We chose this resort without really knowing what it and the area has to offer and we're very pleasantly surprised. Besides the beautiful resort itself, this area has many hidden gems to experience, including castles, Pictish stone rings and cairns, Royal residences, historic parks, hiking trails and monuments, mountains, skiing, churches, lochs, battlefields and Scottish history.

On arrival we were greeted with smiles and a very warm welcome from the reception staff, that was much appreciated after a long drive from Kent.
All hotel protocols were duly explained and we were well informed about the facilities which were open and what was closed. Unfortunately pool was closed and was one of the things we were looking forward to use.
When we got into our two bedroom suite we were overwhelmed and very happy with the standard and quality in general. The suite was immaculately clean.
It was disappointing that the Hotel's restaurant was closed and only a very reduced service was available. I don't understand this when other restaurants are now open for service in a safe manner. Other guests showed similar disappointment with this. This is a missed opportunity!
We all felt very safe during these difficult times with staff wearing PPE and sanitation stations provided. Also in the room where sani wipes were offered.
The property is well kept internally with room for improvements outside, appreciate we were getting into autumn.
As this was for a potential 6 persons the seating(comfortable) is not sufficient around the TV, this should be looked into and possibly a comfy chair after a long day exploring the beautiful countryside.
Throughout the stay all staff we interacted with were great so please give them praise from us.
All in all we had a great (although short) holiday from our daily stress and I am already looking at dates for our next break away at Craigendarroch Suites.

Some nice restaurants locally and nice to experience the history in the area.

Booked a studio king and were upgraded to a king suite with a fireplace – pleasant and nice surprise, thank you to reception! The suite was large with a separate bedroom with a king bed that was very comfortable with nice bedding. Because this is a Hilton, the room had Kleenex, washcloths, and nice amenities. There is no A/C and thankfully it was cool when we stayed in May. There were two bathrooms, and both had new fluffy white towels. The sitting room with a fireplace had a kitchenette with microwave, dishes and coffee maker which was great as we ordered the continental breakfast brought to the room for £7.95. There was bottled water and milk in the fridge.
Our greeting upon arrival was friendly, warm and welcoming. Parking was easy and the hotel has amenities such as a swimming pool and fitness center. We only stayed one night and we were pleased with our choice.

Traveled to this very nice hotel in September 2020 as part of a business trip entertaining very important guests. Obviously the usual covid restrictions were in place and I understand the implications/difficulties this causes within every business. However I have to say I'm extremely disappointed with our stay for a number of reasons.

1. A very limited menu for eating and entertaining guests with absolutely no warning or discussion to pre warn us prior to our stay. Although the food was tasty enough the portion sizes were small so much so many of our party ask for something else of the menu as well as what they had already eaten only to be told the kitchen was closed - 8pm with no pre warning or room service available.

2. We were trying to forget the disappointment of the kitchen being closed at 8pm when the Manager came over and said the following (Can I please ask you to drink up the bar is now closing! This was now 8.30pm... Absolutely ridiculous the current government guidelines stated a 10pm curfew on bars and when I questioned this protocol It was agreed this was the case however management had taken the decision to close the bar at 8.30pm.. Why I asked! We were spending money acting in a professional considerate manner, only to be told shortage of staff. We were the only party in the bar along with two other couples whom found this decision bizarre. In all honesty I would not be one bit surprised if this lovely hotel go's into administration. Its almost like they are expecting and relying on government hand outs instead of exceeding clients expectations.

Summary - £201 per room with a very limited menu, restricted operating times and no breakfast is farcical. I will not be coming back anytime.

Response from HGV Resorts, Owner at Hilton Grand Vacations Club Craigendarroch Suites Scotland

Thank you for your review. I am disappointed to learn that you did not enjoy your stay due to the hours of our Keiller Lounge. Upon resuming our operations we took the decision to open Keiller Lounge on a limited basis to ensure we could keep our colleagues and customers safe during these unprecedented times. We are periodically increasing the food options available, and we currently have a takeaway menu in operation from 5pm - 8pm each evening. There is also a hot food menu in the Lounge. I understand you would prefer longer hours of operation, however, I am sure you can appreciate that this phased approach was a sensible option to take during this pandemic. We appreciate all feedback, as through this we strive to improve our service. I hope to welcome you back to the resort in the near future. Kind Regards, Craig Hay Resort Administration Manager

We were fortunate to reserved a one bedroom suite. I wish I had read more reviews suggesting which suites to select. We had a good bit of luggage and elevator service did not service our mezzanine floor room, suite 8. Though easily accessed and a good size with small kitchenette, the insulation between floors was inadequate. The family staying above us had a rambunctious child who stomped around in the mornings and evenings, distractingly so. Housekeeping service began early and linen storage was next to our room as we heard them accessing it frequently in the morning. Continental breakfast selections are delivered to your room after making choices the night before. Not much to miss. Mid- morning offerings are made at the restaurant. There is a nice fitness facility, steam room, sauna, indoor pool and hot tub. Adult hour from 8-9 pm in the large pool and spa pool. Bathing suits are available for purchase as well. The restaurant requires reservations for dinner. As Elite HGV owners, Diamond HHonors, the facility was nice but we would have preferred a better suite selected for us.

Room Tip: Not easy walking distance to Ballater. Make dinner reservations. Don’t stay in Suite 8, too noisy.

This was our first time and Scotland, and it was amazing. We flew into Aberdeen and took a rental car. The rental car was quite expensive, but we wanted to travel around not worrying about bus connections etc.
The property lies just outside Ballater a small town which has some good restaurants a few grocery stores and some history.
We stayed in a suit, there are cabins as well on the property, even with the limited kitchen we had we were able to save some money buying food at the local grocery store instead of eating out every time.

The restaurant and workers are great, it is usually not too busy for lunch but for dinner make reservations even at the last minute they will try to squeeze you in. Wednesdays is steak night make sure you get over there.

Leisure attractions at this hotel are great, Tennis courts, ping pong table, snooker table, a small gym, and best of all the pool that has a hot tub, sauna, a steam room, and two separate pools which have a comfortable temperature.
The only downside to the pool, there are not a lot of places to place your towel but I am sure that is planned so there can't be any wars on who is getting what chair, in addition, the room outside the pool is limited.

Personnel are friendly and make you feel warm and welcome regardless of where you are on the property.

Washer and dryer are on the property in the main building don't know if they have any in the cabins.

Kids can do drawing contests on a weekly base as well as trivia races across the property.

You can walk down to Ballater in about 15 minutes to the center, there is also a riverwalk.

If you plan on using the SPA facilities i.e. massage and other services do not wait and think next-day appointments are happening. I guess depending on the season at least a week out appointments should be made.

The property is well taken care of, and they have a giant Christmas tree so if you are going around that time it should be amazing.

We stayed at Craigendarroch for 2 nights in august, a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 children).

We were staying in a one bedroom suite and it was really lovely. The kids slept in a sofa bed in a spacious lounge and we had a really large comfortable bedroom. We had 2 really large bathrooms too. Everything was furnished to a really high standard, not what we were expecting after reading some of the reviews.

The leisure facilities at the hotel are great and spotlessly clean. There are 2 swimming pools, squash and tennis courts, table tennis and a snooker room, lots to occupy families when not exploring outside and everything can be booked in advance at the leisure centre reception.

We ate at the keiller restaurant. The food and service was good but there wasn’t much atmosphere as the huge room was largely empty and very quiet.

Service at the hotel was excellent. We had a curteousy call before we arrived, mobile phone text messages checking everything was ok and the staff at the front desk and leisure club super friendly and helpful.

The hotel is really well located just 5 mins drive from ballater which is a pretty little Victorian town with great cafes for breakfast and lunch. There are lots of walking and cycling opportunities and places to explore around there. We went to Loch muick which was beautiful and the kids enjoyed the vat of burn at the muir of dinnet nature reserve and also the drive to glenshee and views from the top of the chairlift absolutely stunning.

Overall we had a great stay. We hadn’t expected the hotel to be as good as it was but it was really lovely. Our kids (7 and 12) absolutely loved it and rated it the best we stayed at in Scotland !!

This stay was not cheap and we expected a lot more than we got. When we arrived we tried to book dinner and were told we could have it immediately at 1730 or wait until after 8pm but reception weren't allowed to book people later and we would have to go and speak to the restaurant. I tried to book a fitness session in the gym and I was told that reception could not do that and I would have to go and speak to the fitness centre at the end of the corridor. It seems that reception could not help me very much. We were looking forward to breakfast which they happily informed us would not be served in the restaurant but we would have a bag of 'continental breakfast' delivered to our room. Our second floor room was accessed by using two lifts and going through five heavy doors which did not open electronically and slammed behind you. Now try that with a few cases. And no, there was no-one to help us.

The continental breakfast was an instant porridge and a bottle of tropicana. The croissant was forgotten and we had to ask for it.

This is not a hotel but a restaurant, a front door and a health club that don't really communicate. It seemed there was no managerial presence to bring it all together. The layout is not suitable to anyone with accessibility needs and until the restaurant service breakfast is restored I see no reason to stay here.

Thank you for completing an online review following your recent stay. Please accept my apologies for being unable to book a table for you at your preferred time. The peak dining times of 18:30-19:30 tend to fill up quickly which often leaves only earlier and later times for short notice reservations. I am disappointed to read you were not offered assistance with your luggage. Please be assured, I will discuss your comments with our front desk team as this assistance should be offered to all our guests. Thank you for your feedback as through this we strive to improve our service. I look forward to welcoming you back to the resort in the near future. Kind regards, Craig Hay Resort Administration Manager

We had just one night here - booked a studio but we were upgraded to a suite. It was nice to have extra space, though out doors did open out onto the communal bins! We had booked a slot in the pool, which was all very efficiently managed, Everywhere was clean - no covid worries at all. We enjoyed a cocktail or two in the outdoor seating area, and the bar staff had no problems with us requesting glasses of tap water also, and to take up to our room at night. All the staff we encountered were very pleasant.
The resort did have a slightly dated air to it - I had last been when it newly opened over 30 years ago so this was not really surprising.

We’re here just now for a long weekend and everything has been amazing since the minute we arrived. The lady who checked us in was so friendly and helpful, gave us all the local information on walks and tourist attractions etc.

Bar/lounge/restaurant is beautifully decorated and Suzy the restaurant manager is just lovely, nothing is a problem for her and she works really hard to keep the restaurant ticking over. There’s a really lovely gentleman waiter called Martin who, if you’re interested in boxing, will enlighten you with some fascinating conversation and teach you things you never knew. He’s so interesting and a really lovely guy!

Lodges are absolutely spotless and have everything in them you could possibly need, situated in stunning surroundings with two villages at either side of the resort that take less than 5 minutes to drive to.

Echoing the previous answers, we rented a car, which is by far the best option for getting around rural Scotland. Ballater is a little off the beaten path for public transportation. A train, bus, and/or taxi combination is a possible alternative, but it might prove quite expensive and complicated (i.e. Train to Aberdeen and bus to Ballater with a taxi to the hotel). Tickets to Balmoral are available online but I'm not sure if the hotel sells them directly.
Answer from Craig Hay
I can confirm that in the UK, service animals such as guide dogs are permitted within businesses, including at Craigendarroch. However this legislation does not include emotional support animals.

Answer from Craig Hay
I would recommend the One Bedroom Suite. This has a king bed in the bedroom and a sofa bed in the lounge. We can also provide a baby cot for your newborn. There is no additional charge for the use of the pool and no minimum age requirement, however any child under the age of 16 must be accompanied in the water by an adult.
Answer from Craig Hay
Most car hire companies in the UK have a minimum age of 21 for car rental. I would recommend hiring a car as we are quite remote and there is not a great public transport network covering the area.
