Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We have stayed at The Chequers Hotel on two other occasions and we have had very pleasant stays. Sadly, our experience this time was not great. On checking in we were informed that Christmas parties were happening every night and the music, although loud, would stop at 11 p.m. This wasn't true, it was midnight and our room was right above the party area. We did not get a good night's sleep. Bathroom radiator was not working. On reporting to reception I was told there were no other rooms. I had to leave the towels off the towel rail to get a little warmth (therefore no warm towels) and used a towel to block the draught from the bottom of the windows. Not great. The hot water failed...these things happen....and the hotel had it fixed fairly quickly. It was just unfortunate that it happened when we already had a cold morning (freezing weather) to wake up to and a cold bathroom. We were offered 20% discount on the cost of the room for the night because of the water issue. My issues are the cold bathroom radiator when the weather was freezing and the fact that we had not been advised of the late finishing time of the music and the bad sleep just enhanced our feelings of disappointment with the stay. I made a complaint to the manager and he took note of our problems and said he would investigate and call me back the following day. Today I had a message and was told the most they could offer was £30 which included the discount already offered. I am not happy, but am told the offer is final. There are some positives about this hotel, especially the location, but it is a shame the good points are now overshadowed by disappointment.

Good staff great location but the room was disappointing mold growing round the door and window and in the bathroom. The hot water was on and off and didn’t work one morning due to a boiler fault. The breakfast was poor not brilliant food and just warm. Location and free parking for guest great.

My family recently held a wake for my late father in the conference room. All of the staff were kind, friendly, welcoming and helpful. Organisation of the event was made easy by Steph. The food provided (afternoon tea) was fantastic and plentiful, with really tasty gluten free options as well. The hotel bar, conference and lounge areas were modern, comfortable and smart. We’re very grateful to the all the Chequers team for making the day run so smoothly.

This hotel is an absolute gem, located on Oxford Road with easy access to the main shopping area on main street. Rooms are very spacious and well oppointed with all luxuries you would need for your stay. The bar area is well designed and has a very well stocked bar. The menue is well constructed to provide fare for all tastes. The crowning factor with this venue it the reception and front of house staff. As soon as you enter you are welcomed with a large smile and a cheery voice welcoming you to their hotel. They are very knowledgeable about the local area and its amenities. It is obvious that they are all well experienced and have recieved expert training.

We recently stayed at The Chequers for one night after visiting Highclere Castle. It was a particularly special visit and weekend for me as my partner proposed at the castle! It was made even more special with staying at The Chequers. We were greeted by a friendly receptionist, and our room overlooked the courtyard which is very pretty at night. Our room was clean, nicely furnished and everything we could wish for. There was some loud music at night which I think came from the pub nearby but it didn't go on too long. We ate dinner in the hotel restaurant which was lovely, and the breakfast was superb! It had everything we wanted and we were stuffed as we checked out. Overall a fantastic stay and we'd definitely visit again.

The room we were given was shabby, the windows were covered in pigeon excrement. The noise from the pigeons was still noticeable at 03:00 in the morning. We were only staying for one night, so made the best of it. The breakfast was very pleasant and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The part of the hotel we were staying in reminded us of an old people’s home.

We were in 214. Firstly, the receptionist with the long bob miserable and unfriendly. “Rooms not ready”, not “welcome to the chequers hotel, your rooms not ready yet but you’re welcome to have a cup of tea”. When we came back to check in she just said “what’s your name “, not “can I take your name please”. “Here’s your key, on the second floor, breakfast is 7-9”. We had a dirty towel in the room which the girl that came to collect was very apologetic and helpful. She would be better on reception. Breakfast was really nice and the Maitre D was really friendly and the waiting staff also. Came back to reception to check out and the woman that was being trained looked up and said “thanks very much, have a nice day”. However, the other one didn’t even look up and just said “bye”. In my opinion if you got rid of her it would be a much nicer place. £94.50 overpriced. Please do something about that reception because she will be the reason people get a bad impression.

Don't be fooled. This place is nothing like the website pictures, they have clearly been air brushed. The rooms are not in good condition and the place is not clean. Carpets look like they need a good hoover. The shower goes cold the scorching hot, very dangerous when washing your hair. I would not recommend this place

The room was boiling hot as the large towel radiator was on full heat even though the outside temperature was 24C. No aircon available. The staff told me that radiators could not be regulated individually, and they refused to turn them off (or down) for all rooms. Apparently, they have newer rooms that are not affected by this. Otherwise the hotel is good. I had a very large room, staff was well trained and super friendly, and the location is good.
