Booked the Esplanade Hotel with Daish's as a self drive from the 14th till 18th September. Never been to Scarborough before but done self drive holidays with Daish's to their other hotels. On arrival at reception we had a temperature check, booking in was very swift, but we weren't given a welcome envelope like at other Daish's hotels, which seemed strange. We had booked a sea view twin room in advance so were delighted to be given room 357 on the 3rd floor. The room had a great view overlooking the sea front. Bedroom was basic but had spotlessly clean bed linen and bathroom had fluffy white towels. The towels were changed as often as you needed and there was plenty of hot water. Queued at the dining room for our first evening meal at 6.30pm. On entering the restaurant we were shown to our table and were lucky enough to have a beautiful view of Scarborough from our table. The meals we had for the duration were more than ok but there were hiccups along the way with food coming out cold on a Wednesday (due to it being the chefs day off), many thanks to Steve our waiter (and barman) for the good service. The hotel has lots of places to sit and chill out and also has an outdoor terrace. The evenings of live entertainment were all very good, starting off with Bingo followed by a variety of singing, magic and comedy. If visiting this hotel you must remember that Daish's only bought it just before lockdown so haven't been able to renovate it yet. Yes the decor is tired, yes the windows need replacing, but this all takes time so you have to bear with them at the moment. Staff were great, we met some lovely people during our stay which made the holiday extra special. Definitely will be returning.

We had room seven . Third floor with view of the abbey. The welcome was warm and friendly. The bed had two mattresses clipped together making it a larger bed than normal double. Room was clean, well furnished and recently decorated. The shower was excellent and large. The basin was exceptionally small but you could fill the kettle from the cold tap and we showered daily anyway. Quite rightly breakfast was brought up and left outside the room between seven thirty and eight. In covid cooked break fast would have been risky. We loved the bag of fruit, cheese, eggs, fruit, cereal bars etc. So much we finished it for dinner! I can't answer questions about parking as we came by train. The tv was too small for the room.

This hotel is badly in need of updating. It seems to be stuck in the 1980s in its decor. The large wooden window frames in my room were flaking, and a breeze was coming through the closed bathroom window. The curtains didn’t fully cover the window, meaning a street lamp directly outside illuminated my room at night (picture below).

The bathroom windows are not opaque, and all that protects your privacy is net curtains! When I pointed this out to the Deputy Manager, he didn’t seem bothered, told me there was nothing they could do, and said that no one else had ever brought this up. The General Manager later apologised, showed professional empathy, and did assist me in having a temporary cover in my elderly mum’s room.

The shower unit had nowhere to put shower gel, and the unit was not in a great condition. That said, the water pressure was very good and the water was warm enough.

My room was very spacious, with plenty of storage space. The mattress was a bit thin but comfortable enough.

Most of the staff were helpful and friendly. Indeed, they were very patient with my elderly mum and her needs.

Breakfast was not included and charged additionally at £10 a head. This wasn’t made clear when we checked in. When it came to paying, the Restaurant Manager told Reception we had eaten two breakfasts each, and I was charged twice! They did this because we had booked a double room, without bothering to check the records to see we were single occupancies.

Overall, not entirely impressed. Needs updating, but more importantly, it needs staff training.

The Esplanade’s location is second to none, offering breathtaking views of both the South Bay and the castle. It is well worth the £10pp extra for a room with a sea view as the view is outstanding both during the day and at night.
The floor to ceiling curtains with matching armchairs were delightful and the beds were so comfortable and spotlessly clean..
There was plenty of choice on the menus to suit every taste and the food was very good quality and well cooked. All the staff were friendly, helpful and hard working.
If the guests have mobility issues, there is a flat and easy way into town by crossing the bridge and turning right but there are plenty of taxis and the Cliff Tramway is close by to transport people to the beach. We have visited many Daish’s hotels and none has been a disappointment, The Esplanade has to be our favourite, however.

The hotel is in desperate need of improvement in many ways and had we not paid in advance we wouldn’t have stayed. There’s no parking and street parking had to be paid for despite the hotel indicating some parking was available, and the receptionist was rude. The room was very tatty with rotten windows, old furnishings and tatty curtains & tie backs. The hospitality tray was filthy and we were given paper cups which weren’t ever changed during our stay and the bed was a hard as a rock. The bathroom was very dark and dated back to the 1980’s, a disgusting shower curtain and mould growth around the bath. There was no welcome pack so didn’t know timings for breakfast which was served in the function room as non-coach party guests weren’t allowed in the dining room. The breakfasts were extremely poor, the food looked like it had been thrown on the plates and was tepid as was the pot of tea. We were also given dirty pots which were sent back to the kitchen. We stopped having a cooked breakfast as a consequence. Extremely poor quality, & believe this hotel is geared up for the make do and mend generation. However, I am still working hard for my money and my expectations are quite a lot higher for the price that is being charged. To top it off the management of the Covid situation also left a lot to be desired. Please alos check out my photos and stay away!

The Esplanade like many other hotels in the area is an old Victorian building.
It sits at the head of the hill looking over the South Bay and down towards the harbour and Scarborough Castle beyond.
Recently renovated the Esplanade is an old quirky building with dated furnishings, however it has a clean and airy atmosphere.
The beds were comfortable with lovely soft pillows and there was ample storage for your clothes and personal items.
A hairdryer is provided as well as a free view tv
and a kettle along with tea and coffee.
Sea view rooms are available, the best being in the first floor as these have large french doors that open out onto a shared balcony that provides excellent views.
The restaurant situated on the lower ground floor has limited sea views
The breakfast was very good with a good selection of choices available however the service can be a-bit haphazard leading to long waiting times.
Back on the ground floor, there is a bar area leading out onto a large terrace above the restaurant which has fantastic views over the bay.
So, all in all a very nice stay, clean and comfortable with excellent views.
Take as seen and you won’t be disappointed.

I begin by stating I have not actually stayed at the hotel yet. However, my comments are regarding my experience with the staff/management. I made the reservation direct with the hotel. The receptionist went to great lengths to explain each individual room, it's character, views, etc. We were then able to book the actual room by room number and, thereby, know what we were paying for. The receptionist did this with the utmost patience and courtesy plus the booking process over the phone was flawless.
Unfortunately we had to cancel due to health reasons. Ryan, who handled our cancellation, was not only polite and sympathetic, but also very efficient. The refund was made immediately, uncomplicated and with no fuss.
I have already made arrangements to re-book later in the year.
It is important to consider that a hotel's staff can be a deciding factor when making a choice of hotel, hence my review.

Good visit, great location the whalebone is literally at the bottom of the road. Hotel still gave us a breakfast during the pandemic, delivered outside our door every morning before 9am always had a yoghurt, coffee and a bun or the fruit even boiled eggs which I love! Room was very clean with bright white lights which I always appreciate. Bed was probably a little old so I kept my boyfriend up all night telling him to not roll over in his sleep haha! Only negative is the hotel does not include on site parking. The hotel owner will give you a street parking permit from the hotel but I'm not a great driver so I can't parrel park so we paid to park in the local council car park 2 minute walk away behind the hotel £9 for 24hr. The owners are lovely and talk to you with their little dog. We even had a takeaway in the front living room and downloaded a film to watch as the WiFi just didn't reach our room right at the top of the house which was 3 flights of steps but you're in Whitby so it'll just add to your sixteen thousand steps you'll do in a day anyway. Ha wish we had time to write in the visitors book sorry we forgot! Would return if we was back in Whitby. Oh and there's a off license and boots at the bottom of the road as you turn right and then your in the town centre down the hill to the front shops. Didn't take photos of the hotel as no issues.

After reading the previous reviews, I was cynical about booking this hotel but I'm so glad we did. Before arriving, I had emailed the hotel beforehand as I am on crutches and ideally needed a room on a low floor, as I am not crazy about lifts! The hotel took this into consideration and we were allocated a room on the first floor, near to the stairs, so I was extremely happy about this. The room was large and spacious and the first thing I saw when I walked in was the magnificent, panoramic view from the large window, which overlooked the whole of the bay and town. After that, everything else faded into insignificance. Yes there were parts of the room that were dated and would benefit from an upgrade but the public areas were perfectly fine and the beds were lovely and comfy. The breakfast was good and the food quality excellent and it was served red hot. I think at busier times and weekends, the hot breakfast is buffet style but we were there when it was pretty quiet and it was was served to the table. The hotel has a small car park but I imagine on-road parking could be a problem at busier times but that is not exclusive to this hotel, it seems to be a problem at guest houses and hotels throughout the whole of Scarborough! Overall a lovely stay and we would not hesitate to return.

I have stayed in this hotel for over 15 years and this was my first visit this year in August. . I have got to admit it has really gone downhill, firstly the room was in need of decoration and updating. Secondly I was told I would be served my breakfast in the ballroom, which was not really acceptable given that the hotel had been purchased by a tour company and the people on these tours were being served meals in the dining room and all other clients were shoved into a ballroom. The breakfast was not good, everything was served at the same time, so you got your cereal and fruit juices whilst your so called cooked breakfast (which to me looked like it had been stood for a while, the bacon was tough and the egg was solid) was served at the same time, all on the table together. I had already booked a further two days stay for later in August and was really going to cancel but I needed to be there for my grand daughters birthday so decided to give it one more try. Well it had improved a little, problem was you were still expected to have our breakfast in the ballroom, you had a very restricted time to have your breakfast served but the hot cooked breakfast was now served separately but apart from this nothing else had improved. I will have to seriously think about staying at this hotel in the future which is a great pity as it is in such a good spot so near to the centre of Scarborough and some of the sea view rooms have such fantastic views.
