Stayed on a Friday and Saturday night in February pating about £110 b+b all in. Great value for money with a good breakfast.
Positives. Free car park, very central, our room 141, was a good size,( in the 'new' section on the 4th floor) breakfast.

Negatives, bathroom was very cold (heated towel rail was not sufficient to heat the whole room) towels were very old and thin. Breakfast on Saturday morning was buffet which means luke warm food, it was not busy so why they could not cook to order I don't know.

The negatives are only minor gripes and overall we had a great stay and would stay again but would stay again

We were slightly disappointed with our room, as it was very basic, and rather small, however, very clean, albeit very sparce (as required by covid 19 regulations).

When hubby went to top up his hot bath water with cold water, he was horrified to see a brown liquid coming out of the cold tap! We notified reception immediately, and they tried to find us an alternative room, however, they were at almost full capacity due the Formula 1 team and camera crew staying there, and the rooms that were available had not been cleaned. Lewis on reception apologised profusely and said we would get a couple of free drinks.

On entering the restaurant, we found it to be surreal, as obviously the tables were the required 2m apart, but there was nothing on the table apart from a tablecloth, again, in line with government guidelines.

The food was absolutely fantastic, as was the cooked breakfast.

Personally, we would not go to any other hotel until all restrictions are lifted, as we found our stay to be rather odd to say the least.

We could not praise the staff enough; the sous chef, who was working alone in the kitchen, was excellent, as was the waiter, Lewis on reception, and the apology received from Ben, the General Manager, when we saw him this morning. He assured us they would look into the matter of the brown water, and felt it was due to the old plumbing.

Thank you to all staff at Whately Hall for providing an excellent service, in extremely challenging conditions.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the ground or 1st floor, as we had to climb 42 stairs to our room!

Arrived Xmas eve for our 2 night stay here. I booked an executive room and we were in the broughton suite. Very spacious room we liked the fact we had a separate area to sleep in and sit and relax in.
The tv cupboard in the living area opposite the sofa was empty, the tv was in the bedroom, so when we had the tv on we had to sit on the bed…… why not just put 2 tv’s in there it Ida suite after all.
The bathroom was large but the hot water from the tap was always Luke warm so had to boil the kettle for a wash.
The cleanliness of the room was pretty diar I found toe nail clippings on the bedroom floor and their was gold glitter everywhere in the room.
We went down to the bar for a drink and I asked if the bar would be open Xmas day evening, and was told yes it would shut at 11pm, when we arrived back that evening at 945pm we got told by reception that the bar had shut at 9pm so all we could do was sit in our room.
Overall a nice hotel and ideally situated in Banbury.

Friends bought us a stay at the hotel to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary, on arrival the gentleman on reception was very friendly and polite. We were given our room key, a double room for my wife and myself, two people, the room have one towel, the carpet had not been vacuumed, the bathroom had black hairs including pubic hair, we both have blond hair, there was rubbish in the bathroom bin from the last occupants, I have my doubts that the bed had the sheets changed.
After showering (sharing a single towel) we went to reception to advise, again he was polite and said he would look himself and get it resolved, we went to the bar for a drink, it took an age for someone to come, I went to seek a member of staff to ask if the bar was open, I bumped into a chap with hoover in hand who advised he was on route to clean my room, and that someone would be at the bar soon, I returned to the bar a lady arrived at the bar, then left saying I will get someone to serve you. My wife wanted Sauvignon wine, there was none? She selected an alternate drink, which was given FOC.
Included in our stay was an evening meal, we attended the restaurant, ordered a starter to share with the intention that we would also share a desert, starter came all seemed fine, we ordered ribeye steak, 10 minutes later we were advised sorry all the ribeye is gone, I sirloin ok, we advised yes, another 30 minutes passed, we were approached to enquire if we would like to order a desert, we advised not until after our main course, which is yet to arrive? The person apologised 10 more minutes our meals arrived, my steak was cold I only ate half of it, my wife’s was so tuff she also could only manage half of it. The windowsills and carpet were filthy in the dining hall.
We were given a drink voucher each, we returned to the bar and had a drink, another guest asked my wife how her steak was, due to all the carry on this caused my wife to rush to the toilet in tears, after wiping her tears, and using the toilet she discovered that both soap dispensers in the ladies had no soap, we are still on the end of a pandemic, this is inexcusable.
It’s clear that the hotel is very badly run, there appears to be a lack of staff, many people seen trying to juggle many tasks, there doesn’t appear to be any checks in place to ensure simply tasks like cleaning a room and enough towels in place for the number of guests staying in room.
We of course will not allow our friends who purchased this gift for us know what a overwhelming disappointment this has been, which means we are forced to lie to them.
Two staff that stood out were Emma and Maddy, they both genuinely care about customers, and it was clear to see they were distressed to see us so upset. But rest assured you will loose good staff if they are not treated right, and as previously mentioned, they were both trying to carry out numerous tasks and it was clear to see they were under pressure.

I read the reviews before visiting and they were accurate. The exterior of the hotel is impressive but unfortunately that is where it ends. All areas of the hotel are extremely dated and tired and in need of serious renovations. We had booked a classic room which was dirty, had hairs in the bath and ripped curtains. We paid £288 B&B and I can honestly say I have never stayed in such a dirty hotel. We complained and we were moved to an executive room. This was honestly not much better in terms of cleanliness or tiredness , just a bigger room. The towels were threadbare and there wasn't enough milk for 2 cups of coffee for even one morning. Staff do not enter your room during your stay which I'm assuming is down to government guidelines which means no stocking up on refreshments, toilet rolls or cleaning of cups etc. The staff are friendly and helpful but must be worn down by the number of complaints they receive as I overheard several guests complaining during our stay. The breakfast was good but again not the best I've had in a hotel. The hotel is currently a 3* and in it's current state doesn't deserve that. I was advised renovations will be taking place this autumn so if you are thinking of booking the hotel I would wait until they are finished.

On a positive note we visited a Thai restaurant, Thai Orchid, which is opposite the hotel and the food and service was outstanding. There were 4 of us and we ordered lots of dishes to share and we were not disappointed withh any of them. They had a desert trolley with the most amazing home made deserts with extremely generous portions. Highly recommend a visit.

We had an enjoyable 2 night stay at the Hotel. Firstly, I think even the staff are aware the hotel needs renovating. I hope Accor do invest because this is a lovely hotel with character. The other points to mention are the changes due to Covid. There were hand sanitisers and carpets were being cleaned while we were there. We wore masks in the reception area and corridors. There isn't a maid service and this is common with most hotels presently.

Back to our stay, check in and check out were both effficient and the receptionist was very fiendly. Our room was on the second floor and bear in mind there is no lift. There were a total of 32 stairs to climb. The room was spacious and the beds were comfortable. The bathroom was very clean albeit looking a bit dated.

Breakfast was served on an order basis. No buffet which is perfectly understandible. The person who served us, George, from memory was very friendly and did a first class job. The breakfast rrom has a wonderful view of the garden.

The Hotel is about a mile walk from the railway station and it is very close to the wonderfully serene People's Park. There is an Odeon Cinema very nearby. The shopping precinct and restaurants are also close by.

Dear Colin, We very much appreciate your comments regarding your stay at the Mercure Banbury Whately Hall Hotel. It is always a pleasure to receive positive feedback. I will share your comments with our team, in particular George. I am sure that this feedback will serve as an encouragement to all of our staff as we strive to continuously improve the quality of our services. We had started to under go a refurbishment of the bedrooms in February however the current pandemic has put this on hold temporarily but we hope to continue this in due course. Where to start… myself and my mother visited this hotel for a one night Wowcher deal stay this week and to say we were disappointed would be the worlds greatest understatement. The one positive was that due to Covid restrictions and lockdown we had to move this stay a few times and the hotel were more than accommodating via email!
However it all went downhill from here….
On arrival we were told that we had requested an upgrade to an executive room and we needed pay £20 at check in for this- I had not requested an upgrade as I remembered, so we declined this and were allocated a classic twin room instead (Room 76).
2 hours after checking in, I found an email where Lewis stated he wanted to give us a complimentary upgrade to an executive room. I showed this email to reception (again, only 2 hours after checking in) and we were told that unfortunately there were now no executive rooms left for the night and a simple apology was offered, with the receptionist stating that the lady who checked us in must’ve read our booking incorrectly!!!

Now onto the very dated bedroom and when I say the room was dated… I mean it’s falling apart!
There was paint and lining paper peeling off the walls in numerous places, the toilet seat was broken and dirty, the bath seal was grubby and coming away and we found a filthy, wet towel on the bedroom floor as we walked in… kindly left by housekeeping it seems! We called reception immediately at about 4:30pm to let them know about the filthy towel, informed them we will leave it on the landing outside our room and that someone would need to come by and collect it. After returning to our room at 8:30pm after dinner.. the towel was still there!!

Our Wowcher deal included a two course dinner, which we booked for 7pm. We were advised by the receptionist that he ‘would sit in the bar to eat if he was us, because the dining room is very big and it’s not very nice when there’s no one else in there’. The bar was dingy and not what we had booked, so we decided to sit in the ‘big and not very nice’ dining room. The dining room was empty when we arrived, however 2 other tables joined in the time we dined and it was a nice, quiet atmosphere.
I must say that our waitress was lovely and the food was adequate. However, please tell me why everything is served with a side of new potatoes?? I ordered the burger and even this came with new potatoes? Very strange.

Breakfast was a buffet, help yourself style and again, was adequate. The waiter and waitress were lovely.

All in all, I would never recommend this hotel to anybody, we were so close to leaving and not staying the night.

Please avoid at all costs.

We booked having stayed at other Mercure hotels. Covid may be providing an excuse for very poor standards in the hotel. The staff must dread the approach of every visitor as they are so overworked. The restaurant was, in the words of another guest, 'appalling'. There was no-one to welcome diners, the menu was the same as the bar menu with a poor selection and no fish. Food took a long time to arrive and was of a poor quality. The 2 members of staff were responsible for the bar, the garden where guests were drinking and having food, and the dining room. We would not eat there again. Ben the manager in replies to other reviews just writes the same phrases but nothing seems to improve. Poor management and not an experience we will repeat. I wish we had read the reviews before booking.

First the positives: good central position, lovely staff doing their best and the bathroom was clean.
Negatives: We paid for an executive room and the only feature which I would term executive was the room size. The furniture was mismatched and the sofa was so grubby we didn't touch it! We even had to ask for towels as there were only one hand towel and one bath towel for double occupancy! We asked at 3pm and had to ask again at 7pm before we got more! There must have been a herd o elephants in the room above as we were woken constantly throughout the night by loud footsteps!
Breakfast was terrible. You could have mended the soles of shoes with the bacon, as it was like leather! The hash brown had been sitting on the hot plate so long, it broke like a crisp! The waiter did offer to get a freshly fried egg, as the one I had looked like plastic, but it wasn't worth asking for it as the rest was so bad.
I even had to send the coffee back as it was lukewarm.
The evening menu was just an all day menu, such as you would find in an average pub, not what we expect in an hotel and we ended up with pizza!
I listed my complaints to a lovely member of the reception staff, who listened carefully and arranged a part refund, which was very helpful.
But, a refund, though acceptable isn't ideal because the stay was still not enjoyable. We would rather have a nice time and pay for it.
By the way, breakfast just down the road at Waitrose is great!

I hope, in time, all the issues we had will be improved upon, but I wouldn't go back.

The new rooms in annex towards the back YES,THERE IS A LIFT. IN THE OLD HOTEL AT THE FRONT NO, THERE IS NO LIFT AND DIFFICULT STAIRS. So book a room in the annex just where the car park is so ver easyin front there is a ground floor oroom which is room 12. So you have no stairs and no need of a lift
