Green Whale Tump bed & breakfast has beautiful views over the Wye valley, an area of outstanding natural beauty. We enjoy a quiet rural location yet are only 3 miles from the market town of Ross-on-Wye and M50, 8 miles from Monmouth. Located in the historic border land between England and Wales there is beautiful countryside, castles, historic towns and the industrial archaeology of the Forest of Dean to enjoy. There are stunning walks and cycle rides straight from the door. Ali and Andy offer a warm welcome and home cooked food including evening meals with ingredients sourced locally from quality producers.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

If you decide to book this property be sure to read all of the fine print before reserving. Whilst the reservation is held with a credit card should you find it necessary to cancel even up to one month before due to sickness or other reasons, this B&B takes a proportion of the charge from the credit card as part of its terms. So do not get ill or change your mind unless you are happy to pay 20% of the room charge. I have booked several hotels over the years using the BOOKING.COM site and if I had to cancel, I have never received any charges. A lesson now for me is to ensure I always scroll down to the very fine print and not simply read the headline booking words alone on this site. Whilst I can understand a fee for a late cancellation such as one or two days before arrival date, I think it is sad this location seems to have unreasonable terms. There are plenty of other hotel venues in this area that do not operate under the same practice so you might be wise to take this fact into account!

Response from andy w, Owner at Green Whale Tump B & B
Responded 26 Sept 2014
Thank you very much for your comments. Cancellations are a sensitive issue for all Hotels and particularly for small B and B’s. A cancelled room can represent a loss of 30% of the B and B’s income. Rooms can be booked out for weeks or months in advance and so are not available to other potential guests and are frequently not re-booked. We fully understand that guests need to cancel rooms and try to be as accommodating as possible and only charge a small fee, in this case £16, to cover our costs for when rooms are cancelled more than 7 days before the reservation. We try and make the cancellation policy as clear as possible.

We stayed at Green Whale Tump at the beginning of June in order to explore the Wye valley. The room was comfortable, sparsely and sympathetically furnished and very clean. The en suite shower room was perfectly adequate and there was the addition of a large, comfortable lounge with TV, shelves of books, DVDs and many maps of the surrounding area and beyond. The room did not have a view of the valley (which we knew on booking) but had floor to ceiling windows and was so quiet that the only thing we heard at night was the gentle hooting of an owl in the trees. Breakfast was local ingredients and very tasty and nothing was too much trouble for the hosts, who were always on hand to offer advice and pots of tea when needed.

We had 2 nights here and were very impressed. A really warm welcome from Andy and nothing seemed too much trouble. The rooms were very clean and well appointed ... I missed having a tv but I can appreciate that the noise may be unappreciated by other guests. A nicely cooked breakfast and lots of local advice left us feeling we would certainly return for another stay. It was a little tricky to find but the view from the lounge and garden soon had you forgetting any small inconvenience endured en route. Well recommended.

We stayed here to extend a family visit. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, nothing was too much trouble and the facilities offered were extremely good value for money. Breakfast was superb and the views across the valley are breathtaking. We stayed in their Loft room and it has everything you could possibly need for a home from home experience. There is something extremely relaxing about waking up to the bird song and a beautiful sun rise. We couldn't recommend the Green Whale Tump enough and we will be returning again. Thank you for a lovely break.

Lovely B & B with gorgeous views. Rooms were spacious, clean and very nicely done out. The lovely couple who run it went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. Home cooked breakfast was wonderful and we took our 2 dogs who were also made welcome. Definitely go back. Ali and Mike Garvey

Just returned from a fabulous stay at Green Whale Tump. We had the Goodrich room which had lovely views and floor to ceiling french doors. The shower was excellent and the bed extremely comfortable. Hosts were so welcoming and the breakfast was very good. Only downside was that we only stayed for one night. Great base to explore in and around Ross on Wye!

This was our second venue on a 3-night weekend trip and a much better place than the hotel we'd stayed in the night before-phew! The Green Whale was spotlessly clean, with our room in the loft of a purpose built building away from the main house. The place is owned and run by a wonderful couple called Andy and Ally, who were so welcoming, kind and helpful. So quiet and no light pollution, it is the perfect hideaway if you want to escape the rat race, with spectacular views from our lovely, comfortable room. Superb, home-cooked breakfast. Lovely sitting room for residents.

We where shown to a very nice room. Very comforatable bed. Lovely laid out building. Spotlessly clean and a great view over the valley. However, a few things which stops it being 5 stars - you sort of expect a TV in the room these days. To be fair it was not specifically mentioned - but there are no TVs in the rooms. The bathroom was very cosy. The breakfast was lovely with local ingrediants. Parking is a little exciting - not recommended if you are a nervous driver .. very tight drive with a dog leg up a steep hill - not nice to get out in the dark ! Could do with some lights.
