At Donnington Valley Hotel, Golf & Spa, guests often commend the spotless rooms for their cleanliness and coziness, although the decor does garner criticism for being dated and the air conditioning system for being less than ideal. The hotel's location is generally appreciated for its tranquility and welcoming nature; however, a few have pointed out concerns with the room layouts and connectivity. While some visitors consider the pricing to be fair, others question the value received.
The spa and dining options are highlights for many travelers, despite occasional inconsistencies in the amenities and service, which can range from warm and attentive to slow. The overall atmosphere of the hotel is frequently described as pleasant, with particular praise for the relaxed dining areas, although there is a sentiment that certain spaces could benefit from an update or a livelier vibe.

Detailed Reviews
I received a gift voucher for the Donnington Valley from my partner for our anniversary.
When booking our stay and treatments there appeared to be a little disconnect with the spa and main hotel, we were a little disappointed before our trip with this and how are spa treatments were being move and weren't offered to choose treatments. We contacted the hotel about this and they were extremely understanding and accommodating and in the end have a lovely weekend break.
The reception and bar are really well decorated and rooms a nice size and very comfortable. We especially liked the touch of bathrobes and slippers as standard in the rooms and stocking of The White Company products in rooms and wellness center, as well as GHD hairdryers and straighteners.
The spa is lovely and quiet away from the rest of hustle and bustle of the hotel. Stay were so attentive, relaxation room clean and tidy and our treatments of a high standard.
If we had a negative over the weekend it would have been our dinner. The portion size and quality did not match its price tag, which was a little disappointing. The wine list and drinks menu had a good choice.
Overall it was a pleasant stay and would be happy to go back again.

Spent one night at the hotel and attended a dinner/dance there. The hotel is very clean with good facilities and friendly staff. Our executive double room was a good size, with a comfortable bed, large bathroom with separate bath and shower, and a view over the surrounding countryside. It had a small fridge with bottled water and fresh milk for tea/coffee. Bath robes and slippers provided.
We used the pool which is a good size, there is also a sauna, steam room and aroma room, plus a small jacuzzi. Restricted times for children.
Our dinner was a fixed menu, and considering the large number of guests it was reasonable quality. We had to send our pate back as it was dry, but it was quickly replaced. Fish was a little over-cooked, and the beef wellington was on the tough side. Service was very good. Wines a little on the expensive side (Malbec £33), but very smooth.
When we have been to these events before the dancing and dinner have been in the same room, but here they were in different areas, so you had to find seating again. Band was good, with a nice party atmosphere.

Response from DonningtonValleyTeam, General Manager at Donnington Valley Hotel, Golf & Spa
Responded 17 Jan 2020
Dear We_Love_Sun_Days Thank you for your review of New Years Eve, I am very pleased that you enjoyed your bedroom and the Spa facilities; it sounds like you were in one of our Executive rooms with the separate bath and shower. I was sorry to hear however that you didn't enjoy your dinner that evening, we are in the process of planning this years festive events and menus and will certainly take your comments on board as we finalise all the detail. I o agree with you that the Band were great, everyone loved them and the true testament is that the dance floor was full all night !!! if you would like to re visit, please do contact Tracey in Guest Services guestservices@donningtonvalley.co.uk and she will be very happy to discuss any further stay and returning guest rates with you.

We had a really nice overnight stay at the Donnington. The room was spacious, clean and modern with a nice patio area outside if it wasn't too cold to sit out there. The first day we were there the spa was far too busy so didn't get a chance to go into the jacuzzi. The hotel was fully booked. The second day we went early in the morning and managed to enjoy the facilities - jacuzzi was powerful and steam room, sauna and aroma room all good. I also had some good treatments. A couple suggestions would be that hooks are put up outside the sauna and steam room areas as there was no where to hang the bath robe when going into each room.
The food was really good. Breakfast had great variety. Dinner was ok though some items seemed a bit pricy for what they were - thinking the onion and cheese tart which was not great. The service was very good.
Overall, we would love to come back.

I booked this hotel for my 25th wedding anniversary as we had a spa break here last year and it was perfect, the room, the spa and the food!
I thought it would be good to book it as a surprise for my wife for our 25th wedding anniversary and to upgrade the room to suite, after all it’s not often that you reach this milestone. I know there is a pandemic and there are extra safety measures in place but I certainly did not get the ‘special’ feeling this time round. The room as expected was big, however we had paper cups for coffee/ tea and glass tumblers for cold drinks, a couple of cups would have made a big difference. The breakfast was a let down, I expected continental served in our room as per the confirmation email, I imagined a tray with bakery goods, jams, yoghurts a pot of filter coffee with plates and cutlery, after all I had booked suite. NO it was a box similar to a KFC rice box with a croissant wrapped in plastic - obviously due to COVID but a muffin that was just rattling around in the box not wrapped? I could not serve my wife a KFC box for breakfast on her 25th wedding anniversary, I don’t think I would have made it to my 26th! I cancelled all restaurant booking at the hotel and we decided to go into town for breakfast, to find that all restaurants were serving breakfast on proper plates and cutlery, they had all the health and safety in place and were also doing track and trace...if these restaurants can cope and provide the same service now as pre covid why can’t this hotel?
The special bit was when a bottle of bubbly was delivered to our room NOT from the hotel but from our friends!
In summary nice room, didn’t feel special, total let down and disappointment not worth the money.

Massages shorten by half because they got delayed with their own room cleanings. Breakfast was served in a plastic bag left on the floor in from of the room door, consisting of packaged items that looked and tasted like as if they were from Poundland! No freshly cooked food. On top of that, they don’t even give you a coffee in the morning, they charge it extra at £5! Even london is cheaper than that. Rooms were ok, but the towels were dirty! Terrible.

Thank you for taking the time to leave some comments of the recent stay you had with us. We are able to offer a freshly cooked bacon, sausage or egg bap which is delivered to you at the same time you requested your Continental Breakfast Box which comes inside a Donnington Valley Holdall. You can request freshly ground and speciality coffees as room service to your room should you not want to use the coffee & tea provided on trays in all our rooms. I do apologise if there was an issue with a dirty towel this is not usual, our towels are laundered with a reputable company and we will take this up with them, if brought to our attention fresh towels would be provided. with regards

It gives me no pleasure leaving such a grim review but I wish we had known these issues before staying here. We stayed with friends for four nights. The room needed a good clean as there was a film of dust on everything, even the phone handset. The view of the golf course would have been nice if we could see out of the window covered in bird droppings. The carpet was covered in old stains. The couch looked grubby. We had one pillow each, no spares were provided. The shower ran hot/cold. Our friends had the same issues in their room. The toilet brush is probably one of the most revolting I have ever seen. The toilet flush was very stiff, you needed to use two hands to compress the flush. We were told they are 'all like that'. The rooms were not being serviced. I was told this was to 'keep me safe'. I suspect this really due to a shortage of staff. The breakfast was entirely self service including making your own tea. There was very minimal hot food (egg & bacon). At breakfast the dining room staff looked bored, they need some training on how to clear a table. We ate one evening meal in the hotel as the standard of the food was so poor for the price. The bar staff were really nice as were the drinks. This was a huge disappointment for a 4 star hotel charging nearly £300 per night. During our stay we did mention some of the issues to the reception staff. The cups were changed after our request and the bins emptied. We later complained to the hotel manager who apologised about a couple of the problems. The manager told us the rest of the issues were our fault for not complaining at the time. Its such a shame as this could be a lovely place to stay.

Dear Gallus G I did speak with you on the telephone after receiving your letter. I am not aware of some of these points you make however, as discussed we have spare pillows in all of our room wardrobes and if more are needed or feather are preferred we would get these to the room for you; all of our rooms can be serviced on request. We did go through all of your points however, if you wish to discuss this matter further then please do not hesitate to contact me. Kind Regards Guest Services Manager

The standard of service and cleanliness in this hotel is shocking.
Despite Covid 19 an old plaster was found in the bathroom. The room had a red seal of cleanliness when we arrived and was believed to have been cleaned!
The breakfast is in a box and cold when you eat it in your room even if you order hot rolls which is an extra charge. There were no cups to have drinks on a daily basis.
This is not a 4 star hotel but a 1-2 star rating!!
The bedside lamps are old and dirty.
Extremely poor hotel and staff who did not listen.

We have just returned from a lovely few days at this hotel, our first since lockdown! I have to say even though restrictions have been lifted they were still implementing many Covid precautions which is absolutely great in my book. They didn’t insist on you following their guidelines but just recommended them. Because of this we felt very happy and much safer. The hotel was spotlessly clean, the staff were very friendly and helpful and the food in the restaurant was excellent, as was the service. There is an outside eating area which is really nice and they have heaters outside if it is a bit chilly. There is a spa which we didn’t use because we weren’t quite ready for that and there is a golf course. The bedrooms were spacious, very quiet and had tea/coffee making facilities, a safe and an ironing board and iron, also complimentary dressing gowns. I would highly recommend this hotel and if we visit this area again we would definitely stay here. We stayed here to visit Highclere Castle (Downton Abbey) which was close by.

Attended this event as a group of 10. We arrived at hotel at noon to make use of spa facilities for a one night stay. Pleasantly surprised our room was available. Had lunch and spent a very pleasant few hours in the spa which looked like it had been refurbished recently. Our executive room on the ground floor was extremely comfortable with fridge and fresh milk. Walk in shower and bath with White company products, and had patio doors.
The champagne cocktail reception was excellent with lovely canapés, this was followed by a six course dinner and live band to dance to. It was a wonderful evening, the staff everywhere could not have been nicer or more obliging and seemed very happy in their jobs. All the staff and management were helpful, courteous and eager to make sure everything was right. Alan the restaurant manager was lovely and Karen the general manager was a delight. This hotel has high standards and congratulate them on their customer service. There is usually someone in our group of friends
That can find something to complain about, but this time there was nothing and they are a fussy lot ! Already thinking about planning next New Year’s Eve here !!!

We (2 couples), have just returned from a fantastic New Year break, this hotel goes above and beyond with their service and attention to detail,
On arrival our first thoughts were the place needs a renovation, the rooms are quite small and dark, however very clean, warm and with every amenity you require, the communal areas again very dark due to the amount of dark wood, and a lack of comfortable seating, a few sofas dotted around would be a good addition.
But, that was all quickly put to one side once we settled in, due to the wonderful attentive staff, nothing was too much trouble, and absolutley no shortage of staff.
The New Years eve party was a great success, the food was fabulous thanks to head chef Darren and his team, who we all had the pleasure of meeting after the meal, and the party continued into the small hours. On NY Day we were greeted at the restaurant door by Management wishing us a Happy New Year and offering Bucks Fizz, a really nice "touch" given how busy they had been the night before!
Sarah the Breakfast Manager is a lovely warm friendly person and was so helpful, also a mention for Chris who took care of us in the restaurant on NY day, where we again were served an excellent meal, the food here is really good.
The Spa facility is also very good, a good size pool and gym, and my friend and I had a lovely treatment in the beauty rooms, whilst the men played golf, which is also good, though bit muddy at this time of year, but they cant be blamed for that given the rain we've recently had?
Lastly, thank you to Tracey the Guest Service Manager, who does her very best to make sure all guests are happy and well looked after.
We shall certainly be back later this year !

Yes, we had to book a slot to use the swimming pool. From memory there was a time limit but can’t recall for how long.
we stayed recently and you got no discount on treatments. however you get to use the large spa pool, sauna etc for free while you stay which is excellent. the treatments were very very good.
I don't think so. We didn't see any pets during our stay.
