Having had our Spanish holiday cut short due circumstances beyond our control, we were flown to luton airport instead of Stansted late evening so had to find a hotel room at short notice. So booked into the Thistle Express which is less than 2 miles away from Luton airport, what a gem it is, staff are pleasant and helpful, our room was spacious and clean no kettle provided as free fresh coffee and a large selection of teas are available at the reception area 24 /7 along with cold beers, wine and soft drinks, great sleep In a comfortable bed, iron, ironing board, hair dryer and wall safe. Breakfast was an unexpected treat, full English buffet and loads extra's, vegetarian breakfast cooked to order, great experience, having never stopped at a Thistle Express before was unsure what to expect from the budget chain but was pleasantly surprised and will certainly use it again, would recommend it

My stay at the Thistle Hotel in Luton was wonderful. I do agree with a couple of other reviewers, the hotel is a little harder to find, especially if you’re arriving later in the evening, especially if you’re not familiar with the area. Booking in was easy and the staff were helpful, professional and friendly.

After booking and reading some of the comments, I have to admit to being a little worried about my stay. However after arrival at the hotel, these concerns were short-lived, I have to question some of the negative points I have read as personally I found the hotel to be very well decorated, clean and well presented. The staff couldn’t have been more welcoming, they were professional and friendly. On the whole they were very hospitable, which made me feel completely at ease and very comfortable in and around the hotel.

It has to be noted that it is a town center location and therefore, as with any town or city center, you have to have be aware of safety, when out and about late at night. Unlike a couple of other remarks, in the 5 days I stayed at the hotel, I didn’t come across any dubious characters around the hotel and I felt safe at all times. Being a smoker I stood outside the hotel on many occasions during my visit, the hotel staff were frequently cleaning the area and checking on the vehicles in the car park.

The public areas, lifts and hallway were all very clean and well decorated. The room I stayed in was just perfect; it was fresh, clean and well maintained. The bathroom was in good order, a lovely cast iron bath and shower, with plenty of room for all your toiletries. Bath and shower gel are provided and are of a good quality. There was a shaver point and even one for the toothbrush. There were extras in the room, that aren’t always provided by some, an Iron, Ironing board and hairdryer for example and even a safe.

The bedding was crisp and clean, my only issue was the lack of pillows (only one), saying that, a simple call or visit to reception and extras were gladly provided.
I’m not sure if it was due to Covid19, but during my stay 4 day there was no room service, so things like change of towels, the making of the bed and emptying the bin wasn’t done. I can only assume that these can be requested and I doubt there would have been any problems asking. There was a very efficient radiator in the room, and the towels were dry by the evening anyway.

With the coronavirus restrictions breakfast was collected at reception in a bag. There was a lovely bacon bap, pastries, croissants, butter and jam and a bag of fresh fruit. On the first day it included a cartoon of fruit juice, it would have been nice every day. Everything was very fresh and the bacon was wonderful, excellent quality. Tea and coffee are always available at reception, you do have to ask each time, but it’s always served with a smile.

I will definitely be staying again. Thanks

Stayed here for 1 night. Hotel is basically based in a shopping Mall in the town centre so great location for shopping, restaurants and bars but like most city centres some parts seemed rough. There was a chargeable car park and check-in was quick & easy with the reception just consisting of a column desk.
As you enter the room there was a full length mirror followed by an open hanging area with a small open cupboard inside, a safe on top of the cupboard and a hair dryer inside the cupboard. Then there was a desk with a flat-screen TV and a circular mirror above. The double bed was comfortable with a headboard that had a bedside shelf & a lamp either side.
Breakfast was in the area where the reception column was and the area consisted of plenty of seating areas of padded seats and bar stool type communal seating. Tea/coffee & water was complimentary availble 24 hrs. Breakfast was buffet style from a small room which made social distancing a challenge at peak times but hot & cold food was available with an adequate variety but at times with a wait for replenishing.

The amount and quality provided is astonishing. I have stayed in multiple hotels but none were so keen to help their customers and make sure they have a comfortable stay as this one does. Many thanks to Andrea who provided a flawless check-in, quick and informative. Alberto and Valentina were very quick in helping with the various requests, such as extra towels, bedsheets and what not, which is always appreciated. Now to icing on the cake. The night shift...Sunny and Gabriel? Best staff I've ever encountered, quick, effective and overall providing a 5 star level or service at all times. Breakfast is top notch with freshly cooked bacon and the typical English breakfast. The 2 coffee machines provided at the reception are an awesome addition. This place really deserves your attention if you're looking for a good reliable hotel next to the Luton Airport. 10/10 would recommend. (also just 15 mins away by bus to Luton, no need to spend 20£ for a taxi)

I went to Thistle Express Luton on Thursday, September 23rd 2021 in order to spend a night and catch my flight to Dublin the next day.

When I arrived at the hotel, I was informed that because of a careless mistake of mine the reservation was made for December 23rd instead of September 23rd. I was shocked. I asked the receptionist what we could do and she told me that the only way I could stay was to pay 70£ for a night.
I explained her my concerns and she told me that it was up to Booking.com if they would change the dates and the reservation.

I called Booking.com immediately and they accepted to change it. Then, they called the hotel to inform them, and the receptionist said that the room price would be 80£ for the night and we would have to pay the price difference.

I asked her why she wants 80£ now when earlier the rate was 70£ and said that this was the best price she could make in case I paid the whole amount and not just the difference.

When I told her that I’d like to speak to the manager, she said “I am the manager”
Again, I tried very politely to explain to her that the rate was the same if the booking was made for the next day or the next 3 months, but nothing.
Then, I searched rooms on agoda.com for the next day and the price was 58£. I politely asked to pay that difference instead of what she was asking, which was double the amount of money of the room rate, but once again she refused to hear me out.

When I requested to get a refund she said that I could pay 30£ (70£ – what I had already paid) and that I could have late check out (she thought she was fooling me by offering “late checkout” which was only an hour later). Not knowing what else to do, having nowhere else to go and being unable to find another hotel room in the middle of the night I decided to pay the difference even though I knew she was taking advantage of me.

She was very unpleasant and quite frankly rude. I explained my concerns and that her yet she still took advantage of me because of my mistake and my desperation to find a place to stay.

It is not acceptable to take advantage of people in need and charge twice the amount of money for a simple room. The room rate is standard for all bookings made either for the next day or for the next month.

The next morning ,housekeeping knocked on my door, this was before my check out time, in order to tell me that checkout time was 30 minutes ago (that’s not true because I had a late checkout).

The hotel room was dirty and very run down, it did not seem very clean at all. It also smelled like urine. There was a cobweb in the door and the carpets were dirty. Surprisingly, breakfast was very tasty - freshly cooked bacon and sausages either in a bun or in fresh bread, pastry and various jams.

I spent one night in this hotel, choosing it for its proximity to the town centre and the shopping mall. But it was surrounded by people drinking, and taking drugs. A man approached us asking for money and it was scary.

I am extremely disappointed with my stay at the hotel.

Dear Demepapa, I am sorry to hear that we could not meet your expectations on this occasion. Upon check in My colleagues should have explain to you that the rate were different from one day to another and that booking for 3 months ahead and even more on 23rd of December would be much cheaper than on the day rate. I honestly believe that her intention was never to take advantage of yourself but she followed the rate of the day. I will remind the team to be more emphatic when exceptional situation arise. I will pick up your feedback about the room cleanliness with our housekeeping team as this is not the feedback we aim to get. In spite of this, I am glade to see that you enjoyed our breakfast selection. We have kept improving the offer and I hope you will be back as I am confident we can meet your expectations Kind regards Mathieu

I would like to thank the management and staff on my recent stay in thier Adapted disabled room, in all my years home and abroad these were the best laid out fascilities I have come across in a hotel room, the bathroom wet floor shower allowed me to shower without fear of tripping or falling as there were grab rails in the whole bathroom.
Well laid out hotel, good amenities , nice breakfast and free tea and coffee 24 hours a day was a luxurious added bonus….Thankyou Thistle.
I would like to again thank management and all staff running and managing it, a shout out to Danesh, what a cool young man, nothing to much trouble for him, helped me out at breakfast if needed carrying things to the table because of my disabilities, all in a non over judgmental way, just done with kindness. From such a young man.
Thankyou again and hope to return again.

My husband, 3 year old and I stayed here for a week while visiting London.

PROS
Breakfast was delicious! Every day we had a buffet option of eggs, English bacon, sausage, beans, hash browns, toast, croissants, and more.

Television! Though not a lot of channel options, it was nice just to have the options in English.

Close to the train station, mall, and restaurants. We were able to catch a train into London every day. On days we wanted to eat closer to the hotel, we had a lot of options to choose from. My husband enjoyed being able to go to the gym as well.

CONS
Parking is not free and can be difficult to find. At £10/day, it’s pretty expensive. They do let you know that parking at the mall, which is practically connected, is cheaper but we arrived at 2am so that wasn’t really an option.

The room and bathroom were very small. It was hard for us to give our son a bath or help him brush his teeth because we could barely fit.

No kitchenette/ microwave/ fridge. This really only pertains to families if you need to keep anything cold like milk or water.

To start with, staying in August in this hotel when it's over 22 degrees outside I was so grateful that there was an Aircon unit in the room. I then went to operate the unit and it lit up but didn't do anything.

The room is a 12ftx10ft grey room with a double bed and that's about it. They've put a fan in the room, I'm guessing to compensate for the lack of Aircon but I can't wait to sleep with that on tonight!

Floor is dirty, bathroom is dirty, literally the most basic of basic!

If you have to book a room, plead with your work to book elsewhere or just stay somewhere else, anywhere, a campsite, it will be better equipped and cleaner

Dear ChrisW5188, First of all, let me apologies for failing in meeting your expectations on this occasion. The hotel does not have air conditioning in any room and we do not advertise as having any. To make your stay as comfortable as possible in this unprecedent temperature, we have provided a fan in every room. I am sorry to see that the cleanliness of the room was not the standard we expect. We normally pride ourselves to maintain the highest cleaning standards possible. We are as well in the process to refresh our bathroom as some of them may look a bit dated. Be reassure that even in those rooms the hygiene standards remains our priority. Our room provides all basic needs you may have with in room safe, iron with ironing table and hairdryer. Bottomless tea and coffee is available from our lobby area as well as free breakfast for all of our guest. I hope to see you back in a cooler period as I am convince we can met your expectations. We stayed 4 nights and used the hotel as our base to get to the British GP. Paid £300 for the stay so it was great value for money. Travel wise and links to the M1 the location is fab, but the hotel is in a really rough area. We arrived to a man p*sing outside the main door - that’s the best way to sum up the location! We also saw fights on 2 nights and it’s really just pretty grim, not a nice place to walk around at all.

Our room was small for a family room and it was unbearably hot, even with a fan. We assumed housekeeping would visit our room at some point to freshen it up, but when I asked was told we had to request housekeeping to come in the night before. That should be explained at check in. We had to empty our room of rubbish - travelling with a toddler, we had dirty nappies.

Great base to travel to Silverstone and once inside the hotel it’s fine. Would I stay again? Probably. Provide more information at check in and speed the process up - it seemed to take far too long.

If you’re staying: the outside is grim, but it’s a decent place to base yourself.

I had to book last minute due to a delayed flight. Check in wasn't great - no computers working, so it was just one guy shuffling through papers trying to find my booking. Once in the room, the noise was so loud (I really couldn't tell what is was, sounded like loud pipes mixed with drilling) there was no way I'd sleep! I tried to shut the window but all the handles were just hanging off. Rang reception and had to go back down, to then wait another 10 minutes while the member of staff rifled through more papers. In the end, he plucked a key card and handed it to the security guard, telling him to take me there, and to bang on the room door a few times in case someone was in there (bare in mind it was 12:45am!!) They seemed to have no record of who was occupying which room.
Anyway, switched to a slightly quieter room, which looked clean enough (this time the regular window was closed the but the secondary glazing had been completely pulled off!)
If it cost £50, then hey, you can't complain but for £100 a night you'd think they'd start a 'fix the windows, lifts, computers' fund at the very least...
