My wife and I stayed here for two nights and the first thing I want to say is that the staff here are so friendly and welcoming, nothings too much trouble, always smiling and not at all robotic.

What's even more credit to them is the fact they are all of these things in what can only be described as a bit of a delapidated old building which needs some refurbishment and quickly before they lose its greatest asset, its staff, to a much nicer hotel group.

Come on Greene King, pull your finger out and put some money into it.

Fellow reviewers and readers, when you whinge about this and that on here, it really demoralises the staff, especially when they are trying their darnedest. I'm sure they know they aren't in the nicest hotel in Banbury but you get what you pay for and I'd rather have a friendly team of staff here in those circumstances.

The place is clean but falling apart. Little glitches with hot water and things were soon reported and sorted.

Personal preference, a bit harder bed would have been nice.. But that's not a complaint, that's just what I like.

Food is good quality, again, don't expect cordon bleu when you're paying £50-60 a night and the brekkie is free.
It's tasty, not overdone and served quickly.

Well done Cromwell, we'd stay here again, but maybe a bit lower down so I didn't have to duck or turn sideways to get down the corridor lol

Thanks

Hi Phillyerboots, Thank you for taking the time to leave such a wonderful review. We absolutely pride ourselves on our customer service, and the fact we aren't robots. We are a small team who enjoy what we do and I'm so pleased that it is communicated to all our guests. We are aware that the building requires a lot of TLC and whilst we do everything in our control some of the bigger jobs just aren't manageable by us. We want everyone to enjoy their stay with us and are absolutely more than willing to assist if expectations aren't met or if there are any issues. We never want people to leave unhappy without addressing it with us first. The next time you're in Banbury and need a place to stay you know where we are. Just request a room on the first floor as the ceilings are a little more generous! Thank you again, Katie, Harriet & The Cromwell Team

Stayed for night. The room location was opposite of tent where visitors were smoking ever it wasn't place for smoking. Very uncomfortable staying.
We had dinner there - the food was delicious!
It wasn't full of visitors, we could have a room in the main building...

Booked the Cromwell through booking.com for partners birthday/Valentine’s Day. The hotel is situated in a perfect location to explore banbury. We had a twin room the beds were so comfortable room very clean as was the bathroom. The staff are fantastic nothing was too much trouble. They arranged for a bottle of prosecco a helium balloon and valentine petals on the beds as a little surprise for my partner at no extra charge. The breakfast was spot on and the eggs benedict was absolutely delicious. Yes it’s an old building with creaky floor boards etc but this just adds to the character of the place. Will definitely return! A big Thankyou to all the staff team for making our stay so lovely!!!

Stayed at this hotel for two nights on 31st January and 1st February in room 11 on the first floor at the front of the hotel.
On arrival I was shocked entering by the rear of the hotel, the pathway was narrow and uneven.
We entered through a passage way via the pub toilets which I needed to use, don’t these where appalling standard. Then finding the reception area to be uninviting dark and dirty. Although I must say the receptionist was warm and friendly along with most of the other staff.
The room was also uninviting, small and claustrophobic very tired furniture. The bathroom had had an limited upgrade but unfortunately we found the toilet hadn’t been cleaned under and around the toilet seat left dirty by previous occupants. Neither was there a toilet brush to rectify the problem.
We also found the dining room very tired like the hotel which is requiring an urgent refurbishment to attract further customers. The chairs and tables are very worn. Breakfast was unappetising, the bacon on Sunday morning was certainly off, when trying to order slight variation from there menu that appeared difficult as the breakfasts were presented as per the menu not what was ordered.
We also ate in the restaurant on the Friday evening, I wouldn’t bother the food again was tasteless and of a low standard and quality, we were given a discount of 20% due to the problems with the food.
Overall I can not recommend this hotel to anyone, don’t waste your money. Such a grand looking building, so dissatisfied and disappointed.

Hi Lyn B, As I had posted in the previous review. We are aware that the building requires a lot of TLC and whilst we do everything in our control some of the bigger jobs just aren't manageable by us. Our ladies toilets have recently been fully re-painted and we are awaiting a fixture of a leak in the gents before we start re-decorating them. We want everyone to enjoy their stay with us and are absolutely more than willing to assist if expectations aren't met or if there are any issues. We never want people to leave unhappy without addressing it with us first. Having spoke to all the members of the management team, other than a hot room, which we went and got you a fan for, we were not made aware of any other dissatisfaction. I can take your comments regarding your food quality back to our food supplier. I am pleased however, to hear that you found the team warm and friendly. They work incredibly hard to maintain expectations despite the tiredness and age of the hotel. Kind regards, Katie, Harriet & The Cromwell Team

A lovely night's stay at the Cromwell Lodge. Easy to park to the rear of the Lodge. Reception staff welcoming and very helpful. Our room was located on the first floor, lovely king size bed with window seating area, adjustable radiator, coffee and tea making facilities, TV, bathroom with tub and shower. Easy walking distance to the town centre. Convenience shop across the road next to a lovely Thai Restaurant. Italian restaurant and public house within a minute's walk from the Cromwell. Parking is also available at the front of the Lodge and main road runs outside but didn't hear any traffic noise. Currently there are no restaurant facilities which was a shame. However a full cooked Breakfast is available to purchase if not included in room rate. There is a cosy public lounge and bar. Overall a lovely night stay with welcoming friendly staff.

I rarely leave reviews but this experience was pretty poor. We booked brunch for our family online, when we turned up the girl looked baffled and didn’t have a table ready so we stood for 10 mins waiting for someone to ‘clean’ it. After sitting down at the soaking wet table, I realised there was food and wrappers all over the benches and floor. Not good standards in the middle of a pandemic. 30 minutes later we were finally given a menu and offered drinks. We were told Santa would be ready in a moment which we hadn’t booked and definitely wasn’t willing to pay for after seeing the ‘grotto’. Cue 3 confused little children. We finally received our food an hour after we arrived which thankfully tasted ok. Small portions, we would have liked the offer of extra drinks too. Considering it was empty I was surprised how long everything took. After leaving I realised they had charged us for 5 drinks that were meant to be included in the breakfasts too! Overall a pretty rubbish experience and we won’t be back unfortunately. Staff were apologetic enough but didn’t really know what they were doing.

I had a wonderful stay at Cromwell Lodge. The rooms were basic, but perfectly comfortable... My room was slightly warm, but with the window open it was fine - and despite fronting onto the main road, it was remarkably quiet. I wish I had found the fan in the wardrobe before 5 minutes before check out out though!
The shower had great pressure, and was comfortable temperature (but took a while to warm up!)
The main benefit of this hotel is the location to the town, and the friendliness of the staff! Everyone was really polite and lovely. I would like to say a special thanks to Kea for trying (albeit unsuccessfully) to cater for my conditioner needs! Would absolutely stay again.
And I thoroughly recommend the pub downstairs for exceptionally tasty food! (both the main meal on Saturday, and the roast on Sunday were fantastic).

Visited the Cromwell Lodge today for a birthday meal and I can highly recommend. This was my first meal out since Covid restrictions have been lifted so I was a little apprehensive.

The restaurant is spacious and there are hand sanitising stations and a one way system in place so I soon relaxed. We were a party of 10 (3 families) so they placed 3 tables in a row, it was lovely as although we had the correct social distancing in place, it felt like we were all together.

The food is inexpensive but excellent quality, and vegetarians and vegans are well catered for. We all enjoyed our food, very much.

The lady who took our booking over the phone was really helpful as were the staff working during our visit. Thank you to Anthony our waiter (I think I’ve got that right) and the other lovely members of staff who made our visit a very pleasurable experience. We’ve all said that we’ll be back!

After booking this hotel for a special occasion, I was absolutely devastated when I saw our room. It was tiny, dingy, the furniture was falling apart, and when I say filthy, I mean FILTHY. There was what looked disturbingly like human waste sprayed up the bathroom wall and on the doorframe. The ceiling in the bathroom was coming down and some of the fixtures were broken. I can accept that some places need a fix up but I was not willing to except the lack of cleaning, especially in the middle of a pandemic! I told the young girl on reception that I wouldn't be staying in a room of that state and she said they were fully booked so couldn't offer an alternative. They wanted over £100 for the room for one night, and quite honestly I was glad to leave. There are no excuses for lack of cleanliness on that level. I think they need to really evaluate there ability to keep the establishment going efficiently.
