The Royal Glen Hotel boasts a prime seafront location that guests consistently applaud, nestled near the town center and beach, offering serene views. While some travelers find the rooms spacious and the hotel brimming with historic charm, others consider them dated and cramped, leading to mixed opinions on the overall value.
Guests commend the cleanliness and the friendly service, though some amenities have received criticism for being outdated. The atmosphere blends past elegance with areas that guests feel could benefit from a refresh.

Detailed Reviews
Stayed for a week in August 2020 in the luxurious room "Henry". The room is fantastic with a separate sitting room ( and its own TV) plus a bathroom with a roll top bath and huge walk in shower. Extremely comfortable twin beds ( although you can ask for the room to be made up as a double). The dining room is in the lower ground floor and as such was cool during the very hot weather. The food is very good and there is always something on the menu that suits your own tastes. I would like to see some classics added to the menu like Curry and Rice or chilli con carne but understand the difficulties of trying to cater for everyone. The staff are extremely helpful, wonderfully enthusiastic and extremely cheerful. The latest addition to the hotel is a patio in the gardens which was a lovely place to sit in the evening with a libation or two or three, I have been to this hotel a number of times and seen it develop over the years and can honestly say we have never had a bad experience yet. For those people who believe it is expensive, check out the other hotels close by and you will find it is excellent value for money. I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel, we will certainly be back soon.

I notice some negative comments on this site but our excellent experience of our 5 night stay here will linger in our memories.
The hotel is family owned and this is very much reflected in the great staff that they employ and the fact that the owners are on site frequently to maintain high standards.
We stayed in 'Elizabeth' a really lovely room with a new bathroom with a walk-in shower as well as a bath, this room has underfloor heating which makes it very cozy even if the water supply is a little quirky! We also had a small private terrace which was a treat.
The hotel itself has an amazing history and the owners have very much kept the heritage in mind which is reflected in the decoration and furnishings. Where they have extended the building this has been done very sympathetically.
What can I say! The staff here are young but sooo enthusiastic, I think we ended up friends with all of them, too many names to mention but they really helped make our stay really great ..... thank you to all of you!
We had chosen to have dinner, bed and breakfast, the food at dinner was tasty and the service in the restaurant excellent, the selection of food was always good and we had no trouble in finding something that we both enjoyed. The breakfast selection was excellent and always served with a smile!
We really enjoyed our stay in Sidmouth, as a place to relax it is amazing, if you go then do visit Ebenezer's Christmas Shop and Cafe, a really brilliant experience and the food well priced and delicious ...... we will visit again, thanks Caroline!
We highly recommend The Royal Glen Hotel and Sidmouth itself, we will return!

Having stayed here before some years ago, we decided to make a re-visit, it had changed somewhat, updated and nicely presented. We only booked B&B as we mostly eat out at lunchtime, however the breakfast was presented very well and plentyful. The upstairs drawing room has been decorated in a most wonderful way and offers a relaxing place to sit in or one the terrace which looks towards the sea. Sidmouth we like as it does not cater for the slot machine gangs which now frequent so many seaside places. Have stayed at The Victoria, The Belmont, and the Royal Glen, all offer different styles, but the Royal Glen is special and homely.

The hotel is clean, staff are friendly and I appreciated that the owner took time out to try and defend her hotel. While I fully understand the hotel is historic, decor in some areas is extremely dated and the website does not fully reflect all rooms. While it details that they differ in size, all are not at the same decorative standard and I have better English breakfasts from a supermarket cafe.
Room 22, overlooking the car park, is by far the most miserable room I have ever stayed in. We were greeted by a cold autumn draft and slight smell of damp as soon as we walked in. The window was wide open (I will explain about that later) and I have not seen carpets like that in a hotel room since the 1980’s! The bed was too low and there were two low boudoir chairs in this small room, one right in front of the wardrobe doors so had to be moved in order to open them. Due to the dated fitted furniture, the small double was very cluttered and there was little room for baggage. The vanity mirror is positioned too high if you sit and too low if you stand! All in all, the room was terribly designed.
We nearly left and drove home later that evening as the room was still cold, and the shower had no water pressure. We could hear the occupants on either side, their ablutions and bathroom fans.
The room did not get dark, the hotel and by default Room 22 is floodlit, those lights remain on until 2300. The curtains let in light as they were not flush with the wall, neither did they meet the window sill, so were more decoration than practical. There is a terrible condensation issue, which explains the windows being left wide open during the day and the smell of damp. Even using the sliding vent in the window the second night did not alleviate the condensation.
Breakfast was awful, scrambled eggs were watery and flavourless, the mushrooms and tomato were mass produced in the oven. It comes to something when even the thin sliced bread was not even toasted properly, I received warm brown bread when I’d asked for granary toast. Even a pot of tea was ruined by a burst tea bag! Needless to say, we skipped breakfast the next day and had a wonderful substitute at the Otterton Mill.
My husband will not let on how much our weekend break cost, an anniversary treat as we could not go abroad this year. Looking at the tariffs, Room 22 is overpriced and not good value. Please do your research before booking this hotel. The photograph of Room 22 was taken on a wide angle lens and does not reflect its true size.

Thank you for our much enjoyed 6 nights in this delightful hotel where nothing is too much trouble for owners and staff alike. A special thank you to Hilary, at my first lunch I dipped the sleeve of my freshly laundered white jacket in my delicious tomato soup, then sprayed the front of the jacket with the same. Fiona removed it, gave it to Hilary who took it home, rubbed it with stain remover, scrubbed it clean and returned it with a smile. Service does not get better than this! The breakfasts offered a wide variety of food, all cooked well, and, without exception, dinner was excellent with a selection of dishes covering which always covered fish and vegetarian palates as well as meat eaters. It is a short 5 minute walk to the sea front so was an excellent choice as we found it very quiet and peaceful.

This is a belated review, having stayed (again) for a week at the end of July. I wrote a review years ago saying how unique this hotel is, and I have not changed my mind. The general feel is of a country home, in which the residents can roam freely in various settings both inside and out in the lovey gardens and verandah, so finding a good spot for a quiet read or a crossword and a natter, complete with a coffee, is very easy. The views of the sea are delightful, but from a sheltered viewpoint which is very welcome, and the new (or new to us) patio is a lovely place to take breakfast. The owners very kindly prepared a wonderful afternoon tea for us, to celebrate a family birthday, and all of our visitors, children included, had a great afternoon, and all carefully prepared with safety in mind. We found the food lovely all week, very fresh and home-made, and the service was very pleasant. There was constant cleaning and airing, but it was not intrusive and the atmosphere was calm. A last point: incase you think this hotel only appeals to more mature folk, my young and fairly trendy son stayed with us for several days and absolutely loved it, in particular our after-dinner coffees in the drawing room as the sun set. I would love to spend longer here, Miss Marple-style.....a very civilised place. Thanks to all for a lovely stay.

This is a very nice hotel, brilliant location near the sea and friendly staff. My husband and I had the Duchess Suite which was a bit disappointing. There is a huge cupboard in there which was unnecessary as there was plenty of wardrobe and cupboard space in the modern unit. It needs to be replaced by a sofa as it is situated just across from the TV. My daughter and her family had the Henry Suite which was really something else - a spacious, light, newly furnished room with a wonderful ensuite and nice garden views. We were disappointed that the hotel had not registered for the Eat Out to Help Out scheme. The evening meals are very expensive but with the money off we may have gone for it. The biggest disappointment, though, was that the swimming pool was not open although swimming pools across the country had been allowed to open a few weeks previous to our stay. I really do not see any reason why this swimming pool should have remained closed. There could have been a booking system allowing just one family at a time for say, an hour's swim. There were quite alot of young families staying at the hotel who , like our own grand children, would no doubt be disappointed with this poor decisiion to keep the pool closed. We could at least have been offered a reduction in price as the brochure and the website include the swimming pool as an attraction. The poor weather this week would have made the swimming pool even more attractive.

Thank you for making a review. Every one is taken into consideration comprehensively. We are very disappointed to not have the pool up and running it was all in order in March, there are many other considerations apart from only having 3 persons in at a time for its size. The governments eat out initiative ... Again has many considerations to make before participating . Our evening dining is based on local fresh produce from local farms and fish from Lyme Bay. We would like to extend our menu choice without detracting from freshness and will work on this as we move out of 2020. We are pleased Henry suite was enjoyed; all the rooms are so different from one another, and that you enjoyed the Glen’s situation and general ambience. We are so happy to be back up and welcoming you All .

This was our first visit to the Royal Glen and we thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of the experience. The staff make everyone feel very welcome and they were particularly good with families and young children. The room we had, called Henry, as huge, well equipped and fitted with a superbly clean and modern bathroom. Breakfasts were all of a very high standard: we had full English, haddock and kippers on the various mornings and all used high quality ingredients. The evening meals were also both very good value for money as well as changing every night, even the desserts changed and were also well chosen. We particularly liked the vegetables, which were cooked to perfection. The bar was well stocked and Michael was an entertaining barman! We used the very clean swimming pool, which was great, as well as the small gym. We were able to park without any problems at all. Obviously the historic nature of the grade 1 listed building provides some idiosyncrasies, all perfectly acceptable and most interesting. This is a happy hotel and we would recommend it without hesitation for those wanting a traditional break in traditional style.

Stayed here for a four night break in early October. Reception very friendly and room (The Duke Room) spotless. Covid precautions were excellent with a one way system still in operation and sanitiser readily available. Dinner and breakfast were all table service and food quality was of a very high standard. Lounges were comfortable and quiet places to relax in. Just a two minute walk to the Esplanade. Only one slight drawback was the car park which at times was difficult to use because of the layout. If you want high class old fashioned service, then this is for you - no rush and nothing too much trouble. We would highly recommend this hotel and found Sidmouth a quaint and interesting town with good walks and small individual shops.

It says on the hotel description Classic English Elegance. This couldn't be further from the truth. The reality is Tired and Outdated. I don't think our room had been cleaned in months, it was full of spiders and cobwebs. The furniture belonged on the tip and the decor was tired and shabby. The dining room was utterly soulless with very bad piped music playing. I struggled to choose from the menu as it was very limited food on offer. I didn't have a starter and my main course went back as it was inedible. The staff are trying their hardest with what seems to be a struggling hotel in need of a business plan. During lockdown a thorough clean and sprucing up of the rooms wouldn't have gone amiss. The only room that was passable was one of the sitting rooms that had obviously been recently refurbished.I know it is difficult times but I felt totally ripped off for the money I paid (although my main meal was deducted from the bill).

Thank you for making a review and giving your feedback. We are sorry that your fish dish was not how you would have liked, we remember the meal. Our menu is small but using all fresh local produce especially Lyme Bay Fish, Local Beef, Pork, Venison, Guinea Foul and Chicken; home cooked Ham. However the menu changes daily and is a small choice as it is all fresh. We hope to extend our menu in the future when that is possible in staffing and social distancing levels in the workplace behind the scenes. Music is very personal,we try and cover a very wide genre from classical to light popular and in between. Every winter a massive amount of energy and re-investment is ploughed back into the 1600 building which was done in 2019/20 and we will be planning our 20/21 when it becomes apparent what the future holds but suffice to say that it is a family hotel that has updated every year whilst trying not to take away the ambiance of a country home that many returning visitors dont want us to change too much. We have a good mix of rooms with antique restored furniture and also contemporary rooms in the Jubilee wing. We would always encourage Guests to phone and discuss their requirements because all the rooms do differ. Cleaning measures at the moment are even more critical than ever and a strict regime of clean and sanitise is carried out every day and even more thoroughly on departure/ arrival. We are pleased you enjoyed the Drawing Room, and hopefully had time to sit and enjoy the new patio and views towards the esplanade.
