked for the bill. I didn't want a fuss. They didn't charge me to be fair.
We went back into the bar area but after our initial experience of hospitality we left and headed to another establishment to spend our money.
Just before checking out the next morning I had received an email with innvoice attached that I was to be charged for the 1 night stay. I advised the chap on reception I had prepaid the room online through Booking.com. He said he'd have to check that. He came back, apologised and confirmed I wouldn't be charged twice.
I rarely complain and was really looking forward to our stay in this establishment but honestly I was disappointed. This place could be doing with brushing up on customer care.

My wife and I stayed here for one night at the end of June. I choose the hotel due to how close it is to the Linn Of Dee car park (35 mins away) because I was climbing Ben Macdui from there.

The room was very big and spacious and very clean. The hotel has recently been refurbished I had read and you can tell with the room. The bathroom was also very large with a good sized shower, all very modern and new. There was also a large walk in wardrobe. The bed was very large and very comfortable and I had one of the best nights sleep I have had in a longtime.

The hotel is really nice and beautifully decorated. The dining room was also very nice and spacious. Breakfast was good, my wife is a vegetarian and I am vegan and I mentioned this ahead of time. I had a couple of vegan sausages, some potato cakes and a mushroom. I was very surprised to find out there were no baked beans, I don't know if they had run out but I always presumed baked beans were a staple breakfast food in any hotel?

The hotel is located on a street in the village but the village is so quiet there is absolutely no noise. The entire area was relaxed, calm and peaceful.

The staff were friendly and helpful and I would not hesitate to stay here again when I am next in this area.
